Melissa, I am surprised that such a thing happend in the 30's within the town limits. Certainly there were family still living in the area. Could this be one of those WPA things or Rural Electric projects? Where was the cemetery located? Surely someone remembers or remembered. PS, Alben Hopkins lives here on the coast, I think the middle name mentioned as Trave was supposedly Travis. Will try to find out. Ron Hughes
It wasn't a project. Sara Lois Mohundro remembers the cemetery and said that the man just hooked a slide up to a mule and carted the stones away. She remembers so clearly because she was going to school at the old school before it burned. The cemetery was just down the a road from there. She said there were large stones it the cemetery, some with spires and alot of old Indian graves. I think we narrowed the time down to 1928-1931. She said the school burned when she was in the 8th grade and it had to be before then, she turned 86 on Friday. The cemetery was located North of Commerce St. on Fredrick Road next door to where Doss Martindale lived. The old Bell home is next door to Doss's. Do you know where that is? The house that was built over the cemetery is red brick and it has a enclosed porch that was closed in with white siding, it's on the north side of the road, just around the curve. It is said that he used the stones as footings for the house. The man died in 1940 and nothing was ever done about it. Another house was built next door to that in the 1970's, and possibly is over the graves as well.
