Ludean, I have been following your Pontotoc Co. List postings with interest but have been so busy monitoring the List that I haven't had time to reply. Do you know where in SC your John W. Rodgers was from or who his parents were? I am seeking information on James RODGERS b. 4 Nov 1823 in Abbeville District, SC, d. 22 July 1905 in Pontotoc Co., MS and Eliza Jane GILLESPIE b. 24 Sept 1825 in SC, d. 4 Sept 1902 in Pontotoc Co., MS. They were married 13 Dec 1842 in Newton Co., GA. James RODGERS was the youngest of 17 children. I believe two of his brothers may have been named Thomas and William RODGERS. James apparently went to GA with his family as a young boy. Since he was the youngest of 17 children, I speculate that some of his older siblings were probably already married, on their own and going their own way when his family moved to GA. I do not know his parents or other siblings. James and Eliza RODGERS had the following children: Saletia (Salita?) Ann b. 2 May 1844 in GA? Julia Francis b. 14 Aug 1847 in MS (my g-g-grdmother) Mary Jane b. 8 Feb 1851 in Pontotoc Co., MS Anna Martha b. 12 May 1855 James Samuel b. 3 May 1860 in MS Elizabeth L. b. 1863 in MS William Jefferson b. 4 Feb 1866 in Pontotoc Co., MS I have more information on most of these children. I am wondering if your John W. RODGERS could have been a sibling of my James RODGERS and did not move with his parents to GA??? What do you think? Mary K. Miller mil1276@dellepro.com
I have found your mistake on your database. You have Gertrude Stegall as the only child of Jerry Buck Stegall. You also have her listed along with her brothers and sisters as the children of J.G. Stegall. J.G. Stegall and Jerry Buck are the same person and Gertrude was not the only child of his and Lottie's. Also her sister was named Hettie, not Hattie. Hettie never married. Since Gertrude was my grandmother, I can fill in lots of your missing pieces in that family. She died last year, Feb.22 '01. Her husband, L.C. Anderson died March 1 '82 or '83. Will get the exact year for you. I have already told you that Grace Stegall married Ray Edwards. I told you she is the mother of Peggy Ray Edwards Pratt but there was also another child, Donald Edwards. I also notice that you had no information on the other children of J.G. (Buck) Stegall. Clara married Edward Sewell and had one child Kittie Mae Sewell . Ina Mae Stegall married Emit Crow who was form Ok and took her back there with him. She died a few years ago. They lived in Geronimo, OK and had these children: Elva Jo and Jerry Jefferson Crow. I will have to get more information on the other brothers of Gertrude from Mother. My mother is Gertrude Stegall and L.C. Anderson's daughter, Maxine. She married Billy Hodges whom you have no information on. I am their child. Maxine Anderson and Billy Hodges had two children: Alesia Kay and Billy Kerry Hodges. Maxine is still living and Billy died on July 31 '93. I am Alesia Kay Hodges and married Richard Dale Smith on Jan. 7, 1978. We have one child: Robin Kay Smith. My brother, Billy Kerry Hodges married Michelle Scivally and they have one child: Mikaela Paige Hodges. I will put more information together and send as I see what you are missing from your database. Address any questions to me and I will try and answer them for you. I am also curious about whether there are any Lamar family descendants out there. My great grandmother, Mary Undine Brown's mother was a Mariah Lamar before marriage to Ransom H. Brown (married in 1836 in DeKalb Co., GA). Still trying to prove that Mariah and Ransom were in Pontotoc Co., problem being that they were probably there between census years - between 1850 and 1860. I know that Mariah had Lamar relatives who went to Pontotoc Co. and it seems logical that they might followed them there. I also think that Mariah (Lamar) Brown probably died in Pontotoc Co. between 1850 and 1860. Would like to know where she is buried. Is there anyone out there who has a lot of cemetery information? Thanks again. Sue (Johnson) Howard SueHoward@prodigy.net
Anybody out there who descends from either Ambrose Carter or Frances Brown or both? I'm thinking that Frances Brown might be a sister to my great grandmother, Mary Undine Brown. Mary got married to Joseph Abner Johnson in Pontotoc Co. in July 1858. Ambrose and Frances got married later - like 1861. My Mary DID have a sister named Frances who was listed as being at home in Neshoba Co. with her father and stepmother on the 1860 census, and she was only 17 on the census, but of couse, by 1861, she would have been 18 and probably old enough to go back to Pontotoc Co. to get married. Any comments on any of this? Sue (Johnson) Howard SueHoward@prodigy.net
I have a copy of a Deed from Andrew J. Hanks to my great, great grandfather, Randolph JOHNSON, from November 1850. If I copy the wording about the location, would anybody on this list be able to tell me what cemetery they think it's talking about?? Here is what it says: "Know all men by these presents that I, Andrew J. Hanks, for and in consideration of the sum of Eight Hundred Dollars to me paid by Randolph Johnson the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have bargained and sold and do hereby bargain sell and convey unto said Randolph Johnson the following described tract of land lying and situated in Pontotoc County State of Mississippi to wit the east half of the North east quarter and the East half of the South east quarter of Section Twenty One in Township ten of Range four East containing one hundred and sixty acres more or less according to the surveys with the exception of one and thirteen sixteenths of an acre which was appropriated to the Baptist Church and for a burying ground to have and to hold the said granted land to the said Randolph Johnson his heirs and assigns in fee simple forever and I do hereby warrant and agree to defend the title to said land to the said Randolph Johnson his heirs and assigns against the legal clai! ms or demands of all other powers whatsoever." Or if you don't know where this land might be and/or what cemetery, where do you think I might be able to get this information? Thanks for any help given. Sue Howard SueHoward@prodigy.net

