It would make sense. The 1870 Census for Tippah County Listed: Richard Mays 55M Farmer NC S.M.A. 43F Keeps Hse. Tn. W. R. 17M At school MS T. M. 12 M MS P. A. 11M MS H. E. 8 F MS C. N. 5M MS W. H. 1M MS W. R. would be William Robert Mayes B. 04-01-1853 D. 04-14-1928 buried Antioch Cemetery, Tippah Co. C. N. would be Clarence Mayes B. 10-08-1865 d. 07-13-1942 Buried at Antioch Cemetery under the name Bob Mays, the name he was known by. He is listed on the 1900 and 1910 census of Tippah county with his family. T. M. would be your Thomas Mathis Mays. Birth dates don't exactly match, but census are not always correct either depending on when the census was taken and when the birthday fell. Do you know anything about Richard or other syblings?
