    3. I know I'm grateful for the people out in Scurry Co., TX for posting pictures of the Campsprings Cemetery. We weren't sure my husband's g gm was buried, and by sorting through the cemeteries in Scurry County, we found it and saw the clearest photograph of her tombstone. Right next to her marker was her daughter (we didn't know where she was buried either). This was a great find for us, and we didn't have do anything more than log on to the county site and do a little searching. I'm so very grateful those those volunteers who went to the area cemeteries and photographed the tombstones. I do think if we have pictures of markers of our loved ones already that supplying them to the website might be advantageous to others. Nancy K(Crook)Stewart

    3. The Tishomingo County WPA records [the ones we have] does not include Cemetery inscriptions. Also, there are no family stories about anyone doing any tombstone transcriptions. However, we will keep looking for more WPA records. I agree with you, tombstone pictures are proof the person lived and died. But, what I did not add to my email because someone had mqde the comment before; Pictures does not allow anyone to rum their fingers over the tombstone trying to figure out a name, when the tombstone has turned black. Neither does photos allow anyone to hold a white piece of paper against the tombstone and run a lead pencil on it, trying to find the indentations of the letters. My vote will go for tombstone photos, with the transcribed data under the picture. So we will get the best of both worlds. 3. Amen!! Pictures are the best way to preserve our history. Tombstones are proof that a person lived and died. Typed information is nice but as you said people do make mistakes. I have a question to ask and am not sure anyone can answer this one but will try. I am wondering since the WPA used to go out and type up names of people in cemeteries at one time why someone has not found the lists? Seems to me this might help for many of the tombstones that are missing because they have been either vandalized or ruined over time by Nature. Any thoughts on this? I too want to give my thanks to all the hard working volunteers who give their time in typing, copying information, driving to pick up papers when the court was going to throw them out, and for any other thing they do to make researching easier for those of us who do not live in the area. Thank you all. 1. RE: [MSTISHOM-L] photo site
    2. George Pearson
    3. Thanks for your reply. Information like you and others have provided is what we are looking for. One of the best ideas {i believe] to come across my desk is: Keep the website "in house", for photos limited to those tombstones in "new" Tishomingo County and "Old" Tishomingo County during the start up phase. Then add photos from Alcorn and Prentiss counties because they were part of old Tishomingo County. Include in the planning: Tombstone photos of ancestors, who died along the way, coming to Tishomingo County, MS. This should include Lauderdale, Colbert and Franklin Counties in Al, Itawamba County in MS and McNairy, Harden and Wayne counties in TN. One good thing about the internet is; it allows people from all over the world to work as a "team" to accomplish projects like the one described above. The moderator of the website can live anywhere in the world and still operate the site on a "as needed" basis. 1. Re: [MSTISHOM-L] tombstone photo website.
    2. Tombstones versus transcriptions? I think both are valuable and often necessary. I have lots of photos of my ancestors' stones, and they provide lots of good information and an unmatchable sense of place. Sadly, however, the stone is not always easy to read, especially in a photo and especially if the stone is old and weathered. Inscriptions which may be clear to a person actually on the site, able to touch the stone, trace the letters "by feel," and see at close range---such inscriptions may not always be clear in a photo. The work of many inscription readers in the past has preserved much long lost physical data in cemeteries. A website that includes both forms of information together would be invaluable. 3. Thanks for your comments. Yes, I agree with you, it is good to see what the tombstone looks like. I would like to add to your comments, seeing my mother and fathers name in print does not mean as much to me as seeing a photo of the actual tombstone. 3. I have posted to ANCIENTFACES.COM and find easy and fun. They have lots of different catagories to post in. I have not tried the DEADFRED.COM site. The uploading at AF is really fast (cable modem). I would love to see more headstone photo's. I don't get back to MS often and there are lots of grave sites I have not seen. 2. George, we could probably each one add our photos to the Dead Fred's site, so that would take that burden off of someone else (you).

    3. thanks for saying it better than I can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Yes, I have been down the same road, you have. I have corrected errors, filled in gaps by going to the graveyard and reading the message on the tombstone. I agree, there is a need to provide both ways. There is no better person to read the message on a tombstone than a member of the family. Come by the Archives anytime, you pass this way. Why not plan your next vacation in Tishomingo County, MS. Need help, planning your next vacation, we have information [brochures and other info] about Tishomingo county that we would love to pass on. If you like a peaceful [mostly] rural setting, Tishomingo County is the place for your next vacation. 1. tombstone photo website.

    3. I have been asked several times, Why have a tombstone photo web site with all the info posted on the web about cemeteries. I am not try to take anything away from surveying a cemetery because I have "been there and done that". I know what it is to wade thru knee deep grass, briars and bushes looking for another tombstone and more. I [with others] had to take the time to find someone to lead us to an abandoned cemetery, only to find out we had been within 20 to 50 feet from it before durning a 1/2 day trip looking for it. My personal opinion is; Looking at photo of one of my ancesters names on a tombstone makes it much more personal than looking at the same name on a printed list. I guess it proves the old saying "one picture is worth a thousand works" I agree there are those persons, who want nothing more than a printed list. That is their right and which must be respected. But I am in the group that wants a little more. Last, but not least: Takeing tombstone photos with modern digital cameras "lets you see what you are going to get before you get it". So you can be sure, you have the best photo of the tombstone as possible. Sure beats one or more persons trying to figure out what is written on the tombstone, while standing in the hot sun, waist deep in bushes and briars and not knowing if you are standing inches from a rattlesnake or not. In hindsight, I guess the person was right, when I was told, you are crazy to go out there in those bushes and briars just to record names on a tombstone."
