I am still searching for a Watkins family who left TN in 1834 bringing with them a 2 year old son William I Watkins, who was born in Fayette Co.,TN. >From Civil war pensions files, his widow stated the family also contained these siblings: Frank, Jesse, and at least one daughter. Frank died in the Civil War, probably some where in Alabama. The Frank and William Watkins were both carpenters, as stated in enlistment papers. I have been trying to find some source, giving me a clue as to the name of William I Watkins father, or information on the family of his brother Jesse, hoping this would give additional clues. The other information I have is from a late 1800's census which William I states his father was born in North Carolina. There unfortunately so many Watkins in NC at the probable time. I have been so fortunate in discovering all of the major lines of my husband's ancestors, but have been stopped at this TN>MS family of Watkins. I just cannot discover William I Watkins' father's name. Any clues would be most gratefully appreciated. God Bless, Beverly Anne Thatcher Smith
Just found Hubert E. PULLIN in the Social Security Death Index. He was born 19 Sep 1907, d. 30 Jan 1998. His last residence was Union, Neshoba, MS. SSN 427-22-7757 was issued in MS before 1951. I'm looking for him in the census records now.... Debi Griffin Campbell
Julie... Thank you SO MUCH for looking up the PULLINs for me! I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I'm living in Michigan now and don't get back down to Mississippi as much as I'd like to and have to rely on the help of others. Thank you for taking the time to help me. Debi Griffin Campbell
Would Boyd Pullin be Hubert E. Just loking thru my books. Also have one called "A Farmers Line" which has Croswell, Cannon mostly. i guess that is all of my Neshoba books...Nope wait...Did you have any civil war soldiers? I have a 1,000 pg book about The 11th MS Infantry Regiment, soldiers mostly in and around Neshoba County, Newton,.... Only Pullen I see is Franklin M. Pullen...any interest? Just give me names and when I have time I'll check for you. Julie PS If you wonder why I am trying to help!... When I first started researching Neshoba County ancestors, I had a huge head start because an older cousin had placed a book there (Cannons info) and then when I started checking more, two gentlemen in Philadelphia were so helpful. They copied info for me. When I went to visit they took me on tours. One turns out to be a 3rd cousin, and the other we keep finding links but haven't cemented it yet. It feels good to help others like I've been helped and it's really fun to find new cousins! Debi Griffin Campbell wrote: >Julie... > >Thank you SO MUCH for looking up the PULLINs for me! I also have a book called Red Clay Hills of Neshoba which has a lot of stuff in it about early settlers. Give me names if you want me to check there also. It has lots of info about my family including Cannon, Tullos, DeWeese (and every variation), Boone, Breland, Fox, Branch, Earnest so if any of those connect, let me know. Thanks, Alton, for sending me your address. I'll send you copies of the pictures I have of the PULLIN/PULLEN siblings (Amanda, Mary Jane, and Jesse, plus Maron Auston and his family). I would definitely like to have the info you have on Maron Auston PULLIN's children. I looked around on the internet some more last night and found the following: Carl Gaston PULLIN, 28 Jan 1900 Herbert E. PULLIN [Is he their son?], b. abt 1907 Maudie PULLIN, b. abt 1908 Dovie PULLIN, b. abt 1916 Sidney PULLIN, b. abt 1919 Rubie PULLIN, b. abt 1922 Are these names correct? Maron Auston's father was George W. RIGDON, b. 21 Apr 1858 in MS. George d. 29 Sep 1940 in Newton co., MS. He married Amanda PULLEN ("Mandy") 23 Jan 1877. Their children are: William Wilson RIGDON, 14 Sep 1880 George W. RIGDON, Jr., 16 Feb 1883 Etta or Ada RIGDON, Apr 1888 Grover A. RIGDON, 17 Nov 1890 Dona "Donnie" RIGDON, Oct 1894 Thomas Marshall RIGDON, 26 May 1897 Bessie RIGDON, Jan 1900 Alice D.? RIGDON, 25 Jun 1903 Amanda's sister Mary Jane was Maron Auston's mother. She was b. 22 Dec 1859 in Scott co., MS; d. 4 Oct 1920 in Mossville, Jasper, MS. My granddaddy and grandma took care of her til she died. Mary Jane was a devout Penetecostal and a strict disciplinarian. She always wore her hair back in a bun, and had a stern look on her face. Of course, knowing my granddaddy and his siblings, I can imagine she HAD to be a strict disciplinarian! ha! My granddaddy was Harmon Rannels GRIFFIN; his wife was Althea Corrine WINDHAM. Amanda and Mary Jane had one other sibling, Jesse Harmon PULLEN, b. Oct 1858 in Scott co., MS. Their parents were (James) Harmon PULLEN (twin) and Elizabeth GARDNER. [I'm starting to think she was actually a GARNER, but haven't documented that yet.] Harmon was b. in 1831 in Hinds co., MS. His twin brother was Hiram Rand PULLIN. Harmon married Elizabeth abt 1857 in MS. He died 9 Jul 1862 at his home in Scott co., MS. He had been injured while fighting in Vicksburg and was sent home. He died a week later. In an interview, daughter Amanda said her parents lived near Lake, MS, at the time he died and he