Here are two versions of the history of James Jefferson Johnson. He has many descendants still living in and around Pontotoc Co. Family history tells that James J Johnson's father was a sea captain or an officer on a ship when he died. They lived in Murfreesboro, TN. A sailor on the ship brought the belongings to the family and married James J's mother. James and his mother and step-father (unknown) came to Mississippi on their way to Alabama. A storm emerged and they decided to stay with the Lewis M Jenkins family in Pontotoc Co MS. When his family left for Alabama, James wanted to stay in MS, however, he went on. It is said he walked all the way back to MS and resided with the Jenkins family. They lived southeast of Pontotoc in the Ebernezer Community. He was about fourteen which would have been about 1836. James Jefferson Johnson fought with the Confederacy in the War between the States in the Mississippi Division, 41st Company, H. Calvary. He was a little over forty years of age at the time. He has a Confederate marker by his grave in the Pleasant Grove Cem, Pontotoc Co MS. Edith Simpson of Tupelo has his war record on hand. He was taken prisoner and when he got his freedom, he went A.W.O.L from the Army. >From Jane Talley Nichols (ren@hiwaay.net) My 4th great grandfather, Henry Hubbard Talley, married his second wife, Charlcy Southerland Johnson, in 1858. She already had two sons by her first marriage, James Jefferson Johnson and Adam J Johnson. Charlcy Southerland Johnson was born in AR March 12, 1827, died January 12, 1900, Jackson Co, AL. Adam J Johnson and family, Charlcy, and Henry are buried in Jackson Co AL. All we know about James Jefferson Johnson is he left and nobody ever heard from him again. We cannot find out anything about Charlcy Johnson Talley's first husband. She married Henry in 1857. Adam was born in 1850 and named one of his sons after his brother, James Jefferson Johnson. I have all the information from Henry Hubbard Talley and Charlcy Southerland Johnson on down. Henry also had a first wife and family which I descend from. Very close friends of ours are direct descendants of Charlcy Johnson Talley, Adam J Johnson and his son James Jefferson Johnson. We have searched high and low for ! Charlcy's son James Jefferson Johnson with no luck. This would be a miracle if it is the same person. James Jefferson was older than Adam J, but I do not know his dob. Charlcy Southerland Johnson was widowed when she married my Henry Talley. His wife died in Dalton GA in 1865, and we haven't figured out how they ended up in Jackson Co, AL. Most of his family is buried there.
