I believe R.M. to be my gg-grandfather Robert M. Rutherford who was living in Texas in 1860. He was married to Epsey Ann Lewis in Rankin County, MS in 1850. The fact that Volney appears in two places at one time makes me think R.M. could be listed with his parents and on his own in Texas.

Fran, Searching the www for anything on a cemetery at the state hospital at Whiftield hit on these articles. -------------------------- The Mississippi State Hospital Cemetery, established in 1936, is being restored by a team of 12 AmeriCorps members from all parts of the country assisting MSH's Maintenance Department with realigning grave markers, installing an irrigation system, restoring the outdoor chapel and landscaping the grounds. More than 4,000 people are buried in the cemetery that has withered with age. Mississippi State Hospital is seeking donations to restore their Rose Hill Cemetery, which began in 1936, to its natural beauty. More than 4,000 people from MSH are buried in the cemetery, located off Hwy. 468 in Rankin County. In October of 2003, Americorps volunteers made tremendous steps in giving the cemetery a facelift, but there is still much work to be done in improving and keeping up the ground's appearance. Monies donated will be used to complete the restoration process and to construct a monument in the cemetery in memory of those buried there. To contribute, send donations to Friends of Mississippi State Hospital, P.O. Box 75, Whitfield, MS 39193. For more information, contact Belvia Ferguson, coordinator of development, at (601) 351-8335 or [email protected] ------------------------------- It appears the cemetery is named Rose Hill and a large cemetery of several thousand graves. For some reason the cemetery does not appear on any maps that I have, or online maps. http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=12&Z=15&X=970&Y=4462&W=3&q s=%7cpearl%7cms%7c Other articles onlines says the graves were mostly unmarked until the1960s except for numbers. Writing the hospital for your info on Paul may uncover something. http://www.msh.state.ms.us/ Or maybe call the number mentioned in the attached article above. good luck jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 21, 2006 7:02 PM Subject: [MSRANKIN] Whitfield State Hospital > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XJB.2ACE/605 > > Message Board Post: > > I am looking for the date of death and burial place of a distant relative who is believed to have been living in Whitfield at the time of his death.
