    2. Lloyd, Thanks for the info! That is my Thomas Carter's son Alexander. He is in Carter Chapel Cemetery (Methodist) and I have pictures. There was a large number of Carter's in the area of McLemoresville in Carroll Co, TN and still are. Clella Mae Carter wrote a book on this branch in the 1970-1980's. She brought the line of Thomas Carter, son of Alexander Carter b. VA, d. Chester Co, SC 1824 up to the present day. We do not know who Alexander, Sr. Carter's siblings or parents were. That's where I'm wondering if your line could come in. I'm betting that the CD has the info from the book, as I know someone has put it online. Thanks for thinking of me though!! This Alexander Carter m. Mary Ledsinger Nov 18, 1817 Chester Co.. SC. Teri

    2. Lloyd, Thanks for the info. They look promising as a colaterol line. The names Thomas, Robert and Elizabeth appear often early in these lines. Actually Thomas comes down through most of the generations. If you find any more info about where in SC let me know. My Carter's were from Chester Co SC and lived near "Fishing Creek". Bishop Francis Asbury, a Methodist Circuit rider, writes of preaching at the church they founded there in his diary in 1789. My 4th G -grandfather Thomas Carter b. Va 1766, brought his family to TN from SC about mid 1820's with one of his brothers and all of his children. Other's stayed in SC, so that's why I wonder if your line could come from one of those. His father's name was Alexander b. VA and he moved to SC by abt late 1780's. My Thomas had a son Thomas Alexander I'll keep your info and watch for them. Teri

    3. Do not know if they were Methodist or not. IN 1850 & 1860 THEY WERE IN PONTOTOC CO. In 1870 THEY WERE IN MARSHALL CO In census twice. Talor (Taylor) Carter was in Union in 1880. 3. Hey Yall, As part of the USGENWEB project Mississippi has a site dedicated to Family Group Sheets. If you would like to contribute yours, here's the link. Remember to clean your FGS before submitting omitting information on living relatives. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usfgs/mississippi/ On another note MSGENWEB has completed it's transciption of Slave Narratives from Mississippi. I was lucky enough to help with this project. Visit the site and read for hours, it's like opening a time capsule and includes information on African Americans and Plantation owners. In the header is a photo from an unknown worker in Blue Mountain, MS. One of our Tippah County residents. http://www.rootsweb.com/~msgenweb/xslaves/xslave-index.htm Enjoy! Melissa McCoy-Bell

