You're right. I should know by now not to go from memory. Several of my Hilton kinfolk being Methodist are buried there and Westleyanna both Methodist cemeteries. Yes Richard's web page has been a God send for me in living out of state and both parents families being from Simpson County. I've gotten some genalogy research that has Star as being listed in Simpson County. I think that since a lot of the folks just across the county line say they live in Star but live in Simpson County causes this confusion. -------------- Original message -------------- > Rexford is online too on Richard Neely's Simpson County site,,,, and it's > Methodist :-) > > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: > To: > Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2005 7:41 AM > Subject: Re: [MSRANKIN] Cemeteries in or near Star > > > > There are two main cemeteries in/near Star. There are two main cemeteries in/near Star. The Methodist cemetery, Westleyanna, at the "Y" of Old (Old?) US Hwy 49 and Westville Rd. just north-northwest of Star. And the Baptist cemetery, Star or formally known as the Kelly Cemetery, just east of US 49 on what was called Star-Brandon Rd. now know as Star Rd. and also know as MS Hwy 471 but I don't know of any signs designating it that from Star to Brandon. There are several private cemeteries w/in 5-10 miles that some folks consider as being "in" Star including Rexford Baptist Church Cemetery even though it is in Simpson County. -------------- Original message -------------- > Can anyone out there help me locate a cemetery in Star. I remember going by his house with Dad when I was a kid and for some reason I was think the he worked in the RR shops or crews. Dad was a conductor and worked for the IC from about 1952 until 1997. Seems like Simp made Dad some "Fire Dogs" out of track rails so that might be where I'm getting the RR connection. What is the Star Geography 101? Is there a link? The establishment of Star was solely by the RR. One reference I have as to the naming of Star was the honor was given to a RR VP's wife and she named it Star in that it was going to be shinning light to the state of Mississippi or something to that effect. Dad and I found that in a book at the Bay Springs library while doing some geanlogy research on his side of the family in Jasper County.

Can anyone out there help me locate a cemetery in Star. I have great grandparents buried in one. I learned it years ago in a conversation that they were buried in a cemetery in Star, MS. Would appreciate any help I can get to locate their graves and data on their tombstones (if they have one. )

My Mom served as Asst. Postmaster until the position opened up at Star. She had a book that cronicled the history of the school and that of the founder Dr. Jones. Who was your Father? Dad was from Pinola but he knew a lot of folks from Mendenhall. Mom passed away in 1997 but Dad is still living.

I've always looked at the 1895 Atlas of Rankin and Star not being shown at all but Cherry was near so I rushed in and thought the two was the same and maybe the RR changed the name as in Steen Creek/Florence. Relooking at the atlas (online) and doing the triangleation thing off Thomasville Cato Braxton it appears that Cherry was about 2 miles NE of Star and a couple miles due south of Thomasville. which put in the middle of nowhere. All that being compared to a modern county map. I think there might be a modern day gravel pit about where Cherry is shown in 1895. http://www.livgenmi.com/1895/MS/County/rankin.htm I may also need correcting on the the King and Mountain Creek area. I have quite a few Dear ancestors buried at Mt Creek and both my Stevens g-grandparents. Star not being on the 1895 map, could the RR have named their new stop or wood yard, etc Star after 1895?. I think the Gulf & Ship Island was put through there not long after that. I've posted this to the forum for further discussions,, Star Geography 101 All the Dears mentioned are first / second cousins, Uncle Simp was my great uncle,,younger brother to my grandfather Will Dear died 1968,, both buried Rexford jerry

