A bit of a history lesson just in case you run across your relatives living in beat usually followed by a number: The beats were formed by Mississippi State Law. There are five beats in a county. In La. they are called Parish. The residents of each beat vote and elect a person known as supervisor to work the roads, etc. He is responsible for all the expenses for his beat. The Supervisors meet as a whole body to pass tax levees for each beat, to be able to pay the beat expenses. When the counties were first formed in the early 1800's the supervisors were called a Police Court operating the same as today. During this time the person taking care of the beats changed several time during the year. Most residents in the community would build and work the road such as they were at that time and bill the the county for work done. The person who found her relatives in beat 3 was that these persons lived in beat three at the time of the census was taken. The county offices (Tax Collector, Chancery Clerk, Circuit Clerk,) in the courthouses are elected by voters of the entire county. Thanks, Melissa
Hey Ya'll, The lists are back up after a couple weeks of being down. I have a new schedule at work and I have a little more time without the kids in the mornings to be on the computer so I thought we should take this opportunity to get the cemetery records updated. If any of you locals want to walk some cemeteries and record the new graves since the last compilations I'll be happy to add them. I'll be in Walnut next week and should be able to start on Harmony and perhaps a couple more. If you are interested in helping, take a look at what's online and try to send them to me in that same format so I can cut and paste them into the records. Most burials before 1980 or so are already on the web, we just need who as been buried since then. If any of you have researched lately on other sites you know that Tippah has the most info of any other Genweb site. Thanks again to all of you for helping make Tippah THE VERY BEST SITE on USGENWEB. Have a nice Thanksgiving! Sincerely, Melissa McCoy-Bell
Jimmy, I looked at my data wrong. I did find them in 1850. I SUSPECT that Josandin (Josina?) Garrison age 45 is possibly the father of James A. R. Garrison. He is certainly old enough. So Josandin would have been born about 1805. Looks like this family came into Mississippi between 1842 and 1850, probably with William B. and Elias Earl, as they received land patents in Tippah County in 1841. I could not find Elias in 1850 records. The Ann R. Garrison who's with James A. Garrison in 1850 and 1860 is a mystery.. Doubt if she is Josandin's mother, as she would have been only 12 in 1805 if her age is reported correctly in 1850. Elias Earl and William B. Garrison were sons of Charles Gregory Garrison and Frances Halbert of Greenville, SC. They came to Tippah County in about 1842. I have no info on a John A.R. Garrison in this line. Jimmy
Thanks Jimmy, If you have the 1850 Tippah County, MS census I would greatly appreciate a lookup for James A. Garrison in Tippah County that year. He was born 1821/1824 in SC, and was there in 1860 with, apparently, his mother Ann born 1793, and a Margaret or Martha Garrison age 42, and in 1870, I find him in Marshall County, MS married with wife Ann and children. I believe the GARRISON families who were in Tippah County, MS around 1841 were from York County, South Carolina. I am trying to ascertain the father of John A. R. Garrison, born about 1821 - 1824, who married Ann ? between 1850 and 1860 in Tippah County, MS. Land Patents Elias E Garrison MS 2980/653/547/ 1 /SW 13/ 6S 45 159.85 N 9248 Cash Entry 1841/ 10/ ON MS 2970/1056/547/ 1 / N 1/2 32/65 5E 319.46/N 11711 Cash Entry 1841/10/ON William B. Garrison 26 SC Ann 60 SC Amanda 42 SC Darcus 35 SC I suspect perhaps that Elias MAY BE James' father, as I find William B. later on in Prentiss County. 1860 Tippah County, MS I find: James A. R. I have kin folks in Desoto County that are their grand children. They really don't remember much about Sample Cartwright Mauney. They called her grandmother Mauney. Thanks for the help. She was born after the 1880 census and before the 1900 so she won't be on a census with her parents but should be in the 1900 with her husband. I just checked on the WorldConnect project ( http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi ) and found that three other people have posted there with this couple in their data. Also I noticed in another of your posts that you are from Ripley MS. You are luckier than most of us, that is where the records are located for Tippah Co. You also have a good genealogy room in the Ripley Library. They should have the two volumes of Tippah County Heritage books and see if someone has written about this family in them. If you can't find Tippah Co. information in those places it doesn't exist! Good luck. Walter
