RootsWeb Review: RootsWeb's Weekly E-zine 8 December 2004, Vol. 7, No. 49, Circulation: 816,285+ (c) 1998-2004 RootsWeb.com, Inc. http://www.rootsweb.com/ * * * Editor: Myra Vanderpool Gormley, Certified Genealogist Editor-RWR@rootsweb.com Certification: http://www.bcgcertification.org/certification/ * * * New Bill Will Close Records to Genealogists HR10, which was mentioned in the 13 October issue of RootsWeb Review, has passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now part of S.2845. The amendments suggested by David Rencher in his letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman J. Dennis Hastert, were NOT incorporated into this legislation. Thus, the terms of HR10 will now be considered by the Senate, as part of S.2845. If S.2845 becomes law, as now written, family historians will face some real challenges in attempts to obtain birth records, even on long- deceased individuals. Specifically, what genealogists need to do is suggest to their lawmakers the addition of Sec. 3061(b)(1)(A)(iii) that would read: "who is alive on the date that access to their birth certificate is requested." This addition would clarify that the legislation (soon to be law) applies ONLY to birth certificates of CURRENTLY LIVING PERSONS. If you do not know your U.S. Senator's e-mail address, you can find it at http://www.senate.gov/ This bill can be found online at http://thomas.loc.gov/ Put in S.2845 (in the bill number window) and then select item No. 3; and go to Subtitle B--Identity Management Security; Chapter 2--Improved Security for Birth Certificates. I am trying to locate a cousin. I have very little information. Her name is Rachel Parkerson. I was told she was living in Decatur, Ms. when she died. I do not know who she married. She had 2 girls and some grandchildren. Her mother was Mable Hodges Parkerson Mangum. I do not know if her mom and stepdad Thomas Tyndal Mangum lived in Decatur, Ms. or not. I know this is a shot in the dark but would appreciate any information. Thanks. Faye Johnston
Hi, all! Mary E.S. Williams married John T. Hunter. The Hunters owned a hotel in Newton. Census records show that the hotel was in their ownership from 1910 through 1930 according to the US Census. Is anyone aware of the identity of this hotel? Is it possible to obtain a Newton City Directory for this time period which might disclose the hotel's name? Any help would be appreciated. Charles
I just want to warn everybody so they won't be as foolish as I have been. When I get a credit card bill, I just pay it. I don't pour over it line by line. No more. Because of that, I didn't realize that I was being billed every month for $14.95 from One Great Family. They're a genealogy website. I was one of the charter members, so my access was supposed to be "free." Not so. They've been billing me all this time, even though I have not even looked at the website since I first signed on... about five years ago. Now they refuse any refund and were not very nice when responding to my query. They used a "backdoor" approach to this whole thing. I'm angry about it, but I'm also angry at myself for not being more careful. I just want to warn everybody else out there not to make the same mistake I did. From now on, I am looking at EVERY WORD on my credit card bills!!!!
Could anyone tell me who the daughter of Agnes Graham and Henry Grady Rush was? They had 2 daughters, one Racheal, married Richard Sorey, the other one was Mary Day, I have no information on her, and know that she moved west. I do not even have the date of her birth, but there are some people who remember her, but cannot give me anymore. Thanks for any information. Carolyn James Lane
Can anyone shed any light for me on John R. Cox in the 1870 Census, in Newton County. He was my 3G grandfather and I have not been able to find any records on his parents. He was born in approximately 1802-1804 (according to various census records). He is listed as either born in South Carolina or Georgia, with South Carolina being slightly more likely. He was a Reverend. One of my relatives has a document in her possession that states that he was ordained a deacon in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South by Bishop Robert Paine at the Mississippi Conference at Macon (Noxubee?), Mississippi on 27 November, 1858. He is listed in later years as Rev. John R. Cox, the R. apparently standing for Richard. He left South Carolina, in his words, an orphan, in the company of his uncle and family. The uncle's name was John D. Wylie (possibly Wynn or Wyatt, but evidence is convincing that it was Wylie). They traveled to Huntsville, Alabama in 1818. In 1824, he moved to Tuscaloosa area of Alabama and in 1827 married Eliza Eads (whose last name has been spelled at least four different ways). Washington Ware Cox and Margaret Cox, his last two children are still living with him in 1870. The parents then went on to Texas and Washington Ware stayed behind. He married Julia Ann Hopkins, had my great grandfather James O. Cox, who had my grandfather James O. Cox (Little Jimmy) who lived in Brandon and Hattiesburg, and then my dad, James O. Cox (Jim) who lived in Brandon and Hattiesburg and now resides in California. I would be extremely grateful for any information regarding John R. Cox. Greg Cox

Charles, Thank you for this detailed information. Very interesting. I have Clarks and Jones in my Williams line also. I have two letters from Eunice Stewart Goddard written to my Mother in the 1980s. Mrs. Stoddard was a granddaughter of Martha Jane Williams and Little Page Sims (thus a great granddaughter of Anderson Williams). I can scan these and send to you directly if you would like them. She mentions an obituary for "Aunt Mary Williams Hunter." Catherine: Thank you for posting the Anderson Williams descendants. The information corroborates much of what I have. Sure am glad to get your history for it will be a great help in sourcing and further research. Below is what I have on the Anderson Williams line. Most of the information is sourced to a written history maintained by Inez Morgan Smith, the dau of Sophie Cornelia Ratheal Morgan. It appears to substantiate the information that you previously posted. In another email, I will post a picture that I have of Susan Roberta Williams with her daughter, grand daughter, and g-grandson. The picture was published in the Altus, OK newspaper on 8/3/1939. Thanks again and best wishes in your search. Amma and Charles, The Mary Ann that Emma wrote about was Mary Ann Smith. She was born in GA. Her spouse, Anderson Williams, was born in Wilkinson Co., GA. I do not have parents for either of them. The couple had six children that I know of, including a daughter Sally who married an unknown Rathel. This information came from a direct descendent. Hope this helps. Hi Charles, Thank you for the info on your Williams, but I don't think they connect to mine. My Williams (Stephen C. Williams) was born in SC ca. 1808. He married in Tuscaloosa Co., AL and was in Newton Co. by the late 1830s. I continue to search for his ancestors, so I will certainly let you know if I find anything on your folks. My father took the Williams DNA test this year, but he had no matches with any Williams tested thus far!