Didn't realize that posts to the board when out on the mailing list. I just discovered the mailing list and I've been reading the responses. Don't worry about rambling to me I've got numerous hours of interviews of some of the older Star residents. Mrs. Myrtle Finch (about 90), Dora Jean Mangum Whatley (about 75), Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bell (about 85), etc. I did talk with Sidney Garrett, he's moved back to Star after living in Colorado and he's trying to get me a copy of the old Garrett's store. I do have a picture of the bank stock, Post Office, Hotel, depot, etc. I noted your comment about Cherry and I kind of question that even though its in the USGS as an AKA, but Cherry and Star co-existed at least as Post Offices until the Cherry PO was closed and the records were sent to Monterey. I wondered why is they were the same that it was sent to the Star PO. Do/did you know DC, Denver, or Simp Dear? Denver and Simp have since passed on but DC still lives near the county line on the Star-Braxton Rd. (I think its call Rockwood Rd. at Star.) I saw him at Church last month while I was spending a week with Dad. I haven't had a chance to interview him yet. My connection is through the Hilton's that are related to the Barlow's, Glass's, Steen's, McCann's, Gray's, Phillip's, Loflin's, etc. If you want to rammble some more just email me directly if don't think others would be interested.

I meant it for the whole forum so here tis copied/pasted. +++++++++ Put me on your list too. I'm from Jackson but did a lot of growing up around Star and remember a little bit of Star and area during the 1950-60's. My garndparents were the Dears living about 3 miles south of Star on waht is now callled Rock Wood Rd. Back then probably called Star/Braxton or Star/Harrisville Rd. To me it was Granddaddy's Road. They lived about a mile south of the Rock House. The old house, built about 1900, still stands but........... My mother, class of 34, and her siblings finished high school at the old Star School which still stands and is unoccupied now as far as I know. Micael, you may have already, you might round up more contributors to your pictoral book if you post your message on the sevearl surname lists and forums of the old names of the Star area. Dear, Ross, Garrett, Mangum, Loflin, etc, etc etc just to name a few. Many class group pictures of the old school should be out there and just needs flushing out. And btw, as we all know, Star was called Cherry before becoming know as Star. Connie may be able to elaborate on the name change. ++++++++++++ back to real time: Mike, since I posted the above, it looks like your Star idea is gonna take off. I wish I had photos to contribute but none except about a gillion of folks posing in the front yard of the old house and that was three miles from Star. You mention Piney Woods and Braxton so if including surrounding olden communities to Star, throw in Dry Creek/Thomasville. I have two Stevens aunts buried there married Garrtet and Myers. Mountain Creek aka King and Rexford. Talking of Piney Woods, my mother, born 1913, talked about my grandfather, Will Dear, loading all the family up in a mule and wagon and going to Piney Woods for singings or singing programs put on by the students. My mother said granddady and Dr Jones, the master, were good friends. Of course everybody within a mile of the school was probably good friends with Dr. Jones. And not to get to off topic but Dianne mentioned Mt Creek,,Mt Creek Baptist was and still is very photogenic for your pictoral, and Rexford, Holy Grove, Dry Creek, Piney Woods and on and on and on. Depending how much Star lore and stories you want, I know two senior Dears still very sharp that may have lots to add. Speaking of the G&SI, my aunt, in her 80's who still has the old house mentioned above recalls as a child of riding the passenger train from Star to Jackson to have her tonsils taken out. And my granddady working as a night watchman in Star for the RR for a dollar a day,,,of course probably late fall after the crops were in. I've heard about the old movie theatre that was across the road from old Mangums store,,up near the rr tracks. I'll have to get more info about that lore. I'd love to see some old pics of the old Magum store and Mahaffys store in Braxton. Does anybody remeber the rock house?? Sorry about the rambling. Jerry Stevens Jackson

Howdy! Have you found a photo of the G&SI depot in Star? I think Forrest Lamar Cooper in Florence had one at one time. The depot had a huge star on the end of it! If you find any railroad photos, or any of the Finkbine Lbr. Co. mill, logging operations, or log trains, I would be most interested. Even though there are several photos of the Finkbine operation at Wiggins, I have seen very few at D'Lo. Best wishes, Tony Howe Ocean Springs, Miss.

Also the RR crew laying the track near Florence as they headed south towards Star which caused the "birth" of Star etc. I do know of some Laird's, White's, and Dear's but I guess the Stuckey's and Sebren's have all moved away. I know there a several Sebren's around Harrisville.
