All of you have posted many good ideas, which will be used to make the decision, whether to create the website "in house" or use a website like Dead Fred. However, if anyone is thinking about posting their opinion/ideas about the Tombstone photo website, please do. 3. Jim: Your suggestion is a good one and it will be added to the list of options. However, most of the cemeterys are on land provieded by local churches, and many do not keep any cemetery records. If we can create the tombstone photo website "inhouse", it will be easy to add all the suggested options provided we have enought memeory space. The records of one of the local funeral homes should be online and/or "ready for lookup requests' by the end of this year. I have "been there and done" by being "up to my ears" by wearing [too] many hats/titles at one time. The Civil war "Battle of Iuka" is one part of the great Heritage of the town of Iuka and Tishomingo County, MS. So, a reunion for all descendents of any Rebel or Yankee soldier assigned to any miltary unit involved in the battle on Sept. 19, 1862 will be added to the Iuka Heritage Festival this year. This is your invitation to join the other decendants on Sept 11, 2004, for a reception in your honor at the old Court House in Iuka. The reception will start at 4 pm with a candle light service will start at 6 pm. The candle light service could be delayed untill "dark of night" arrives. Advance registeration plans will be announced soon. 3. Tim: The counties in MS, where the WPA recorded the information on the tombstones does seem to have a shorter list of unmarked graves than Tishomingo does. Tishomingo County tombstone transcribers did have a Biggs and Barnes Cemetery book to use. So, it would have helped to compare three different transcriptions instead of two. Then most of all, help find the abandoned grave yards. 3. After reading this message, I went to Scurry County, Texas and saw the project that is already in order, The Tombstone Project sponsored by Rootsweb - our county is already set up and has a contact - let's look at this and see - maybe all is already done as far as the tombstone pix is concerned: look at our county site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/mississippi/tishomin.html and then, this site gives the counties in Mississippi who already have ones - I suggest that we use this Rootsweb sponsored deal - we would not be reinventing the wheel in this way. 3. Tim, first of all, I appreciate your thanks on maintaining our county records as I kept boxes and boxes of books, papers, etc. in my basement for years. In fact, Cindy Nelson and I kept all of them until the Archives became reality. Next, about the WPA, I have some years ago ordered and printed the microfilm roll of Tishomingo County WPA documentation. And, now, I have donated the microfilm roll to our Archives so that all can share. The Archives was very fortunate in receiving a personal donation which made the purchase of a microfilm reader/printer a reality at the Archives. However, the cemetery projects were not documented nor mentioned in our county WPA files. I realize that some counties were documented and that is wonderful. I, personally, have an ancestor who was buried way out in a field with a sandstone for a headstone. When I questioned the landowner about any sort of activity there, he said that he remembered the WPA coming out there and cleaning it up. Alas, tho, no record of such! Thanks for your interest in our county - and I hope that the pix of both ancestors and headstones becomes a reality! 3. I like this idea as well. And, we could post it on the list here when we have added a photo. What do y'all think? This would take a huge burden off of George and still get the wanted results, right? 3. I am thinking more along the lines of pix of folks rather than cemetery headstones. As you say, a pix of the headstone is nice to have but our Tishomingo County Cemeteries as well as the Alcorn county ones have already been surveyed and published. There is a site where vounteers sign up to take pix of area headstones for folks. I have used this site as well as taken pix for others. Just sharing my thoughts of the pix, Brenda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Janice Switcher" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, July 13, 2004 10:49 PM Subject: Re: [MSTISHOM-L] Holloway School in Tishomingo Co. > What is the reason for taking pictures of all the stones??
