Take that Township and Range location next door, and you can find the exact location of the land. I did, and it gives you a feeling you won't be able to put in words, to stand and look at the site. Even if a modern day building is standing on it today, as in my case. Also check with the BLM GLO land patent records at _http://www.glorecords.blm.gov_ (http://www.glorecords.blm.gov) This shows the original sale of the land from the US Gov to the individual, Land sales after that, from individual to individual, were kept at the county. Sometimes we can't see through the fog and all it takes is another person to take a look and see a different avenue to pursue. You are just wonderful, thank you so much for all of your help! I went on to search for Sarah Ann Elizabeth Williams in the 1870 census and found her married to Walter Rathiel (sp). At the time of the census, they had been married only 6 months. Walter and Sarah had twelve children in Newton, one dying as an infant, My grandmother, Edna Dollie was their last child. the entire family moved to Leroy, TX near Waco in 1893 or 1894 where Walter & his daughter, Jenie died of typhoid fever in 1895. In 1901 the family moved to Granite, OK and about ten years later moved, again, to Crosby Co, TX where the set down their roots. Sarah's brother, William Marshall, married Celesta Ladora Jurdon (1st wife) in 1865 and their first chid was born in Clarksville, TX in 1868. They had 5 children. Celesta died in 1885. I think this is Archibald P Monroe's son. Archibald was born in 1813/4 NC, right after my James J Monroe, and could have been related, possibly a brother as they are so close to the same age. I have gone to MS and stood over his grave in the Decatur Cemetery, and there are several unmarked graves beside his family. Perhaps this is where my James J is, and if so, we will never know. I agree with you it is wise to check every possibility, due to the transcription errors. My philosophy is, every time you can positively eliminate a name, that is a valuable clue also. Thanks again, Fran

    3. Charles, this looks like your family on the 1870 census, Newton County, MS, Township 7, Range 11, Page 469, Family 2/2. If the cemetery was established in 1872, then that will mean my ancestor who died in 1867 is not there, marker or not. I have always wondered if his dying a widower in 1867 so close to the end of the Civil War, leaving his 24 yr old daughter to take the responsibility of her 12 younger siblings, would not allow any funds for a marker. I was hoping his being a Mason, he would have had a Masonic funeral. Now, on to finding the "old cemetery 3 miles south of Union." Fran Bolton

    1. Masonic Cemetery In Newton Co?? Cemetery 3 mi S of Union?
    2. Is there Masonic Cemetery in the city of Newton, in Newton Co.? If so, is it listed in the cemetery books? Was it in existence when my ancestor, a member of the Evergreen Lodge in Decatur, died in 1867? I recently read a reference to a Masonic cemetery in the city of Newton. Several years ago, I visited the Evergreen Lodge in Decatur during a garage sale they were holding, and spoke with George Hays about my frustration of not finding my ancestor's grave in the area. My ancestor, James J. Monroe, b. 1812 NC, was one of the early settlers of Newton Co, in Union. He was a Lawyer, State Representative, and member of the Evergreen Lodge. I asked George Hays if there was a Masonic Cemetery nearby, and he said there was not. He confirmed this with several members at the sale. I also recently acquired a copy of an old handwritten note, pertaining to James J. Monroe: "I believe Papa'a home was about 1 mile south of Union. About 3 miles south of town is a real old cemetery which I believe is where Grandpa Monroe is buried" Can anyone identify this cemetery from this description? 3. Emma Lou, I sure would like to make it fit as the dates are in the ballpark! Perhaps if I contacted the Decatur Cemetery, they would have some record of Mary Ann and her relatives. I really need to connect to her children to be certain. Should you have a listing for Decatur Cemetery, I would appreciate having it. One other consideration. My 2nd cousin once removed who lives near Dallas told me that Mary Ann Smith was married to Alonso Williams and that his mother visited the gravesite. Unfortunately, his mother has passed on and he did not have the pictures his mother took of the gravesite nor know the name of the cemetery! This differs from the family historian's record stating Andrew Williams. Please check your cemetery book to see if you have an Alonso Williams listed. Thank you, again, for all of your help. It has been great! Sarah was b. 12/29/1850 and d. 1/11/1889. There is also another marriage for Thomas: Thomas Noris Townsend (same birth and death dates) to Susan Ella Tucker. License dated 12/29/1894.
