Actually the same cemetery is also used for the remains of the modern day donated bodies. They are not buried induvidually but from what I understand, they are all cremated together and buried, in one large container, in one grave, and one marker. And, as you say, there is a ceremony once a year for the burial. I have been in the cemetery once and, for sure, there are normal type old tombstones and newer markers for the cremated cadavers. The ramains of the donated bodies are handled and handled with utmost dignity and proper respect. One site on the www says the "Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum" was in operation at the Jackson location from 1855 - 1935. It is sayed that there are many old lost graves that are not within the cemetery proper but sayed that the graves are scattered out over the genereal area where the cemetery is. Probably lost forever if this is true. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, October 09, 2006 1:22 PM Subject: Re: [MSRANKIN] Whitfield State Hospital > It's 2500 North State Street. I used to work there. There is a day set aside once a year for a ceremony of the cememtery, although I was under the impression the graveswere the people who had donated their bodies to science. I really don't know which - maybe both. Public Affairs should know, since the ceremony is sponsored by them every year. Just call 601-984-1000, and ask for Public Affairs. Good luck.
