    3. Theresa, Many of Newton Co. records were destroyed by several courthouse fires, so there are few marriage records prior to 1880s. That said, I didn't find a James West but did see this marriage. Perhaps they are related? J. M. 2. Charles, The book is Newton County, Mississippi Marriage Records, 1872-1952. It was compiled and edited by William Harold Graham, Ed.D. I think it is listed on the Newton County website. Wanda

    3. No, they aren't the only records available. At the state archives in Mississippi, there is a set of about 140 rolls of microfilm called the Soundex to Mississippi Marriages Prior to 1926. This set of film contains information on all Mississippi counties, some of it dating back to the early 1800s. It is the only source of old marriage records for some counties, such as Jasper county, whose courthouses have burned, etc. There are thousands and thousands of records on these film. Each card that was microfilmed contained the names of the groom and bride (sorry, but they're only soundexed by the groom's surname, making it impossible to search for the bride unless you know who she married), the date of the marriage, the county in which they were married, and in most cases, the original book and page number of the actual license. Some of the cards even tell you who performed the ceremony and what his position was (i.e., Justice of the Peace, Minister of the Gospel, etc.). You can access these microfilm through your local library via the interlibrary loan system. Again, they are soundexed by the groom's surname. There are even separate rolls of film recording black marriages, making this a valuable tool for African American researchers. Good luck in your search. 3. Thank you so much for the information you found on the Ratheal/Overstreet and Ratheal/Tisdale marriages. Mollie E. and Minnie Lee Ratheal are my g-aunts. They are the elder children of Sara Ann Elizabeth Williams and W. Johnas Ratheal. Do you know if it is possible to obtain a copy of the pages of the marriage book showing the marriages? And are these recordings of the date of issuance of a marriage license or the actual recording of the date of marriage? Am thrilled to receive your information. Again, thank you very much. Charles >

    3. Thank you Wanda for looking up the marriage for me. Is the marriage book in which you looked the only records on early marriages? I know it is difficult to find records during the Civil War Period for much was burned. However, on occasion some of the records were salvaged. Thank you again for your time. I appreciate your help very much. Charles

    3. I did not find the marriage record you requested. Because of Court House fires and other disasters, Newton County Marriage Records are extant from 1872. But I did find these who may be related: Rathael, Mollie to R. L. Overstreet 12/11/1892; Book 3, Page 322 Rathael, M. L. to C. W. Tisdale (groom) 11/19/1893, Book 3, Page 398.
