    1. Re: [MSNESHOB] McKees of Neshoba Co., MS early 1800's

    3. This is great. I'm collecting all this "dialogue" from everyone and hope to sort through all of it this weekend. Most of my research started from a gift in 1985, when I was 16 years old from my cousin Dr. Harvey Cannon, Jr, who also put a copy of his work at teh Neshoba Library. Anyway, he asked me and others to double check and try to build on this. It's taken me a while to learn about the documentation. I went to get a history degree, mostly to learn about original research, then several years passed where I didn't do a lot. Now I am finding that much of the information that is passed around is incomplete or made from suppositions and so forth. It is very interesting how close it all is even with so many people involved! Anyway, I'm especially interested in your sources. That is wonderful. I will do my best to give sources wehre I have them on my next post. I live in Arizona now and have been here about 4 years. Right before I moved here I spent a week in Tennessee and Mississippi wandering through cemeteries. I think I might actually have a few photos of some of these folks' gravestones we've been discussing. Many of them I didn't discover until after that trip but I did get an awesome book while in Philadelphia and I'd be happy to look up any gravestone info if you want me to. It's a collection of dates, names, of gravestones in Neshoba County through 1996. I am now rambling so will quit. Thanks again for sharing. Will post some more stuff this weekend. This is great how so many people have gotten involved inthis line of queries. J. Russell suehoward wrote: >Julie, isn't this fun?!! 3. I have pictures of all of the Clark tombstones in Black Jack Cemetery if you would like me to e-mail them to you. A lady by the name of Lisa Duncan, I believe, who evidently lives close by and who goes over to that cemetery quite frequently, sent them to me. Let me know. By the way, Julie or Gladys, do either one of you live in Mississippi, most especially in Neshoba County, by any chance? Also, what about Johnson ancestors or relatives? I was, after all, a Johnson before I was a Howard, thanks to my Clark grandmother, Louisa Frances (Fanny) Clark, marrying John Randel Johnson. 3. Julie, isn't this fun?!! I LOVE GENEALOGY, and this is one reason why - meeting new "cousins"! Well, let me see now. Most of my information came from a book that was written by a "fairly" close cousin to myself - Woodrow Wilson Clark, Jr. The book is called "The Clark Family, York County, SC, Lincoln County, TN, and Neshoba County, Mississippi. I had a free-lance genealogist by the name of Jean Fountain who actually lives in York Co., South Carolina do research for me, and she's the one who found that book in the library there. Since that time, I have been in touch with a number of Clark descendants - one being a daughter of Woodrow Wilson Clark, Jr. Her name is Dr. Susan Clark Slaymaker, who is a professor of geology (not genealogy) out at a university in California. She has done extensive research on the Clarks and Cowans. First of all, though, let me correct you on something. John Clark was definitely born in 1790 in York County, South Carolina - not in Tennessee. Elizabeth McKee Clark was born in 1798 in either York or Chester Co., SC. They married in 1814 and moved to Lincoln County, TN sometime before 1820 - I think maybe as early as 1815. Evidence of this is: a family bible in the possession of E. S. Clark's descendants, which may include sheets from a bible owned by John, states that John and Elizabeth's oldest son, Henry, was born in Lincoln Co. in 1815. Also along for the trip were John Clark's parents - James Clark, born in 1764 (probably in Anson/Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina) and Mary Cowan, born in 1768 in Anson/Mecklenburg Co., NC. I can give you more on James and Mary if you want -just let me know. John Clark and Elizabeth McKee were married on July 14, 1814 (now I have my papers in front of me). Here are their children: Henry Clark, born April 29, 1815, Lincoln Co., TN - Married Polly Gray on Feb. 28, 1836. He died April ? 1878 Nancy Clark, born Dec. 17, 1816, Lincoln Co., TN - Married Alexander Beard, Jr. 1/15/1838. Death ? James Clark, born Dec. 3, 1818, Lincoln Co., TN - Married Susan Williams on March 20, 1840. Death Joseph Clark, born in October, 1820, Lincoln Co., TN - Married Abigail Earnest on Dec. 25, 1843 in Neshoba Co. Died Robert Clark, born Dec. 28, 1822, Lincoln Co., TN - Married ? Williams on Feb. 25, 1842. Death ? John H. Clark, born Dec. 20, 1825, Lincoln Co., TN - Never married? - Died 1852/53 William Clark, born Feb. 18, 1827, Lincoln Co., TN - Married ? Tucker Aug. 15, 1847. Death? Thomas N. Clark, born March 22, 1829, Lincoln Co., TN - Married Elizabeth Myers on Sept. 23, 1847 in Lincoln Co., TN - I think they may have remained in Lincoln Co.? Hugh Clark, born Feb. 