For those of you who have had trouble finding some of the Neshoba County cemeteries, my father and I drove a number of them last week. I have uploaded exact directions on my Web Page: http://www.carolshouse.com to the following cemeteries: Neshoba Dixon Primitive Baptist Pine Grove Church of God Old Carolina Presbyterian Beech Springs Mt. Zion Methodist Good Hope Baptist Mt. Carmel Wheatfield Congregational Methodist High Hill I also took over 500 new tombstone pictures but it will take a little longer to get them all uploaded to the Web Page. Carol Shrader

I'm still trying to find out all the information I can on my great grandparents. Tonight I'm concentrating on my great grandmother, Mary Undine Brown, who married my great grandfather, Joseph Abner (Joab) Johnson. They married in Pontotoc Co. in July 1858, and then must have moved rather soon after to Neshoba Co., as my grandfather, John Randal Johnson was born in Neshoba in June of 1859. In 1861, they had another son, James H. Johnson. They were listed on the 1860 Neshoba Co. census, Joseph being 23 and Mary, 21, with one child, John R. Johnson. Joseph was listed as being born in Alabama and listed as being a wagon maker. The only other record I have found on him as an adult was where he bought land from a Washington Fry - 40 acres in the Williams or Williamstown area, west of Philadelphia. I cannot locate him after 1860, so I assume that he probably joined up with the Confederacy and was either killed or died of a disease and never came back to Neshoba Co. Mary rem! arried within only a couple of years to a neighbor, a widower by the name of Judge Samuel McNeil. He was much older than Mary, having been born in 1800 and he had a grown son - Green Berry McNeil and at least two daughters - Mary Elizabeth McNeil and a married daughter, Sara Durant. I have a copy of Judge McNeil's will, but it really doesn't tell me anything about Mary Undine, except that she was the Executrix and she inherited everything. Now, I believe they had one child together - Alice. One of the McNeil girls married a Duke and the other, an Osborn. Green Berry McNeil was married to an Arledge girl. I thought maybe if I mentioned some of these names, somebody might descend from some of these people and might know something about Mary Undine (Brown) Johnson McNeil. Well, Judge McNeil died in 1865 and there was Mary, with her own two sons by my g grandfather, the two mcNeil girls, and one other child - William. I don't know how he could have possibly belonged to J! udge McNeil, but he is listed in the household with all the rest of them. Later, in the 1880's, Mary married a third time to a Pinckney C. Webb, but they had no children together. He was a widower also and did apparently have children, as I once heard from one of his descendants by e-mail. This descendant did not have any info on Mary Undine either except that he knew she was buried in the Good Hope Church Cemetery. Thanks for any help you can give me. Sue (Johnson) Howard
Oh, I'm sorry, there was one more Walton girl - a Nettie Walton. Also, I was thinking maybe I should list the rest of the pupils. There was Kips Harrison, George Harrison, Lewis Yates, Lester Yates, Robert Cannon, Irvin Trapp, my three uncles - Joe, Jim and Bob Johnson, Roy Kennedy, Alva Kennedy, Grady Cannon, Claudie Whittington, and Caraway Cannon. For the girls, there was Oma Walton, Ollie Walton, Mittie Walton, Nettie Walton, Alma Cannon, Ethel Cannon, Stella Yates, Jewelle Graham, Pauline Johnson (not related to me that I know of), Nola Trapp, Clara Harrison, Alma Johnson (my aunt - she married a Dan McDonald), Mary Kennedy and Georgia Whittington. I'm sure these names are probably not going to help you in any way, but I did finally locate the listing of "Pupils - Cold Water School, Philadelphia, Miss., Term 1908-1909." There were three Walton girls listed, two of whom became my aunts by marriage as they married two of my father's brothers. The names were Oma Walton, Ollie Walton and Mittie Walton. Lyda Majure was the teacher and my grandfather, John R. Johnson, was one of the Trustees, along with a B. F. Graham and another name which was not legible. Oma Walton married my uncle, Bob Johnson, and Ollie Walton married my uncle, Jim Johnson. My father was not in this school as he was born in 1885 and got married in 1909 to my mother, Elizabeth Gertrude (Trudy) Gilbert. Sally, I am in Florida and can understand your difficulty in finding Beech Springs Memorial Cemetery--all the roads in Neshoba confuse me. But, from my map, it appears that the cemetery in on Hwy. 210 [runs east and west m/l] and Hwys. 21 and 311, both of which run in m/l north and south. Good luck in your search, Gerry
Thank you for this information. I do know that Elizabeth Walton was called Betty and that there are some men named Green berry in my family. I tried to find the cemetery this summer, but had no luck. I hope to try again in the spring. I am in South Carolina and at the present time and we are iced in. Thanks again for your help. Sally, Unfortunately, I did not find any reference to the Page's--either one, but I did locate something that may be of interest. In the Beech Springs Memorial Cemetery listing, there are several Waltons. One is: Elizabeth Walton- 14 February 1856--23 April 1916--wife of J. G. Walton I'm sending this because of two things: (1) There are always "typos" and since my own great-grandfather is identified in this book as "G" N. Hudson when he was actually Christopher Newton Hudson, I thought there could be a strong possibiltiy that this is your Betty Walton. (2) Just below the name of Elizabeth Walton is Greenberry Walton, May 26 1883-May 29, 1883, s/o J.C. AND E.E.WALTON --which further strengthens my belief that the J.G. Walton was a typo or misreading of the tombstone marking--a very easy thing to do. (3) Two names before Elizabeth Walton is a Mrs. M.B. Wayne, October 20, 1834-July 17, 1916. (4) I'm fascinated because there are so many Waltons buried near and around my Hendersons relatives in this cemetery and near Hays family members, though not my family, one of my great-uncles was married to a Hays. I hope something of this will be helpful. Good luck in your search, Gerry
Thank you so much for helping. My grandmother's mother was Betty Wayne Walton. She was the first wife of John C. Walton. Sally The earth which sustains humanity, must not be injured, it must not be destroyed. Hildegarde of Bingen
Thank you so much for checking. My grandmother's married was Page. Her husband was Charles Amaziah Page. My great grandmother was Betty Wayne Walton. Sally The earth which sustains humanity, must not be injured, it must not be destroyed. Hildegarde of Bingen
Sally, There is no cross reference for maiden names in the "Our Links to the Past" so would you please send me the surname of your grandfather and I'll be happy to check for La Vada/Vada. There is a John C. Walton buried in Mt. Sinai Cemetery. It shows that he was born on April 8, 1860 and died on July 16, 1927. Savannah E. Walton, b. October 11, 1865: d. Janaury 30, 1912 is buried next to him. Their dates seem to fit the time frome you mentioned. There are at least three other John C. or J.C. Walton's listed but the times frames do not fit. Sincerely, Gerry
As a matter of fact, I had two aunts by marriage with the last name of Walton. One was an Ollie Walton and the other was Oma Walton. They were sisters and these two sisters married two of my father's brothers whose last name was Johnson. They must have lived in the Coldwater community, out from Philadelphia and near the Fairgrounds, because I have a list of students at the Coldwater School during the early 1900's, and there were three Walton girls listed. My grandfather, John R. Johnson, was one of the Trustees of the school. I will look at the list again as soon as I get a chance and see what the other Walton girl's name was.
