Hello, I am looking for info on Amos Moore and Elvira Crow. Any info will be very much appreciated. Thank you Bessie
Hello, I have just been researching my Garrett family of Tippah Co. My gg granfather on my g grandmothers side was John Garrett of Chalybeate, MS. His family background is somewhat clouded since some family members consider him a bastard child. My great aunt, Ruby Garrett wrote my mother a letter in 1977 where she mentioned that John Garrett, b. Jan. 13, 1847 SC. He came to Tippah Co. as a young orphan, on a wagon, while in MS he was assisted or raised by the Lominich (Lommineck?) family and the Spencer Gibbs family when in Mississippi. I have assumed he was reared constantly in Tippah Co. but he may have been in a nearby county for some of the time. He married first Cornelia Gibbs, daughter of Spencer, and had a few children, second he married Alpha Talulah Bobo, daughter of Dempsey Bobo, and had my Grand Mother. Jewel Bobo Garrett. The only information I have been able to find on the Lommineck/Lominich family is a marriage of Nancy Lommineck, b. 1828 SC, died 1893, buried Union Cemetery, Chalybeate/Jonesborough, to Hiram Jackson. They were married in 1853. According to the Heritage of Tippah Co., Vol. I, he moved to MS from SC about 1850, and married Nancy Lommineck who reportedly lived in the Baldwyn community at that time. They lived in the Chalybeate area. Does anyone have any information on the Lommineck/Lominich family? Does any one have access to the 1860 / 1870 / 1880 cenus for information on this family and the Gibbs and Garrett family? Many thanks for any information. Ron Hughes

John shows up a widow in the 1880 Clay MS census as John W. MURRAH. In the house is daughter Laura, brother Archy L., sister Josephine, sister Virginia, and brother Rufus. John later married Bettie’s sister (*). *Tippah Co MS, Marriages shows J.W. MURRY m. Josie THOMAS 9 December, 1896. Since John’s second wife is reported to be Bettie’s sister, perhaps she was widowed. Together they had many children. One was a daughter named Mary. Mary married a man named Tom and settled in Polk Co. AR. In Vandervoort or Mina. Rumor has it that Tom was also a MURRY. Laura Alice m. Any help and any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Phyllis

I have a copy of my great great grandmother's pension request giving his date of death as 1868 and the place as Covington, TN. I always thought that he was probably buried there. I have found a letter written by my great aunt Betty written in 1971 that he "was drafted into the war. While in one of the battles, he was wounded. A little Testament saved his life. A bullet hit the Testament, cut ever leaf in it. The Testament caused the bullet to glance... His health broke after the war. He died at an early age. He was also a singing school teacher. After his death, she stayed single for approx. 3 years. Then her father, Grandpa Crowder sold out. Moved to Rusk Co., TX. Then Grandma followed in pursuit. She started courting Hayes. She had all her stuff put on a steam boat at Memphis, TN moving to Texas. She married Hayes on the boat to TX. ... Grandpa White was buried in Miss. Grandpa Hayes was buried in Rusk Co., TX." I do not know anything about the Ripley area. Has anyone come across his name on a CSA grave? My brother found a Robert White, son of WH and MR White in the Ripley, MS Cemetery (Is there more than one?) who was born Nov. 4, 1842 and died 7/3/1844. I suspect this was a cousin. Perhaps W. H. And Robert (his father) were brothers? I found them both on the 1850 Census and both were born in SC and appear to have moved together from SC to TN to MS. My Robert S. was 15 years old at the time of the 1850 Census, Tippah Co., MS. and living with his parents and siblings. Thanks. Dawn
