    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/XJB.2ACE/590.1 Message Board Post: According to the Rankin County History, Vol.1 published by the Rankin County Historical Society, there is NO community or place as OAKLAND. It would be OAKDALE so named for the many oak trees in the area. This community's name was changed to LANGFORD in 1890 and so named for the first postmasted, Charles R. Langford. This community is located between Fannin and Brandon, Ms on Hwy 471. Of interest is the OAKDALE BAPTIST CHURCH AND CEMETERY located in the community of Langford. I have seen the same listing as Oakland, but that is an error.

Surnames: Wallace, Nash, Ray, Foster, Warfield, Warren, Love Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/XJB.2ACE/588 Message Board Post: I am doing my boyfriend's family's genealogy & have just located his father's family in Rankin co in the 1910 & 1920 census. His father has been deceased since 1994 & we have very little info. Also, he is African American & this is my first journey into doing anything in the south & I'm really out of my element. Plus, it is my understanding that the records probably won't be as plentiful or as easy to find as they have been for my family here in Illinois. I know his father Lenin D Wallace, refered to in the census as Leonard, was supposedly born in Brandon, MS in 1916. I find them in Fannin in 1910 & 1920. I do have an ancestry subscription & the only thing I've found there specifically to MS are the marriages. Lenin's father was Thomas Wallace & grandfather was Frank Wallace, both I've got in the 1910 & 1920 census. But, so far, that's all I've found on them. Are there any other searchable records available elsewhere? Also, I'm very bad at figuring out what's what in the LDS films. Does anyone know what there is available for that area of MS that's available? The most important info my boyfriend would like is what his first ancestor's original name was when he was brought here. Is it at all realistic that info is available out there somewhere to even find? It is my understanding that when they were brought here as slaves they were given their master's name, is that correct? I'm way over my head in this. I've been doing my family for years, but central european research is nothing compared to this. Any & all assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure if he was born in the USA or Scottland, but I know there were brothers who came from Scottland. There was a Thomas, George, and William Rankin. One of the Rankins married a Crawford. Nathan had sisters, Dora, Ida both married Baxters in Mississippi. Lamar County to the best of my knowledge. Another sister "Deanie" married a Ward from around Marion County, in MS.

I think I've submitted pictures for fifteen or so cemeteries in Rankin County -- for some just a few pictures, for others (e.g., Brandon Cemetery and Florence Cemetery) a good many. I'm by no means a great photographer -- the pictures vary widely in quality (based mainly on the luck of the snap). But if you see any you could use, feel free to use them. My findagrave name is given as "NM" -- if you click on those initials, you'll see a blurb saying that anybody is welcome to use any of the pictures in any way. I've noticed, by the way, that some GenWeb county coordinators simply put links to findagrave.com on their sites -- either to the findagrave listing for the whole county or to specific cemeteries. -- Natalie Maynor http://www.maynor.net/Genealogy/