20, 1831, Lincoln Co., TN - Married Lucy Allen in 1851; Died February 1854 Sarah Elizabeth Clark, born July 20, 1833, Lincoln Co., TN - Married William Legg Sept. 20, 1853 Ebenezer Samuel (Sam) Clark - MY GREAT GRANDFATHER, born Sept. 20, 1835, Lincoln Co., TN - Married Elizabeth Camilla Winfield - MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER, on Sept. 21, 1863; after Elizabeth Camilla's death, Sam then married a Mary Marshall - had no children by her. Sam Clark died on May 4, 1915, Neshoba Co., MS So 11 children is the correct number for John and Elizabeth (McKee) Clark. Footnote: In "Marriages in Lincoln Co., TN, page 149, it says "John Clark and Eliza C. Robertson were married 9 Sept. 1847 (could have been John H. Clark - one of the above-mentioned children of John and Elizabeth This is what I have on Joseph Clark (who married Abigail Earnest or Ernest). He was born in Tennessee (Evidence: on the 1860 Neshoba Co. census, he so stated), probably in Lincoln County. He went to Neshoba Co., MS with his mother prior to 1840 (Evidence: his mother - Elizabeth McKee Clark - is listed on the 1840 Neshoba Co. census, and he married in 1843 in Neshoba Co.) The State Census of 1845 lists Joseph Clark with 1 male and 2 females. Neshoba Co., MS census records list Joseph's hosuehold as follows: 1850 (not given in the info I have); 1860 - Joseph Clark, 39, Abigail, 25 (?), John T., 15, William P., 13, Theodore W., 9, Josephine A., 7, Nancy E., 6 and Mary A., 1 1870 census shows Abigail Clark, 43, Andrew J., 12; Sarah A, 8; and Joseph A., 7. In 1858, Joseph Clark received an original land grant of 39 acres of federal land just north of what is now Black Jack Baptist Church, and in 1860, Joseph received an original grant of 40 acres of federal land in Section 11, Township 11, Range 10. Numerous land transactions involving Joseph are recorded in the Neshoba Co. Courthouse. He built his house on a bluff overlooking Pearl River Swamp, about 2 miles north of Black Jack Baptist Church. Two of his sons acquired land in this area - George Washington (Wash) I'M NOT SURE WHO THIS GEORGE WASHINGTON PERSON IS UNLESS HE IS THE SAME PERSON AS THE THEODORE W. CLARK and Joseph Albert (Albert). A daughter of Wash, Emma, married Leroy Barrett and they built one of the largest plantations just across the Pearl River from the Joseph Clark farm. REMEMBER, THIS IS ALL INFORMATION FROM THAT BOOK I TOLD YOU ABOUT BY WOODROW WILSON CLARK, JR. Joseph is listed as a private in A. H. Franklin's Company D, Neshoba County Rifles, 11th Regiment, Mississippi Volunteers, in April 1861, during the Civil War. Joseph died between 1863 and 1870 (Evidence: Black Jack Baptist Cemetery Record gives birth date of youngest son of Joseph as 1863, but Joseph is not on the 1870 Neshoba Co. census. He is buried in Black Jack Cemetery next to Abigail who died in 1887 (Evidence: Cemetery Record). Okay, from the Family Group Sheet on Joseph and Abigail, the following children are listed: 1. John Thomas (Tom Clark, born April 19, 1844, Neshoba Co., MS, married Lucy Jane Savell in 1869, then Sarah Sharpe; died May 21, 1926, Neshoba Co. 2. William P. Clark, born 1847, Neshoba Co., Ms, never married? died in Civil near Chunky, Mississippi 3. Theodore Washington Clark (AH, HERE IS THAT SO-CALLED GEORGE WASHINGTON CLARK - I KNEW THAT WAS A MISTAKE!), born around 1849, Neshoba Co., MS, married Amanda Turner and died June 18, 1896 4. Josephine AA (?) Clark, born around 1851, Neshoba Co. - no other info 5. Nancy E. Clark, born around 1854, same, no other info 6. Mary A. Clark, born around 1859, same, no other info 7. Andrew Jackson Clark, born 1858-60, same, married Haney Savell. 8. Sarah A. Clark, born around 1862, - no other info 9. Joseph Albert Clark, born Nov. 28, 1866 (or 1863, so it says), married Adelade Griffin- says he died Aug. 24, 1953 10."Sis" Clark ? born ? married Bob Dooley - no other info 11.Virginia Clark born ? married Marion Smith - no other info This same Family Group Sheet says Abigail Earnest was born in Alabama January 27, 1829 and died October 25, 1887. That's about it for now. Let me know what you think about all of this. 3. Hi, Thanks for getting back in touch with me. So far, and this is undocumented by me, so take it with a grain of salt, I have Lewis Davis ADKINS' parents as Zaccheus ADKINS (b. 1781 , Sussex, Virginia; d. York City, South Carolina) and Piety Prudence SANSING (b. Nov 1785 probably in Bute co., NC; d. Sep 1879 in Homer, Claiborne parish, Louisiana). Zaccheus' parents were Lewis ADKINS (b. 9 Sep 1742 in Surry, Virginia; d. abt 1810 in York co., SC) and Susannah ____ (b. abt 1740 in Surry co., VA; d. abt 1793). I don't have info on any of their children other than the direct line. As for Benjamin Franklin ADKINS, all I know of him is that he was born about 1829 in Henry co., Georgia. The ADKINS and GRIFFINs came to Mississippi in the same wagon train, I am told, arriving