In reviewing some probate court minutes for Rankin Co. I see an Elijah E. Jones mentioned around 1850. I have not ordered anything yet, and I don't believe this is the same person as my Elijah Jones, since he was born in 1854, but am wondering if there is a connection. Doris

I believe my great-grandmother, Matilda Mitcham, is the M. L. Mitcham listed in the 1880 census at the asylum. Her husband, William L. Mitcham, divorced her in 1874 and I think may have had her committed prior to that. He married again in 1875. I would really appreciate knowing if she is buried at the old Asylum Cemetery at the UMMC Campus in Jackson, the date of her death and any other records that may be extant. I contacted Whitfield some time ago and was told that if there were records that I could only get the date of her admittance and release but no medical information. I am not sure of why that is held private after 72 years. I was able to get her medical record from the Georgia Archives regarding her committment at Milledgeville in 1860. They migrated to Mississippi after the War. I don't know what contact, if any, she had with her children after the divorce and hospitalization. If she is buried there and there is a tombstone I would like to get pictures of it. I have a relative who can do that for me when he goes through Jackson on business. I would like to plan another trip to Jackson to do further research if possible, too. But that will have to wait for a couple of months because of other committments right now. Thanks for any help or suggestions. Iras Smith Mobile, AL
Actually the same cemetery is also used for the remains of the modern day donated bodies. They are not buried induvidually but from what I understand, they are all cremated together and buried, in one large container, in one grave, and one marker. And, as you say, there is a ceremony once a year for the burial. I have been in the cemetery once and, for sure, there are normal type old tombstones and newer markers for the cremated cadavers. The ramains of the donated bodies are handled and handled with utmost dignity and proper respect. One site on the www says the "Mississippi State Lunatic Asylum" was in operation at the Jackson location from 1855 - 1935. It is sayed that there are many old lost graves that are not within the cemetery proper but sayed that the graves are scattered out over the genereal area where the cemetery is. Probably lost forever if this is true. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, October 09, 2006 1:22 PM Subject: Re: [MSRANKIN] Whitfield State Hospital > It's 2500 North State Street. The State Hospital was located in Hinds County, Jackson, untill soemtimes up into the 1900s before relocating the Whitfield Location in Rankin County. Around 1880 it would have been at the present location of the University Mississippi Med Center, 2200 N State St. in Jackson. There is an old Asylum Cemetery still on the UMMC Campus fenced and under lock and key. I work there and can gain access to the cemetery if you have a name you would like researched. I have been told that there are many unmarked graves in the cemetery. This is probably a long shot beings there is a vast difference in dates but there is a 1930 State Asylum Census on the Hinds County Genweb site. Keep in mind this census would have been taken at the old site where UMMC is now. http://www.rootsweb.com/~mshinds2/1930asylumindex.html Others out there, correct me if I'm wrong on some of this, I'm shooting from the hip. good luck jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, October 09, 2006 2:27 AM Subject: Re: [MSRANKIN] Whitfield State Hospital > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: WOODS, PEEPLES > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XJB.2ACE/605.2 > > Message Board Post: > > Hi, > I am looking for information on a brother of my Great Grandfather that might have been admitted to Whitfield in the late 1800's, maybe 1870 or so. Jesse David Graves, son of Wig, did marry a Mary Ada, but he also had a sister Ada, who married William Walker. She was also the daughter of Wig. Do you have much on Wig? He was born February 6, 1851 and married Martha Ann (Mattie) Kersh. She died in 1917, after which he married his childhood sweetheart (I do not know her name and there were several D. W. Graves who married during that time period. In 1920 he married Mar. Charity Bradley. Wig died 03 April 1925. The informant on his death certificate was listed as Mrs. A. E. Graves, identified as his wife. I don't know who she is. His mother was listed as a "Drummons". Both parents were from Alabama. What I don't understand is that on the census reports he is listed as David A. Graves, with the same children in his household, including Ada, but then becomes David Wiggins Graves, with the same birthdate and same children. Do you know how! this came about? I have the civil war record of David A. Graves and it describes him as 6' tall, dark complected, dark hair, and grey eyes. I'll be glad to share any info I have. Thanks, Lucy

Jesse David Graves married Lou Walker and had three children by her. After her death the three sons lived with her grandfather. Jesse then married Mary Ada Miley, who died in 1917. Jesse was born 1883 and died 1935. The father of Jesse is either David A. or David W. (census reports show both) but there was definitely a David Wiggins, called Wig, Graves who married Mattie Kersh. Hope this helps.
