    3. Shanta, You might want to try your nearest Family History Center which is a branch of the Mormon Family HIstory Library. They should have rolls of microfilm for the years you need, except for 1890, which was mostly destroyed in a fire. Good Luck in your quest. 1. [MSPONTOT] WHAT IS A ROLL CALL?
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi everyone, I've had seven messages this morning asking about roll calls and what they are. We seem to have newbies here who are new to this discussion-list event. Rather than answer all the messages individually, then possibly receive more later on, I figured I'd just bring the subject before everyone. Since you're in the middle of a roll call already, there won't be any guidelines, etc. ~ just a brief discussion to answer the subject-line question. Roll call is a reporting-in by everyone on the list where you tell the membership who you're looking for in Pontotoc County. A lot of people just monitor a list, watching to see if someone posts his/her lines; those people are called 'lurkers'. With a roll call, even lurkers are supposed to place a query. Newbies (people new to genealogy and/or computers) are also lurkers a lot of times. They're afraid to post because they don't want to "look stupid" since they're not sure of what they're doing. The best way to get past that is to alert the list in the first line that you *are* a newbie and need help. Then go on to your post. The third type of lurker is someone who's literally refused to post because they've been flamed by someone either on this list or another one. (For you newbies, 'flamed' means verbally attacked through e-mail.) After reading the archives, I can see that it hasn't happened here, but there are lists where people are really treated badly. So, that person doesn't join in any list because they have serious trust issues now. A prime goal for me personally is to bring lurkers out of their corners and get them to participate in list discussions. That happens only after a period of time when you, the list membership, get to know me. Roll calls don't happen all year long and many lists don't have them at all. I hold roll calls generally twice a year, depending on the number of new people that come onboard. As a matter of fact, I had already planned to hold one here until I read the archives and saw that one of the list members had generated one already ~ and that's a good thing because everyone was so, so quiet. :) I hope this answers everyone's questions. If not, please ask. Colleen

    1. [MSPONTOT] Rollcall
    2. Ralph Gaskin
    3. The names I'm researching are Richardson and Burks. My great grandparents, Frances Maria Richardson and John P. Burks, were married in Pontotoc Co. 25 Dec. 1865. I've been able to make some connections with Richardsons in Pontotoc Co., but none with Burkses. John P. Burks was in a unit in the Civil War that was raised in Pontotoc Co. (Fredonia). I would appreciate any information. Thanks, Sharon

    3. > Hi! I am researching Bacons. My ggrandfather was Waddy A. Bacon. He had a brother, William Henry and a sister, Harriet Parks Bacon Dickson who married James Rainey Dickson. My grandmother, Hattie Bacon Robertson, named my Mother, Lela after their daughter, Lela. The families corresponded at least until the 40's. I have a letter from two nieces of Lela Dickson but no address. It was Lela Dickson who launched my genealogical quest of the Bacon family. Around 1915, she made inquires to the then War Department about ancestors linking her to the Revolutionary War. The information she received and sent to my Mother gave me the name of my gggrandfather, Edmund Parks Bacon and from there, years later we have traced our line back to Captain Edmund Bacon, circa 1660 in Virginia. Records linking him to English ancestors were burned, although there are many theories regarding the connection. This September, I am going to England on a genealogical study and hope to make the connection there. I have had limited contact with William Henry's descendants but no promised details. My ggrandfther, Waddy Bacon took his family to homestead on Sarasota Bay in Florida in the mid 1870's. I have that pretty well covered but would like more information on his life in Mississippi. I leave today for a month in UK but any info you might be able to send me. if there is a connection, could be forwarded to me by one of my sons. Than you for your time.
