    1. [MSTIPPAH-L] CAMP CREEK
    2. Don, there is a (very) small community located just north of New Albany (Union County) that is called Camp Creek. Union County was formed in 1870 from parts of Tippah, Pontotoc, and Lee Counties and I suspect (though I don't know) that the Camp Creek community could well have fallen within the old pre 1870 Tippah County. To locate this community on a map find New Albany, cross over the Tallahatchie River, and then look about 3-4 miles north on Hwy. 78.

    3. Is anyone researching the Beck family of old Tippah and now Benton Co. Miss.? Orrin Beck owned land next to my gg grandfather, Elijah Cox. He was a brother of Miriam Beck Forrest, mother of Lt. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. According to the Andrew Brown history of Tippah Co. the Forrests settled on Beck's land in 1831. I believe William D. Beck, Capt. of Co. D 2nd Miss. Inf. was a sibling of Miriam and Orrin. I am confused by the Orrins though. An Orrin A(lston?) Beck was a Lt. in the 2nd Miss. and there was an Pvt. Orrin A. Beck in Co. A 18th Btn. Miss. Cav. I don't believe this is the same Orrin above since he was born in 20 Feb. 1803 and would have been to old for the war. Are Orrin A. of the 2nd MS and the 18th MS Cav. the same man? The area the Coxes and Becks lived in was about two miles south of old Salem. The day after the battle at Brice's Cross Roads Forrest pursued the fleeing Federals as far as Salem and Andrew Brown says Gen. Forrest spent the night at Orrin Beck's. This area was given much attention by the Yankees who were trying to capture Forrest since the Becks were his relatives and his boyhood home was only about a mile south of Orrin's home. There is a Beck cemetery on Orrin's former property. In it is a grave marked Col. W.D. Beck. Andrew Brown lists him as a Capt. I think I have read some place that he was promoted to Lt. Col. If he was a later promoted to Col., what unit did he command? Brown says he was a Maj. Gen. of Militia before the war and Wm. Falkner was a Brig. Gen., yet Beck served as a Capt. under Col. Falkner in the 2nd Miss. Inf. FredGet more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com

According to Census Records, Mary L. Aldridge was the daughter of Elias and Elizabeth Aldridge, both born in Alabama. John J. Smith was the son of Erastus and Sarah Smith, all born in South Carolina. The 1900 Tippah Census shows a Mary Gaillard, April 1888, living with father, Charles T. Gaillard and step-mother, Lucy. Charles T. Gaillard married Mrs. Lucy Rowell 24 August 1898. 3. Hi, Jim -- I checked my database and have no Howard Levi SMITH (1883-1941) or Mary E. GAILLARD (1887-1970) -- but see below. I do list a Levi C. ALDRIDGE who married Sallie J. WALLACE Feb. 14, 1883, Tippah Co, MS. Sallie was b. May 25, 1852 and died Jan. 31, 1926, possibly in Tippah, but I don't have that info. They had daughters Ethel and Mattie. Ethel m. Washington Dudley TIGERT, Dec. 25, 1902 and I have 5 children listed for them: Washington Dudley, James, Elizabeth, William and Jamie May. Ethel's husband was my 2nd cousin twice removed. There are other connections among GAILLARD/TIGERT/WALLACE surnames. I have listed a Charles "Charlie" GAILLARD, b. ca. 1851 & d. 1926, who married (1) Sallie WALLACE, about 1879. I have 7 children listed for them, one is a daughter whose name I don't have but I show her husband as "H.L. SMITH" so this just may be the one you're looking for. The timing would be about right. Unfortunately, I don't have any children listed for them, nor do I know who his parents were. I feel sure this is your family. Other children for Charlie GAILLARD & Sallie WALLACE were: Richard Franklin; Jim; Hardy; Sarah Pearl "Sallie;" Benjamin; and Dan. Richard married "E. UNKNOWN" and they had a son Frank P. born & died on Sep. 13, 1901. No further on them. Jim, b. Mar 5, 1882; d. Feb. 16, 1937 and buried at Wier's Chapel Cem, Tippah Co, MS. He had a son named Robert who d. Jul 19, 1921, Tippah and was bur. at Wier's Chapel, too. Wife's name not known to me. Hardy GAILLARD, b. ca. 1883; d. May 26, 1928, Tippah Co, MS; m. Jennie UNKNOWN. I have no children's names for them. Sarah Pearl "Sallie" GAILLARD, b. Feb. 4, 1889; d. Feb. 9, 1917, and buried at Wier's Chapel Cem, Tippah Co, MS. Sallie married Jesse Hugh TIGRET (same family as TIGERT, above; they all spelled it differently). Jesse Hugh was a son of William Thomas "Tommie" TIGRET and Mary Ann "Annie" SHACKLEFORD. I don't hae Sallie & Jesse's marriage date or any children listed. Benjamin was b. May 17, 1876 (date on his tombstone); d. April 26, 1949, and is buried at Wier's Chapel, Cem, Tippah Co, MS. I have no wife or children listed for him. Dan married Unknown HALL, dau. of John Wash HALL & Anna Eliza UNKNOWN. I have no furhter info on this couple. A little on the wife's family, as follows: Anna Eliza UNKNOWN was b. ca. 1873 and died Feb. 12, 1935, Tippah Co, MS, age 62. She was buried in New York Cem, Tippah Co, MS. Ch. of John Wash HALL & Annie Eliza were: Alvie, Clyde, Dorie, and two daughters whose names I don't have. One of the unnamed daughters m. Dan GAILLARD; the other m. Robert "Rob" CLARK. Charlie GAILLARD remarried about 1875 to (2) (Mrs.) Lucy ROWELL and they had Earnest; Lou; Onie; Russell; Sammie; Earl Leander. That's all I have on the GAILLARD family. Hope something here helps you or someone else. Good luck in your search! You might find some more clues if you check all these surnames in the Tippah County Death Notices which are online and searchable at the excellent Tippah County web site. Peace to All, Becky Smith

    3. Hi everyone, I'm so glad everyone is still here. I would like to say welcome to all the new list subscribers. We are a quite bunch much of the time, but if you ever need help with your research everyone is willing to lend a hand. That's why Tippah has so much information to share. I'm trying to come up with enough info to create a towns and community page and I need your input. I am formatting it in columns on a main index with links to pages concerning each community. If you have information on any of the Tippah or Benton Communities that exist now or existed in the past and would like to include it on this page, send it in and I will add it to what I have. The basic things I need are; when the community was formed, how it was named or any other names it might have had, extinct or active, and the pioneer families. I would also love to have pictures; school pictures, town square pictures, gatherings, etc.! You may scan them and send them in jpeg or gif format. Any help would be much appreciated. Is everyone happy with the new query and message boards boards? If you are having problems with them please don't hesitate to tell me. Thanks, Melissa McCoy-Bell

Am researching Stroup, Moran, and Queen, all of the formerly Salem, Tippah, now Ashland, Benton County. All following sites have recently been updated if you have been there before. There may possibly be some mistakes, though most of the info has been collaborated with other researchers: My Stroup info is at: http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/fstroupe/STROUP1/index.htm My Moran info is at: http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/fstroupe/MORAN/index.htm My Queen info is at: http://www.uftree.com/UFT/WebPages/fstroupe/QUEEN/index.htm (this research was mostly done by Reiley Kidd and is a few years old) Good hunting, all.
