    1. [MSNOXUBE] William French & Catherine Grace

    1. Re: [MSNOXUBE] Mohegan Cemetary
    2. Hello Is this the same cemetery on Mohegan Rd on the Anderson Place? Only part of the cemetery was cleared for the a family reunion. The cemetery is bigger than what you can reach on Mohegan Rd. My father told me Mohegan Road used to go all the way to what now Mahoner Rd. Most of the Mohegan Road is covered by woods. There are many buried in this cemetery that can't be reach due to woods etc.

    1. [MSNOXUBE] Blackwells & LaGrones of Noxubee County Area
    2. G.F. Taylor
    3. I'm presently beginning to look at notes left by a great aunt, Leona May Card Watson, re her mother's families, which resided in or in the vicinity of Noxubee County. Leona's mother was Sarah Alice Blackwell (1870-1941); Sarah Alice's parents were Johnathan Warren Blackwell (d. about 1876) and Nancy Jane LaGrone (d. about 1910.) I am interested in both families, but of the two I have more re the Blackwells. According to Leona Card Watson's notes, the family arose from two Virginia-born brothers, Johnathan Warren Blackwell and Wiley Blackwell. Wiley Blackwell married a Bettie LaGrone, but I have no further information re him or his descendents. Johnathan is said to have fought in the Civil War alongside Elias Johnson Card (also of Noxubee County); he was the husband of Nancy Jane LaGrone and had the following children. Sarah Alice Blackwell (m. Thomas Johnson Card; I know this particular line of descent, for it is my own and I would be glad to share with any one else who is interested) Willie Josephine Blackwell (m 1st to ? Placeo; m. 2nd to John Moon) Maggie Hill Blackwell (m Charles Murphy) John Lee Blackwell (m. Hannah Harriet Herring; daughter, Gladys Blackwell; believed to have moved to Oklahoma City, OK) Charles Edmund "Ed" Blackwell (m. Edna Echols; m. Josephine LaGrone) Addie Blackwell Nancy Blackwell If any one in the e-mail ring knows anything more of these families I would be glad to hear it!

    1. [MSNOXUBE] Re: WILLIAMS & HUNTER, NOXUBEE COUNTY
    2. Hunter Williams was my step grandfather. He married Willie Cash, widow of James R. Lindley. Hunter Williams had no children. Minnie Williams never married and I didn't think there were any descendants of the other siblings but I really don't know much about the family. Linda Jensen

    2. Beth Zimmer
    3. I don't know if this is really important, but at the FLC that I frequent, the charge for a reel is $3.25 but we can keep the reel for six weeks and then renew the reel for another six weeks for $3.25. The third time that one pays the $3.25, the reel remains on-site which is nice when you discover a "new" ancestor who lived in the county at that time period. Beth

    1. [MSNOXUBE] Index to deeds
    2. Marleen Sue Van Horne
    3. Doris and anyone else interested in deeds, If you look at the list I sent, you will notice the first two entries say general index. My approach when doing deeds is to send for the index that applies to the surnames I am researching, then only order those rolls of film that are identified in the index. The film can be ordered though your local Family History Center, from the Library in Salt Lake City. I think it is $3.80 per roll and you can keep them for 3 weeks. For those of you who are new to the resources of the Family History Library, I suggest you visit their website at www.familysearch.com. Click on .Library and then . Catalog. My advice is to get very familiar with this tool. There are four copies of the Library catlalog, the one online, the one on CD, the one in the Family History Centers, and the one on the inhouse computers at the library. I just checked the online catalog, and it did not have any deeds after 1886 listed for Kemper County. Now, I know from my find in May at the library, that there are microfilms of deeds after 1886, and those films are kept in the VAULT. I make the assumption that the same applies to later films for Noxubee County. I think the e-mail address is fhl@ldschurch.org. Try that and ask them about the later deed books, and what is available for Noxubee County, and what might be in the VAULT. You can request vault films at a FHC, I have done it. They might question whether the film will be sent, but make them do it for just one film to test. For the last two days, when trying to get to Noxubee and Kemper Counties to the Land and Property, my browser died several times. I have never had this happen before, and I am a heavy user of the library catalog. I do not know if it is their problem or mine, but be warned. Good Luck, Marleen

    3. Thanks to Marlene, we now know there are indeed deed films at the LDS...this is what I just rec'd from her: Here is the list of microfilm for deeds for Noxubee County: General index, v. 1-3 1834-1878 FHL US/CAN Film 901677 General index, v. 4-5 1879-1885 FHL US/CAN Film 901678 Deed records, v. A 1834-1838 FHL US/CAN Film 901679 Deed records, v. B 1838-1840 FHL US/CAN Film 901680 Deed records, v. C 1839-1840 FHL US/CAN Film 901681 Deed records, v. I have a whole bunch of deeds for Kemper County that I want to look up, but the reels of microfilm are not in the catalog. On the last day I was in Salt Lake City, in May, I discovered that all the deed books I had been looking for had been microfilmed and were indeed in the library. The problem was/is that these films are so seldom used, they are kept in the VAULT. There was no time for me to request them, so I had to leave without getting the copies I need. Next time I go to SLC, I will request the films ahead of time and they will be waiting for me when I get there. I suggest you write to the Library and asked about microfilms of deed books for after 1886. They are probably in the vault too, and can be ordered, you just have to know what to ask for. Marleen

    1. [MSNOXUBE] Re: Greers in Noxubee Co., Ms.
    2. E. Annette Rose
    3. Doris, the Historical Society of Noxubee county, Ms published a book: Abstracts of Wills of Noxubee co., Ms 1834 - 1910. There were no GREER wills. Entries with the surname of Greer appear, however no good solid info. on the GREER family appears except on later persons, i.e., women who married into the family's family. (The one GREER will belongs to a family group which came into Noxubee from Ireland.) Access to the deed books have not been available outside of the courthouse, to my knowledge. I have attempted to find any microfilmed copies of one, and thru LDS even, I haven't gotten my hands on any deed books. There are some records off the Internet on early land, with only the John H Greer showing up, not Abraham nor Robert. It may be that it was John H Greer who did all the land purchasing, acting as agent, for our families. If we can get to the tax records, we may find some information. Abraham was the eldest, as I have it, and it was his son, John H., who did the initial purchasing? One record, as I remember, shows that John Haynes Greer (note that it is not John Henry Greer) purchased either from or thru Joel Haynes. These would be those earliest land records on the BLM site. If you know where Abraham GREER is buried, maybe we can find where his sister, Lucy, was buried? I have heard that Lucy died in GA., another side of my family says she is buried on the Hudson plantation in Shuqualak, Ms., which is land her son, John Hudson would have purchased 1838.......I have not found any record of Lucy in Ms. Upon the death of her husband, Frederick, no mention of Lucy in his probate records. Here's hoping things get better in this search for records of the GREER family. God Bless, ear

    3. Does anyone have the mailing address to order wills and the price of same in Noxubee Co., Ms. Also is there a look up for a Will for Abraham GREER, died after 1840 and before 1850. Also one for Robert GREER that could have died in the Civil War about 1863/64. I think he enlisted about 1861 and its possible he made a will before he left for duty. Thank you, Doris Irons greer caldor@neto.com
