Annice, Thanks for responding to my query about the surname Bishop. Two Bishop ladies married into my Yerby family. John C. Yerby, b. 1852, married on June 11, 1874 in Oktibbeha Co. MS to Miss M. V. (Vincy) Bishop, b. 1855. John C. was the s/o Enoch, Sr. and Narcisss Burroughs Yerby. J. S. Yerby, (Jr.), married on Dec. 17, 1897 in Webster Co., MS to Lona Bishop. Consent for the marriage given by their fathers,J.S. Yerby, (Sr.) and Jeff Bishop. J. S. Yerby, (Sr.) was probably the s/o Enoch, Sr. and Narcissa Burroughs Yerby, Although, their son was listed on the 1850 Tuscaloosa Co., AL census as James B. Yerby, age 1 year old. I believe that J.S. Yerby, Sr. and James B. Yerby may be the same person. If M. Vincy Bishop Yerby or Lona Bishop Yerby are listed in any of your Bishop families, I would be grateful for info about their families. Thanks, Hildred Carlson
Here are two versions of the history of James Jefferson Johnson. He has many descendants still living in and around Pontotoc Co. Family history tells that James J Johnson's father was a sea captain or an officer on a ship when he died. They lived in Murfreesboro, TN. A sailor on the ship brought the belongings to the family and married James J's mother. James and his mother and step-father (unknown) came to Mississippi on their way to Alabama. A storm emerged and they decided to stay with the Lewis M Jenkins family in Pontotoc Co MS. When his family left for Alabama, James wanted to stay in MS, however, he went on. It is said he walked all the way back to MS and resided with the Jenkins family. They lived southeast of Pontotoc in the Ebernezer Community. He was about fourteen which would have been about 1836. James Jefferson Johnson fought with the Confederacy in the War between the States in the Mississippi Division, 41st Company, H. Calvary. He was a little over forty years of age at the time. He has a Confederate marker by his grave in the Pleasant Grove Cem, Pontotoc Co MS. Edith Simpson of Tupelo has his war record on hand. He was taken prisoner and when he got his freedom, he went A.W.O.L from the Army. >From Jane Talley Nichols (ren@hiwaay.net) My 4th great grandfather, Henry Hubbard Talley, married his second wife, Charlcy Southerland Johnson, in 1858. She already had two sons by her first marriage, James Jefferson Johnson and Adam J Johnson. Charlcy Southerland Johnson was born in AR March 12, 1827, died January 12, 1900, Jackson Co, AL. Adam J Johnson and family, Charlcy, and Henry are buried in Jackson Co AL. All we know about James Jefferson Johnson is he left and nobody ever heard from him again. We cannot find out anything about Charlcy Johnson Talley's first husband. She married Henry in 1857. Adam was born in 1850 and named one of his sons after his brother, James Jefferson Johnson. I have all the information from Henry Hubbard Talley and Charlcy Southerland Johnson on down. Henry also had a first wife and family which I descend from. Very close friends of ours are direct descendants of Charlcy Johnson Talley, Adam J Johnson and his son James Jefferson Johnson. We have searched high and low for ! Charlcy's son James Jefferson Johnson with no luck. This would be a miracle if it is the same person. James Jefferson was older than Adam J, but I do not know his dob. Charlcy Southerland Johnson was widowed when she married my Henry Talley. His wife died in Dalton GA in 1865, and we haven't figured out how they ended up in Jackson Co, AL. Most of his family is buried there.
Does anyone know if there is a list for one to put your name on for the book "From these Hills'. Mr. Owens told me Sunday that there is a lot in there about my family the Colberts. Thanks, Shirley in Pensacola
Yes, he is. My husband and I were privileged to go on a tour of the battle field where the guide pointed out where T. G. and his sons died. Hi All---I am muddling along with my Pontotoc families and here they are: Walker Watts Hartley Owen Pannell Bright Page Dye Hunt Patricia
Greenbury WORTHY and Elizabeth PERRY married 1838 in SC - she would have only been 17 since she was born 1821 Worthy children born in South Carolina: Sarah A b Jan1839 Fleming John b 28Nov1839 Chester Co SC (have death cert) Jackson b 1841 Levi A b 1842 in Alabama: Asa A b 1845 May P b 1847 in Mississippi: Melem M b 1849 (also seen it spelled Milens) Elizabeth b 1853 (All but John were on the Tippah Co MS 1850 census) born in Tennessee: James M b 1857 After GB died in 1856/57, Elizabeth remarried but apprently she died shortly afterward, still in 1857. The children escaped their stepfather and ran away to Pontotoc Co to live with their grandparents, Jeremiah and Frances PERRY. The youngest children, Elizabeth and James, appear on the 1860 Pontotoc Co census with grandparents. But other than info below on John, I haven't found any of the other children. Fleming John WORTHY joined the CSA in Cherry Creek, Pontotoc Co and signed his Oath of Allegiance in Pontotoc Co after the Civil War ended. However, family stories from more than one source say that John killed a Yankee soldier who was drunk and threatening his grandmother with a sword while riding his horse on on her front porch (or in her house depending on the version). Fearing retribution from the Yankees, John fled to Texas and never returned to MS. Never saw anyone of his brothers or sisters again, although Asa was supposed to have written to him, vowing that as soon as he got out of the CSA he would join John in Texas, but he never arrived. I haven't found any records that indicate Asa was ever in the CSA. Nor have I found any of the other children.

Pontotoc Co. Pioneers Vol. VII #4 Winter 1986 has the 1890 Pontotoc County School Census - or a portion thereof as some large articles carried over from one edition to the next. This specific edition of P. Co. Pioneers can be found in the downtown public library Dallas, Tx. Another good Pontotoc source in downtown Dallas is N.E. McWhirter Murphy Hawthorn Cunningham Gillispie I have already corresponded with several of you concerning these surnames, but I am hoping that new people who have joined the list might have some new information concerning these hard-to-find ancestors, especially the Hawthorns and Cunninghams. Ann McWhirter Columbus, GA
Thanks Linda! Look forward to hearing from you. Holly