was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Conehatta, MS. Harmon's Civil War records give his death info: "Died Scott county, Miss. July 9, 1862." My great aunt Onie (another child of Mary Jane's) had the PULLEN Family Bible in her possession; I had the chance to hold it and photograph it myself. All of Mary Jane's children were listed in there with their birthdates. Harmon and Elizabeth moved to Newton co., MS, about 1842, then to Scott co. before 1850. They were still in Scott co. in 1860. Harmon PULLEN's father was John PULLEN/PULLIN, b. abt 1798 in GA; d. bef 1860 in Karnes co., TX. He married Mary Ann "Polly" MURRAY on 13 Jun 1813 in Wilkinson co., GA. "Polly" was b. 1794/1795 in GA. Their children were: Cassie Ann, b. abt 1817 Calvin, b. abt 1820 Henry William, b. abt 1825 James, b. abt 1826 Levin J. "Levi", b. abt 1828 Hiram Rand (twin), 1831 (James) Harmon (twin), 1831 Thomas, abt 1832 John PULLIN's father was Henry H. PULLEN Sr., b. 1769 Delaware. He died 1851 in Scott or Newton co., MS. About 1797, he married wife Sarah. They had a whole slew of children: John, b. abt 1798 Ruby, b. abt 1802 Stephen, 1804 Charity, 25 Feb 1806 Edward, 1810 Henry H., 1813 Lloyd, 1815 Martha Matilda, 10 Mar 1815 And another child about 1820. Wiley Anthony, 1823 James, 1826 That's as far back as I have gone. The descendants of Hiram Rand PULLIN have been busy researching and Geraldyne SPENCER has published a book called "Footprints of Hiram Rand PULLIN." If you want, I can get you her address. I believe she's published a couple more books; I need to get in touch with her and get copies of those, too. She did an excellent job documenting and gives details of her documentation, including copies of most of it. Hope this helps! Debi Griffin Campbell

Hi! Wow! Thanks for getting in touch with me! Actually, the Elizabeth I'm searching for is the grandmother of Carl Gaston PULLIN, but I needed the information you sent, too! What were the names of Carl Gaston and Lena Elizabeth's 7 children? Carl's father was Maron Auston PULLEN, son of Mary Jane PULLEN and ... get this... her brother-in-law, George RIGDON. Mary Jane's sister Amanda was married to George at the time. Mary Jane was living with them. One day, while George was plowing out in the fields, Mary Jane went to take him some water... and returned two hours later. When she turned up pregnant, Amanda really read her the riot act about being such a bad person, getting pregnant out of wedlock. Mary Jane told her not to get so uppity... George was the baby's father! Well, Amanda kicked Mary Jane out, so Mary Jane went to live with her brother Jesse. The two sisters did not speak to each other again, I am told. I have the full story written down. If you'd like a copy, I can mail it to you. I also have photos of George RIGDON and wife Amanda PULLEN, plus one of Jesse PULLEN and one of Mary Jane PULLEN and her husband John Jefferson GRIFFIN. Quite an interesting bunch.... Family "legend" has it that the spelling difference came over liquor... one bunch of the family didn't drink, and one bunch did. So one of the two spelled their names PULLIN and the other chose PULLEN. I have no way of documenting that, other than the fact that my grandfather Harmon Rannels GRIFFIN and his sister Onie told me that story in the 1970s. All I know of Maron Austin PULLEN (and I have a picture of him with Carl Gaston, Carl's son and grandson), b. 11 Aug 1879 in Duffy or Little Rock, Neshoba, MS; d. 31 Mar 1963) is that he married Rosie RICHARDSON (b. Sep 1881 in MS) and they had Leslie PULLEN (b. Jul 1898) and Carl Gaston PULLEN (b. Feb 1900 in Neshoba co.; d. 1989 in Union, Neshoba, MS). Do you know anything about Leslie? Were there other siblings? Thank you so much for writing and sharing with me our family connection. It's always good to meet another "cousin." Let's keep in touch! Debi Griffin Campbell
Debi: I'll try to get Ann Bohannon McDonald to sent my files to you if she can. I can send snal mail with an address. I have nothing on Leslie Pullen but I have nine others after the date you give. I have Rosie Richardson b Sep 9 1881. Info from Carl's grdau at Union, MS. Carl sure could make fine syrup from cane. Alton Bohannon PO Box 11, Morehouse, MO 63868. Yes! I'm related to the whole bunch, but I'm particularly interested in three of the ones you mentioned: Carl Gaston PULLEN, Marion Auston PULLEN, and William PULLEN... though their names may be PULLIN or POLLEN. Marion Auston was the first child of my great-grandmother, a child she had out of wedlock. Her brother, Jesse PULLEN, took her and the baby in until she met and married my great-grandpa, John Jefferson GRIFFIN (also from Neshoba co.). Carl is his son, I think. I would love to have those birth and death dates, and the names of the cemeteries, if you have time. I really appreciate it! Thanks so much! THANKS SUSAN: I really appreciate your input.
Last time I was there, the road between Jackson and Philadelphia, 25, was great. In fact, Mississippi has always seemed to have slightly better roads than other places! The directions below are good. And, if you have any trouble at all, the folks at the Library are great to help!
