There's not a Maxey Cemetery listed in the Cemetery Book? Could it be called by another name?
Hi, I have been lurking and have seen several possible connections, so I decided to post my Pontotoc County names. As some of you probably know, before the Civil War Pontotoc County covered a much larger area than the present day county does. So, some of my lines originated in Pontotoc County and after the war can be found in Union County and in Lee County. Montgomery McCraw Bryant Pilcher Ledbetter Pearson I am also interested in any collateral lines. Linda
There is a Campground Methodist Church located just oustide of the city of Pontotoc which is sometimes referred to as Mount Pleasant. My Hubbard ancestors helped found this church and there are ----- Original Message ----- From: <RDHUFFMAN@aol.com> To: <MSPONTOT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, April 27, 2002 12:21 PM Subject: [MSPONTOT] Woods family and Campground Cemetery > When you mention Campground Methodist Church, I wonder which you are > referring to. I don't know if Rudolphus or Rodolphus ever made it to Pontotoc or not. He might have stayed in Pickens Co., AL. MY gg grandfather was RANDOLPH Johnson and he was in Pontotoc Co. by 1850. I believe that he died between 1850 and 1860 because he sold his property in about 1854 and he was NOT on the 1860 census. His widow, Elizabeth (Ashby) was on the 1860 census, plus two of their sons - Jonathan and William, I believe, were still at home, farming. Don't have my notes right with me. One daughter, Susan, had married by then, I assume as she was not at home then. Sue
We may have corresponded before. Your name, Reece, seems familiar. My gg grandfather was a Ranson H. Brown, born in about 1813-15 - not sure just where - either Virginia or NC. He was in DeKalb Co., Alabama in the 1830's, married a Mariah Lamar in 1836. Their oldest child - Mary Undine Brown - was my great grandmother. I do believe that they moved to Pontotoc Co. sometime between 1850 and 1860 because that's where Mary Undine got married in 1858 - to a Joseph Abner Johnson. Also, some of Mariah Lamar's relatives had already moved to Pontotoc. Any connection? I have a Strickland line. My gg grandmother was Tamar Strickland born in 1768 in Guilford Co., NC. She married a William Gilbert and they moved to Georgia by 1800 at least, and where they settled and died. She had a younger sister who married a Littleberry Vaughan and they moved to Pontotoc. Any relation? I believe her name was Sarah (Sallie). Sue Howard SueHoward@prodigy.net
I have a Johnson connection in Pontotoc Co.: Randolph Johnson, born in about 1800 - somewhere in Tennessee, we think, and wife, Elizabeth (Ashby) Johnson, also born about 1800. They were previously in Jefferson Co., AL, Pickens Co., AL, and then on to Pontotoc. I believe he had a brother named Rodolphus or Rudolphus and one named George Cunningham Johnson. One of Randolph's sons - Joseph Abner (known as "Joab") Johnson, born in about 1837 in Jefferson Co., AL, was my great grandfather. He married Mary Undine Brown in July of 1858. Then they moved south to Neshoba Co., MS. Do we have a connection? Sue (Johnson) Howard

There was another book published called the Stegall's of Pontotoc Co. Anyone know how to get a copy of that one? Anisa Guy Ohio
Carolyn My ggg-grandfather Rufus Johnson married to Sarah ?, was on the 1870 census in Pontotoc County. It states that he was 70 years old and was from North Carolina. Sara was 57 and from Tenn. They were in the Tocapolla area. Was your Rudolphus in Pontotoc County? Is the Maxey Cemetery located in Pontotoc County? Thomas Shelton, Jr and Mary C. Tarver Shelton are both buried at Maxey Cemetery. "From These Hills". They arrived in 1836 from NC and listed in the 1840 Census - Chesterville. Georiga
When you mention Campground Methodist Church, I wonder which you are referring to. My Montgomery line were founding members of Campground Methodist Church and I had assumed that it was the one located on Campground Rd. off Hiway 15 right beside the Old Natchez Trace Trail. I could not locate any of their graves there though. I recently found out that there is a Campground Cemetery in Calhoun Co. that is close to the Co. line. I plan to visit that one soon. Found out about it from Rose diamond of the Calhoun Co. Rootsweb site. Hope this helps you. My apologies if it doesn't. Ronnie