I saw that you have Peggy Ray Edwards in your database. However there is no information on her parents. Her mother was Grace Stegall. Aunt Grace was the sister of my grandmother, Gertrude Stegall Anderson. Her father was Ray Edwards. ----- Original Message ----- From: <anita@warren.net> To: <MSPONTOT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, April 30, 2002 7:57 AM Subject: [MSPONTOT] Attention Richard Smith, re: Stegall, Roye and Anderson > Richard, > > I also have these 3 surnames in my family in Pontotoc. > Starting with Lemuel Cater > Roye b. What a boo-boo, Rosemary, I failed to include the spouse of Selina Freeman. HIs name was J. R. Furg/Ferguson. Sorry, Ann
I have enjoyed the roll call, even tho I didn't find out anything concrete about my Rodgers/Sanders family. I thought I would give a success story from another list that I subscribe to: I went searching in Craighead County, Arkansas list for the name of Rogers, which is how it is spelled in Arkansas. In one of the messages, I found someone looking for her grandfather, who was my uncle. My uncle's children had asked me to be on the lookout for their sister they had never seen, as she was from their father's first marriage and her mother had remarried and taken her to California. When I found the message, I emailed the lady, thinking her email address may have changed, but it hadn't and she answered. Her mother, the lost sister, was living and is 72 years old. I called my cousins in Arkansas and told them about their lost sister and to make a long story short, the author on the list and her mother flew into Arkansas for a week's visit with their lost family. The lost sister had been raised as an only child and she had a lot of questions about her father, etc. The family in Arkansas live in Greene County at this time, but had lived in Craighead County at an earlier date. We had an enjoyable family reunion while the family from California were here. There were write-up's in three newspapers of the area and one of those write-ups is on the rootsweb site for Greene County, Arkansas. This uncle of mine and his siblings, including my father, were from Pontotoc County, Mississippi, so I still have hopes of finding out more about my Pontotoc County ancestors. I should also tell you that you are directing this to my husband's name, Richard. I am new at this and neglected to give you my name. I have found the connection. I can help you with some missing information on your database as I am one of the missing. My ggrandmother, Lena Roye was married to William Samuel L. Anderson. My grandfather was L. C. Anderson, their oldest child. My mother is Ludie Maxine Anderson, the daughter of L.C. and Gertrude Stegall Anderson. Let me know if that helps you and I can also give you some birth dates you are missing. Mother can give you much more information than I can. You may want to direct some questions to her, Maxine Hodges. But I have Mama's (Gertrude Stegall Anderson) Bible which has some birth dates listed in it. Hi everyone, The roll call has been going on for quite some time now and the discussion here has been ultra-fantastic! I can tell from the way you're all talking with one another that this has been a LONG time coming, and many of you were/are starving for information. However, roll calls normally only last two weeks. I believe this one has been going on for a month now. Since the time for one has obviously expired, let's just shift the focus a little. Roll call for this month is now ended. In an effort to maintain the peace on a heavily trafficked list, I'd like you to please do the following: 1. <SNIP> an originator's message when you're responding to only a portion of one. Leave only that part you're responding to ~ enough for the originator of the message to recognize his/her message and for the rest of us to understand what you're referring to. 2. Please continue to post your queries. All you have to do is leave 'Roll Call' out of your subject line. 4. REGARDING SUBJECT LINES: If you're looking for ancestral names of Green, Black, and Purple :) then please say so in your subject line. I'm one of those who receives humongous loads of email every day (over 1,200 messages/day) and I want to tell you that having to open each one that has a subject heading of just 'roll call' causes me to want to delete them all. Of course, *I* won't do that to your messages simply because I want to make sure you're having an okay day and I'm not missing something. However, that does NOT mean that your co-members aren't doing that. If you care enough and spend your valuable time to build a roll call message, please don't sabotage your own efforts by giving to general a subject heading. The perfect subject line is: Purple, John (1742-1795), MS<GA<VA That subject line tells me immediately who you're looking for, the years he lived, and his life's trail. Not everyone has all that information, but if you can get at least half of that data in your subject line, you'll be doing yourself a HUGE favor. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I think you all should know ... in just this month (April), you have posted more messages (355) than in all of the months since April 2000 combined! May will be quieter, I'm sure; but now that the ice is broken, hopefully none of you wil remain as quiet as you were before. If you made connections with an inline cousin, please share your good news with the rest of us. It's encouraging to the rest of us to know that at least *some* progress is being made. I hope this finds you all having a WONDERFUL week! :) Colleen