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/iJB.2ACE/1009.2 Message Board Post: Here is a little bit of what I have on Finley. I am Ron Hughes, my e-mail address is opuslola@aol.com. I am a Rowland family researcher. Children of David Burleson Rowland, continued. IX. Effie / Avie / Eva / Eveline / Avaline Rowland, b. about 1850, married William A. (Billy) Guthrie, in 1868. Note she is listed as a daughter. Eveline Guthrie, is listed as the wife of William N. Guthrie in the obituary of 1877 for D. B. Rowland. Her brother, George W. Rowland married Macey/Macie/Mary/Marie (E.?) Guthrie. Note she is listed as; Avaline, in the 1860 Census, 10 F, MS. X. Mary J. (Isabell / Belle / Jezabel ?, please note that 19th Century “I’s and J’s are very often mis-written transcribed) Rowland, b. 8/19/1853, d. 5/9/1919 in Searcy, AR. Note she is listed as the daughter, Mary Isabell McCall, in the 1877 obituary of D. B. Rowland. She is listed as M. J. in both the 1860 and 1870 Census records. While is unlikely her name was Jezabel, due to those persons who transcribed the Census records, somehow it became listed as a “J.” on many documents. (Note, possibly, this is another example of how an “I.” is converted into a “J.” or visa versa by people who transcribe records. RLH-2000) She married 1st to, Andrew Brad (Bradford?) Holley (Holly), in 1870, he was born Sept. 11, 1844, child; Rachael (Bradford?) Holley / Holly. Mary Jezebel / Isabell (Belle) Rowland also married, Matthew (Matt) McCall, b. 1850. One child was Francis A. McCall; Note, Matt McCall must have died shortly after the death of his father in law, D. B. Rowland or Mary Isabell McCall was not listed as a widow in the obituary of her father. On Aug. 30, 1877, shortly after the death of her father, Mary Isabel married Finley F. Martindale, b. 2/13/1856, d. 12/23/1932. He is buried at New Salem Cemetery in Tippah County, MS. Finley is the son of Riley and Mary Bulah (Polly) Howell Martindale. They lived in the Oakland area. The following is an account of Mary Isabell Rowland as written by Jean Brown Wyse in the Heritage of Tippah Co., Vol. II. Mary Isabell (Belle) Rowland, b. Aug. 19, 1853MS. She was the daughter of Nancy A. Turrentine and David Burleson Rowland. She grew up on her family farm, which was located a few miles west of Walnut on the New Salem Road and the Tiplersville Cross Road. Mary Isabell and all of her family were members of the Church of Christ. Belle married Andrew Brad Holley on March 7, 1871. After making the statement “I’m either going home or to hell.”, on a stormy day, Andrew Brad (Bradford) Holley was struck and killed by lightning while riding horesback back home. Andrew Brad Holley was born Sept. 11, 1844 and died March 7, 1871. He is buried in Enon-Rowland cemetery. Belle and Brad Holley had one child Rachel Bradford Holley. Belle then married Matthew McCall, (they probably married in 1873 or 1874), their daughter was Francis Ann (Frankie) McCall, born on Sept. 9, 1874. Matthew (Matt) McCall was born about 1850 and died in 1877. He is also buried in Enon-Rowland Cemetery. Mary Isabell (Belle) (Rowland, Holley) McCall, then married Finley Martindale. Finley was born on Feb. 13, 1856. He was the son of Riley and Mary Bulah (Polly) Howell Martindale. Riley and Polly were both born in Alabama and are both buried in the Martindale Cemetery near Walnut. Finn and Belle Martindale lived near the Oakland Community and had seven children. The children were; 1. Martha 2. Marion David Martindale 3. Van 4. Thad 5. Crum Martindale 6. Maude 7. Eugene The following is paraphrased from the article. Marion David Martindale (1881-1966) married Elizabeth McBurnette. Marion David was a cowboy in Texas. By 1889 Finn and Belle Martindale moved to Essary Springs, Tennessee for the purpose of enrolling the eldest daughters Rachel Bradford and Frankie in school. (Note, Essary Springs, TN is reportedly the area in which the Billy Garrett family lived. He is on my fathers side. RLH-2001) Rachel B.(Bradford) and Francis Ann (Frankie) not only attended school together in Tennessee but both became engaged about the same time to brothers. Rachel was engaged to Willis Heywood Watkins and Frankie was engaged to George W. Watkins of Caruthersville, Missouri. But a funny thing happened on the way to the alter for Rachel and Heywood Watkins, it appears that Rachel’s younger sister, Martha Elizabeth, hijacked Heywood Watkins, and they eloped with him to Missouri. Finley and Belle Martindale moved to a farm near Stamford, Texas about 1900. After raising the rest of the children in Texas, Bell and Finn moved to another farm they owned in Leslie, Arkansas. Belle died on May 9, 1919. Finn then sold his property in Texas and divided it with the children, except for the ranch in Stamford which was kept by his youngest son Gene Martindale. Finley moved back to Tippah County Missisippi, where he married Mary Esther (Molly) Curle Rainey in Oct. 1919. She was the widow of Thomas Rainey. Rachel “Bradford” Holley, b. Oct. 25, 1871, married Cass Rose. They moved to Abilene, TX, where Cass Rose taught school. Rachel died in 1951 in Abilene, TX. Jean Brown Wyse, the writer of the above, is the daughter of Viola Mae Martindale, the daughter of Marion David Martindale and Elizabeth McBurnette. Viola Mae Martindale married Clarence Brown. Finley F. and Mary Isabell or Jezabel (Rowland) Martindale had the following children: Note this is my list. RLH-2000. 1. Abie Ellavander “Van” Martindale, who married Leslie Allen McAda in Texas. 2. Martha C. Martindale 3. Marion David Martindale, b. 6/21/1881, d. 2/21/1966, m. Elizabeth McBurnette. 4. Robert Thaddeas Martindale 5. William Crum Martindale, Dr. 6. Maude Mae Martindale 7. Eugene “Gene” Martindale Hope the above helps! Ron

    2. Talbert Dolton ROWLAND, this name I believe should be Talbert or Tolbert Dalton Rowland! I am a Rowland relative and I used to have quite a bit of information on the family. Have you looked into the Rutherford connecting Tippah families section? It is in the Tippahl@rootsweb.com section. Since I sent a lot of corrected information to his site, you should find a lot of information there. At one time, I had over 1,000 pages of information on the family, but due to computers, and their failures, I may not have the information left. But I am pretty sure on what I wrote you from memory. A lot of my research has by now been spread over the web, but I am not sure what remains. So, hello cousin! Ronald L. Hughes
