I consider myself a history NUT but certainly not a history BUFF. My oldest son is history major.....and I usually bombard him with questions. I know he did his thesis on the Civil War but it was on a particular person, Pemberton, I believe. Anyway, I was born and raised in Lincoln County, MS and Newton County seemed so far away, I'm just not familiar with it at all. I can't get enough of history these days. Do you read? I've been reading John Jakes books. Another thing, I lived close to Natchez and Vicksburg so all my Mississippi Civil War tid bits were mostly about those areas. Email me anytime. I'd love to hear from you. Denise Louisiana via Mississippi

Actually made contact with living family in Germany and Switzerland. I know what you mean about wanting to be detective. I have worked on my own family tree since a child. I started working on the ARTMAN, JACKSON, MOORE, MORGAN family when I was married to my first husband. We since divorced, 1999, but I still want to do this for my children. I cannot and will not give up on finding this family. I still want to know who Nancy Ellen's father was.

I read about the Civil War (1861-67) and it's effect on Newton Co, and learned the Northern troops destroyed much of Decatur. That gave me a re-newed interest in the movie "Gone With the Wind", when I learned how my ancestors had to experience and suffer that war and it's aftermath. Most of my Monroes left Newton Co shortly after the war, and ended up here in TX, where I live. Fran

Since posting that query this morning, I've spent the day searching for this information. I too, found Elisabeth's household in Newton County. It didn't even occur to me that the father could have been killed in the Civil War. Of course, I was wondering what happened to him. I should look next for the Civil War Records and or a Pension for Elisabeth. Once again, thank you much. Denise Louisiana via Mississippi

This might mean her father was killed in the Civil War, as MS suffered greatly from battles on it's soil. Checking the Newton Co 1860 census, I did not find a household with mother Elizabeth and the same children as those on the 1870. I can email you a copy of the actual census page, or list the siblings. Fran Bolton

    3. I found what looks like your Virginia in 1870 Campbell Co. TN District 14 P.O. Jackboro, TN in the household of James COOPER. She is listed as Vergina Young age 29, b. TN. Husband, I presume-J.C. Young age 44, b. KY. One child-Lucinda, (Cynthia?) age 1, b. TN. Also listed Martha HUTSON age 32, with a child-James Hutson age 1 b. TN. (possibly Vergina's sister?) I have Young's in Clarke, Newton, Wayne, Co. MS and other's, but none of the names match these. I'm also interested in the relationship of J.C. Young or wife Vergina, to James Cooper, as James is also an ancestor of my husbands - James father is supposedly Peter Cooper, born in ca1772 SC; wife Rebecca unknown, b. in ca1800 VA. Thanks, Gaylynn Y. Cooper

    3. Thanks, but I think her brother is Daniel Cooper Tyler wife Feriby Brister of Copiah Co 1850 census, and moves with her to Columbia Co., AR; then he goes to Van Zandt Co., TX. So, Priscilla Tyler b. 1820, needs Mr. Tyler b. SC say 1790-1805, and wife Miss_____Cooper b. ca 1790-1805 GA. I appreciate your trying to help. Other brothers, John and Elisha. Someone else found an Elisha Taylor in Marengo Co, AL m. Priscilla Forster 1821 and in the Newton Co census 1850, her son by the previous marriage is Drury Foster b. 1816 AL, living next door, etc. So, that lets them out. Many of my other relatives were from Pontotoc Co; like Folsom, Rivers, Ford, Farr, some there some in Marshall Co. I have most of their lines further back. Farr came from Fairfax Co., VA via AL; Folsom from GA; Rivers back to Lt. James Rivers up east, not so sure on William Ford line.
