My grandmother was a Barnett. Her great grandfather, Albert J. Barnett, moved from Tippah County, Mississippi, in the early to mid 1850's to Leon County, Texas, which is where my father was born and many Barnett descendants still reside. Albert J. Barnett's father, John, appears to have homesteaded in Tippah County having received land patents for three tracts (sections 1 and 12 in Township 6S, Range 1E, and section 36 in Township 5S, Range 1E) in 1842-1843. He is listed in the Tippah County 1840 and 1850 census. John was born in 1797 in South Carolina and married to Martha who was born in 1798 in Tennessee. The older children were born in Alabama and the family appears to have moved to Tippah County between 1837 and 1840 from Alabama. I have the names of five children (Albert J., Williams S., Sarah A., James J. and Frances A.) from the 1850 census and the 1840 census suggests that there existed 5-6 more with another possible child listed in a separate household in the 1840 census. Does anyone have further information on John's or Martha's family (father, mother, siblings, descendants) or other information about the Barnett's in Tippah County, Alabama or South Carolina? I am also interested in information on Albert J. Barnett's wife, Rebecca A. Oden, whom I have assumed Albert J. met and married in Mississippi. Her birthplace is listed as Mississippi in the 1860 Leon County, Texas census. I have considerable information on the Texas branch of the Barnett's that I would be happy to share if anyone is interested. At this point the information that I have is not entered into standard software such as familytreemaker or such but I have plans to do so. I will happily share what I have in the form that I have it whenever it is requested and will be delighted to stay in contact as I add to what I have.
