Hi Anne, Thanks for your posting. I believe that this information will be very useful in my Barnes/Robbins research. Please consider posting other information from the Noxubee Co. deed books - I'd certainly appreciate it! Medrith Barnes Collins
Last year, I ordered some Noxubee Co. films from the FHC. I noticed the messages lately on the Barnes and Robbins family, and thought I should post this bit that I found in case it would be of use. I was trying to figure out if any of the BRIDGES / BRIDGERS families in Noxubee Co. were related to my Mary BRIDGERS who md. Ahijah ATKINSON in Franklin Co.,NC in 1824 and then moved to Noxubee Co. MS and finally to AR. Here's the piece of information that I found that may be of interest to Barnes or Robbins researchers... ================ >From Noxubee Co. MS Court Minutes vol. A (1834-1870) 4 Jan 1847 pg. 504 Ordered that the return of R.B. BRIDGES , administrator of the estate of Obedience BARNES , dec'd. be and the same is hereby received and ordered to be recorded. pg. 505 In the matter of the sale of the real estate of John W. BARNES dec'd., on reading and filing the petition of Roddric B. BRIDGES, administrator of the goods and chattels of John W. BARNES dec'd., and to the exhibits thereto annexed and also one of the heirs and distributees in right of his wife and this day prayed for a sale of the real estate of said dec'd. , the said R.B. BRIDGES among other things representing that the personal estate of said decedent is insufficient to pay the debts outstanding against said estate and it being represented to the court therein that Jane, Mary, Richard and John BRIDGES the children of the petitioner and theheirs at law of said John W. BARNES dec'd in right of their dec'd mother, Martha BRIDGES, formerly Martha BARNES, legatees of the said John W. BARNES, dec'd. Joseph and William ROBBINS, children of Jordon ROBBINS, heirs of said decedent in and of their dec'd. mother Eliza ROBBINS, wife of Jordon ROBBINS formerly Eliza BARNES are minors and thereby incapable of personally representing their interest in this application. It is therefore ordered by the court that Charles G. BARNES be appointed guardian of ad littim? of said Jane, Mary, Richard and John BRIDGES and William ROBBINS to take care of and protect their itnerest in this proceeding and it is further ordered that they as well as the said Wilie D. ROBBINS and his wife Elizabeth, John B. ROBBINS and his wife Nancy, Mary Ann BARNES and Jordon ROBBINS guardian of his minor children and all other persons itnerested in said land of said John W. BARNES dec'd be and to be and appear before this court on the first Monday of March Next, AD 1847 then and there to answer said petition and that the same be permitted 30 days in the Independent and that hte same --? forth ----? and show cause if they can why an order and decree shall not be made to sell the land in said petition named for the purpose of paying the debts of the said dec'd. and that said petitioner as to all other matters do stand continued until the next March Term of this court ---- ============== Hope this is helpful...I do have more information from these minutes and some from the deed books that I can send to the list if there is interest. Most are on my families, but there are other names... Anne mwise@prodigy.net

Posted on: Noxubee County Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/Noxubee/10356 Surname: Yoe, Tubb, McGraw, Chambers, Thomas ------------------------- Ross, Thanks so much for all of the information. I will compare this to what I have and fill in the new information you've sent. Yes, I am a descendant of Annie Calmes McGraw Thomas (Elizabeth Yoe was her grandmother). Annie McGraw was my maternal great grandmother. I thought you might be interested in a few pieces of information I have on the Yoes and McGraw/Thomas line. I have an excerpt from the W.P.A. History of Noxubee County 1936-1939 in which Elizabeth Yoe McGraw (Rhodeham's daughter) discusses life in Noxubee. Here is the excerpt: "My grandfather, Elisha Tubb, came to Gholson from Eutaw, Ala. in 1833 and lived about three miles from Gholson. There were nine children in my family [think she is referring to Cemantha Tubb's siblings] and my mother said that many times they were frightened by howls of wolves and by Indians who were numerous in these parts. The Indians worked for my grandfather and the chiefs children went to [?] with his children." "I was born in this house which was built by my father, Rhodeham Yoe. There were three private schools conducted by Lisha Henry, Jim Jackson and Searchler. I attended one of these and then went to Zebb Gathright's Female College which was also in Gholson. There was also a dancing school in the Masonic Hall building, but my father was very strict, he would not allow me to dance. If the boys stayed later than 10 o'clock my father would rap on the floor with his cane." Below is part of the obituary for Elizabeth Yoe McGraw: Mrs. Lizzie Yoe McGraw "Mrs. McGraw was in her eighty-fourth year, and had lived her entire life, save a few years of her early married life in Wills Point, Texas, in Gholson where she died on Tuesday night following a few weeks serious illness. She received her education at Bardstown Kentucky School for Girls. She was the daughter of the late Rhodeham and Cemantha Tubb Yoe, and one of the two children who survived them. The other being Dr. Richard Yoe of Louisville, Kentucky. She was the mother of one son and three daughters. Mrs. McGraw was a good christian woman, and a loyal member of the Baptist church. She was a woman possessed of a cheerful, lovely disposition and a loyal friend and neighbor, and no higher praise can be accorded anyone." Following is information about the Yoe Family as given by Dr. Richard Yoe (Rhodeham's son): "The Yoe family originated in Scotland. First known of them about the year 925. The family in this country originated from three brothers coming from Devonshire, England about 1645, locating in Maryland." "Grandfather's father married the second time and Grandfather couldn't agree with his stepmother so he ran away from home and went to East Pennsylvania, near Rogersville. His name was Perry (Peregrine). Father was born Sept. 20, 1815 and went to Mississippi in 1837 (22 years old) and married Cemantha Tubb, daughter of Elisha Tubb." Following is the information on my line, which is Rhodeham Yoe/Cemantha Tubb - Elizabeth Yoe. B. Elizabeth Yoe aka "Lizzie"(b. 5/29/1853 or 1854;d. 3/9/1937) married DeWitt Clinton McGraw (b. 10/1/1847; d. 4/16/1907) Note: DeWitt was the bookkeeper in Rhodeham Yoe's store in Noxubee. That is how he and Elizabeth Yoe met. Children of DeWitt and Elizabeth: 1.Sinah Cemantha aka "Mantie" (b. 9/20/1877 in Wills Point, TX; d.3/27/1945. Married Dr. Daniel Naylor Garner. 2.Mamie Ella (b. 7/7/1875; d.12/15/1958)Married Dr. James J. Whittle. He was a dentist. Both are buried in Gholson Cem. in Noxubee. 3.Annie Calmes (b. 12/29/1879;d. 1962) Married Charles Murrah Thomas II on 11/12/1906 in West Point, MS. (Charles Murrah Thomas II was the son of Charles Murrah Thomas and Rachel La Dosca Chambers of Noxubee County.) 4. Rhodeham Edmondson (b. 8/18/1882; d. 12/16/1951. Married Mary Abby Ford.
