Dear Listers, I am interested in the family of Alexander Penny, who arrived in Noxubee County ca. 1836, from Wake County, NC. My specific question is: How did the early settlers acquire their land titles? I know that Noxubee was the first county formed from the Choctaw lands after the Choctaw Session of 1830, but don't know whether the first land owners acquired title through a land lottery, by grant from the US or the State of MS, or what. Do the county Deed books cover these early transactions? Assuming that Alexander Penny had land, I want to learn when he got it and when he sold it.
