Much of the information on this family comes from the manuscript of Myra Regina Schrader Harrell "Regina's Notebook" and old group sheets. Extensive efforts have been made over the past three years by a group of cousins to update and proof the claims made by Regina. She said the records are in the process of being computerized and it will take months before the process is done and that it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack at the moment. She wasn't a very friendly person. Anyway, I just re-read the article that was in the Brandon paper and it said that J. B. Montgomery will be given a preliminary hearing in the Justice of Peace court in Puckett. I will call them and see what they have to say.

Does anyone have a connection to the following PAYNE family of Rankin county, MS? Thomas J. Payne and Mary Ann Boothe Their children were: Arthur Nettie b. 1864 Virginia "Virgie" b. 1872 Lucindy b. 1874 William b. 1879 Luther Jackson b. 1886 m. Elsie Mae Hurst in 1904 This PAYNE family is listed in the 1870 Hinds county, MS census and the Rankin county, MS census in 1880. I figure that Thomas and Mary are both dead by 1900, because, Arthur, William, Virginia and Luther are listed with their uncle, James W. Payne, in Rankin county, MS. Was their a MS state census done between 1880 and 1900? If you can help me with this family, please contact me. Becky Roberts Columbus, Ohio
This is an article I found in a Memphis Civil War Newspaper, thought It might be of historical interest. MEMPHIS DAILY APPEAL MEMPHIS TENNESSEE December 9, 1860, page 2 column 2 A Gentleman of this City now travelling Mississippi says the NASHVILLE GAZETTE, writes back to a friend as follows: the futher down I get, the more secession I see. Not content with wearing the blue cockade themselves, the people put them up on wagons, carriages, riding horses etc, at one place where I stopped all the Negroes had them on. You may safely put Mississippi down as dead out for secession. I was just wondering if my folks back then, was as happy about it as this article makes them sound. History note : John