in Neshoba county around 1854. I don't know any more about Benjamin but will be glad to help you search for clues. I'll pass on anything I learn. Yes, Mary Elizabeth ADKINS married James Andrew GRIFFIN, an older brother to my great-grandfather, John Jefferson GRIFFIN. They had 8 children that I know of. Martha Adeline ADKINS married Ira Lewis "L" GRIFFIN, another brother in the GRIFFIN household. They had 11 children that I know of. If you need info on any of their descendants, I will be happy to share what I have. The GRIFFIN boys were sons of Daniel Boone GRIFFIN (b. 19 Mar 1802 in Orangeburg, SC; d. 25 Jan 1884 in Black Jack, Neshoba, MS) and Nancy T. RHODES (b. abt 1804 in GA; d. 5 Feb 1885 in Neshoba co., MS). They were married 26 Feb 1827 in Greene county, Alabama, where they lived for at least 2-3 years before going back to Georgia. I have yet to find out who either of their parents were, but I feel that I am getting close to finding the GRIFFIN line. Some of the puzzle pieces are starting to come together. I think his father may have been either Daniel GRIFFIN or Abraham GRIFFIN of North Carolina, but haven't found proof yet. Anyway, thanks for getting back in touch with me. I'll let you know what I find out about Benjamin and Elizabeth. Debi Griffin Campbell

    1. Re: [MSNESHOB] Message for Howard ADKINS
    2. Debi Cambell: Yes. My line is from Lewis Davis and Catherine Sansing Adkins who came from Georgia in a big wagon train in 1852 and lived for several years in Neshoba and Newton counties. He then left for Louisiana. Several of his children lived for several years in Neshoba, i.e., Benjamin Franlkin, William C., Jefferson Marion, Mary E. (she married J.A. Griffin), and Martha A. (she married Ira Griffin). From Lewis Davis, my line is Benjamin Franklin, John Lewis, John Henry, Tommie. John Henry and Tommie made their home in Good Hope Community (Neshoba County). My family still live there, but I chose West Virginia. For several years I have searched for what happened to my GGGrandfather Benjamin Franklin and (wife) Elizabeth J. Tinsley Adkins after 1860. Any help would be more than greatly appreciated. Howard G. Adkins Ona, WV

    3. I also have a lot of Deweese descendants. See what I mean about the family getting confusing! I show Chatman as Jones, rather than James. My grandma is a Jones also. The Breland (see Ina) family is pretty well known at the time in Neshoba County. There is a lot of info on them. I have especially gotten some good local flavor of the ancestors from Mr Breland's articles in the Neshoba Democrat. He wrote about a lot fo these common ancestors. I have found most on Cannon and DeWeese. I have heard a bit about the train wreck and William. One version has another relative also on the train. ANything about that in your records? Will have to look more closely at your wonderful data later. Thanks for sharing. J. Russell Adkinshg@aol.com wrote: >Gladys Clark: > Saw your note on MSNESHOB and though I would respond. 3. George Earnest died before 1789 in Hanover, VA. He was married to Rose, who died after 1789, in Hanover. I have four children listed for them: John Jacob, Samuel, George M., and William.John Jacob was born abt 1755 in Hanover, died Oct 1834 in Alabama. He married Mary, (abt 1762-Oct 1843). They had 9 children, Martha Ann, Rebecca, Sarah, Charity G., John Robert, Asa, John Jacob Jr, George, and Isham C. Isham C. was born abt 1795 probably in Georgia. He married Elizabeth Steen abt 1814. She was born in Alabama. He died in 1859 in Jackson, MS; she in abt 1874 in Philadelphia, MS. They had eight children, Arraminta D. 3. Interestingly, I only have Joseph and a whole bunch of siblings, names unknown, as children of John and Elizabeth. I am showing 9 children. I don't even know how many girls and how many boys! Joseph and Abigail, I show 9 children also, but I have all their names: John Thomas, William, Theodore W., Josephine A., Nancy E., Mary A.V., Andrew J., Sarah A., Joseph A. John Thomas married Lucy Jane Savell. They had 13 children. John Thomas and I are 1st cousins 5 times removed with common ancestor of Isham C. Earnest and Elizabeth Steen. THere are also a lot of other connections with the Clarks. Later in the early 1900's my grandmother had a bunch of 1st cousins named Clark and they also descend from this family. The Savells also are descendants of my Cannon relatives. It gets a bit confusing but I'm sorting it out. Would be interested in what else you have on the first family, John and Elizabeth--their childrens names! I am sorry I don't have more information on those two individuals. My info matches yours in that Elizabeth died abt 1862 in Neshoba County. I've got John born in Tennessee in 1790. Looks like we've gotten a lot of interest with this tangent of discussion so maybe all of us working together can come up with some good data. J. I can be contacted at yukpa1@outdrs.net or on this message tree.
