    1. [MSTIPPAH-L] New Information for Tippah and Benton
    2. Melissa McCoy-Bell
    3. Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving! I just put online a ante-bellum diary written by James Terry. Some of you may have already read the Charles Terry Diary that has been on line for quite some time. James Terry is Charles's older brother. The years of the diary are 1852-1856, it contains detailed information of neighbors of friends of the Terry family. Mr. Hugh Corrigan transcribed the diary and gave it to us to use. Thank you, Mr. Corrigan for all of your hard work. Enjoy! And have a wonderful holiday. Melissa McCoy-Bell The James Terry Diary: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mstippah/JTindex.html

    1. [MSTIPPAH-L] Routes to Tippah
    2. For what it's worth, my gt gt gp Jacob Elliott was in Randolph Co., AL, (close to present Anniston, AL-in east central AL) in 1848 and in 1850 he was in Tippah Co., MS. I have assumed that he probably traveled the route of the present US highway 78 or an old road just north of 78, I believe that one is called US 278. Paul

    3. Tom, Glad to hear that these records will be moved. Stoddard County, Mo. had a similar situation, except the records were under the courthouse in an unfinished area! Volunteers from the Historical Society, Genealogical Society and the DAR sorted and cleaned the records. Then volunteers finished the basement area, much of the money for building supplies came from a grant. Volunteers spent many hours preparing older records to be sent to the State Archives in Jefferson City to microfilmed. These records and the microfilm are now housed in the courthouse basement/Stoddard County Archives which is open 5 days a week for research. Lots of hard, dirty work but so much history has been preserved!!!! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tom Childers" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, October 31, 2000 10:27 AM Subject: [MSTIPPAH-L] Tippah Co. 1. [MSTIPPAH-L] Correction on Trails
    2. Becky Smith
    3. Andrea, in my earlier message I hadn't realized that it intersected with the Lower Creek Trading Post Road, so I referred to the whole stretch as the Charleston-Ft. Charlotte Road. Sorry for any inconvenience. Here's the correct information: I still think it's most likely that your ancestors took the Charleston-Ft. Charlotte Road which went from Charleston, SC to Augusta, GA. At that point, it intersected with the Lower Creek Trading Post Road and continued on just north of Macon, GA, then through Birmingham, AL in cental Alabama and into Mississippi in what is now Monroe County, and on to Pontotoc, and Clarksdale, MS. Peace, Becky

    2. Hi, I've neglected to stay in touch for awhile and am finding a lot of msgs. that include names for a list of some kind. Must be important and I'd like to participate. 3. Several have expressed concern about the Tippah County Records in upstairs of the court house. Yesterday, I visited with Danny Shackelford who is the Chancery Clerk. They have recently remodeled and moved to the old Peoples Bank building on the north of the square. They have a beautiful facility with fire proof rooms. They plan to use their former office in the courthouse to house the neglected records. Progress is being made. The availability of staff and approval of the Tippah County Supervisors will make the relocation possible. Tom Childers

Charlotte Road which went from Charleston, SC through Augusta & Macon, GA through cental Alabama and slightly north of central AL up to Pontotoc, MS. 1. [MSTIPPAH-L] travel routes
    2. Andrea Monk
    3. Could anyone tell me what common travel routes there were back in the 1800's for Georgia to Alabama and then on to Mississippi?? My family starts out in Georgia (county unknown) to Alabama (Tallapoosa county) then they are found in the tri-county area of Tippah-Union-Pontotoc. I thought if I could see what their travel routes were it might help in some of the guessing that I have to do. Thanks for your help. Andrea Monk [email protected]

Your thoughtfulness and hard work paid off for me! I now have contact with some of my "New" family, I would probably never had contact with had it not been for your great idea and follow through. 3. I would also like to express my thanks to Fred. I only joined this list about a week ago, so didn't see the beginning email about the roll call. But it didn't take long to figure out that he was doing something on his own and doing all of us a huge favor. I'm can't find the beginnings of my Carters but something led me to this county and this mail list. You guys are very active and very sharing of your information. I don't know who gggrandpa George Washington Carter's parents were. He first appears in Texas with his siblings living with another family. He was born 1851 in LA, but several clues have led me to Tippah and neighboring counties in MS. Fred's list has given me another resource for searching for these Carters. 3. It appears to me that anyone subscribed to the Tippah Mailing List would be interested in any help they could get for research, rather than 'bad-mouthing' a person who is TRYING to help. Fred has done an excellent job, and those of us who are interested in genealogical research appreciate it very much.
