jdan: My mom's maiden name is Daniel. How I would love ever so much to make a connection with your Daniel family. My earliest known Daniel ancestor was Obediah Daniel who was born ca 1810, possibly in TN. He married Sarah Lambert, and the only child I know of that was born to them was John Bailey Daniel (b. 8-30-1831 in TN and died 1908 in Acton, TN or Farmington, MS). Over time, I have found John Bailey in Center Star, AL, in Allsboro, Colbert Co., AL, and Tishomingo Co., MS, in addition to having been in either Acton, TN or Farmington, MS. I am highly suspicious that some of the family went from Colbert Co., AL over into Wayne Co., TN, since it was a matter of only a few miles. The family did marry into the families of Dodd, Thorne, et al. My earliest info on the family comes from my great aunt, who was the great granddaughter of the said Obediah. I just have not found him anywhere, though, beyond what I have mentioned. Nor, have I been able to scrounge up even any stragglers who could be considered as his siblings. John Bailey Daniel, son of Obediah, did serve in the Civil War and must have been fighting around Shiloh when his twin daughters (Mary and Martha ((Matt)) were born. The story was passed to me from my great aunt that when the twins were about a year old, their father had never seen them, so their mother took them over to the battle area where he was fighting so that he could see them. Since that's not so far out of the way from Acton, TN area, I suspect that may be where they lived at that time. About John Bailey Daniel's service in the Civil War, I talked to the husband of a local judge here in Memphis a couple of years ago. He is very big into Civil War research and was, at that time, working on the history of a certain TN regiment (which I cannot recall from memory). About a week before that discussion with him, I had learned that John Bailey (who was my gg grandfather) served in the very same outfit that this fellow was working on. He did look up my John's name in his information and did find it. For whatever use it might have been to him, I sent him a photo of John Bailey Daniel. About a year ago, he came by my office and brought me a copy of a book he had put together on this outfit he had researched. I wasn't actually aware that he was researching for the purpose of doing a book on that Civil War unit, but that's what he did, and he used the photo of John that I had given him and put it into the book. His information showed that John had come from VA to TN (and I do find John Bailey's marriage in TN). His research also showed that John attended a military school near Jackson, TN. I sure would like to find my Obediah --- if you or anyone else out there can possibly help me. Thanks for reading through this long saga --- didn't mean for it to turn into such. Lyllye: My Martin family moved from Tishomingo County MS to Van Buren County AR between 1850 and 1860. I couldn't find out why. Later on, they moved (right in the middle of the war) to Illinois. As it stands right now I do not even know some of the surnames that might have traveled with this family to Arkansas. And I know that families often traveled together. Something brought James to Arkansas and possibly he was following one of his older children here. I thought that the family came to Arkansas through Pope county because my gr grandfather Z.T. Pettit (that married Mary Ann Ritter) and his first wife Sarah were on the census there in 1880 and the marriage record for Z.T. and Mary Ann was issued out of Pope County. But James is on the Van Buren County census in 1860 & 1870. Shortly after ZT & Mary were married there was a land patent issued to a John Ritter (possibly Mary Ann's older brother and one of James' older children) for land in Pope County but I do not find the Ritter's on any of the census for Pope County. I'd like to know if John were married and possibly who he might have married. I have sent for forms to try to order some of the land patents from the Bureau of Land Managment but haven't recieved them yet. By 1900 the my gr grandfather was on a census in Van Buren with Mary Ann. The 1890 census I believe is the one that is lost because of fire & flood damage & that is really hurting the research on this family. Researching Alonzo WARD b. 1835-45 and wife isabella Province/ Provines. He MAY be son of Charles & Catherine Ward and MAY have lived in Lownes Co prior to coming to Tishomingo. He's in Tishoomingo by 1870 and shows him with wife Margaret. Then in 1880 it shows him with wife Isabella. I can't trace him after that, although family lore has the family in Izard Co., Ark, around Pocahontas. Would love to find out his parents and when/where they died.
What Wilson family are you interested in. My line is from John Wilson. He came from Montgomery Co, TN before 1840, and probably died in Tishomingo Co, MS about 1864. Is this your line.
