    3. There is no listing for Samuel Charles Green in the Newton County Cemetery book. So there must not be a readable tombstone. Was Catherine Wallace his wife? Would she be listed as a Green also? Do you know approximately where they lived? You will enjoy your September visit. In addition to cemetery and courthouse exploration, the library in Philadelphia has a nice collection. The Newton County Historical & Genealogical Society has also been accumulating a good bit of information, They are located in a building across the street on the east of the courthouse in Decatur. Check on their hours when you are planning your schedule. If you don't have relatives locally there are a number of places to stay on the West side of Philadelphia thanks to the popularity of the Pearl River Resort. 3. Carol, Yes Catherine was Samuel's wife. All I have is that they died in was buried in Newton County. Headstones made back then are weathered away by now. I just thought by chance there might be a church record or some other records around. The lady that runs the library in Philadelphia last name is Green. I talked with her a couple of times. I think the roof fell in and they are doing lots of repairs there right now. She said it would be done pretty soon. Your dad said they have a good genealogical collection there. Well, thanks for your interest and I like your website. 3. I am familiar with Steam Mill and forwarded your message to my father to help you with directions. But I wasn't familiar with Mill Dale so I looked it up in the Neshoba County Cemetery book. That book refers to it as Mill Dale Cemetery (Old Steam Mill). So that may be the one you want after all. According to the Township & Range, its not too far from Steam Mill. There are only 10 tombstone listings: 2 Green (George & Saloma), 7 Hawkins, & 1 Griffin. Steam Mill Presbyterian is bigger. There are 3 Greens there: Henry Travis, Henry Darrell, & Polly Kate Wilson. Judging by the names buried there it is families that lived very near the Leake / Neshoba line. The same family names can also be found at High Hill, Morrow & Rocky Hill. 3. Carol, just to let you know I hope to go see your mother and father sometime during the month of April. I'm going to Louisiana and Mississippi, leaving on April 18th. I'm going to Clarksdale, MS for my 50th high school reunion on April 30-May 1, and then my sister Jean and I are going to the Johnson family reunion in Jackson on Sunday, May 2nd. This is a reunion for the descendants of Joseph Abner Johnson and Mary Undine Brown, and John Randal Johnson and Louisa Frances (Fanny) Clark. I'm sure we would welcome all descendants of John Randal Johnson's brother, James H. Johnson and his wife, Augusta Savell, as well. Maybe, just maybe, we will be able to go on over into Neshoba Co and Union Co. We will be in Jean's car and she is now 88 years old, so I'll have to convince her of that. Next time I go home we will map the cemeteries we missed in that area and then get those on the East side of Hwy 15, which we didn't have time to do this trip. > Carol Shrader > > > > From: "Ann McDonald" <mcdonald@bpsnetworks.com> > > Date: 2004/03/09 Tue PM 01:13:38 EST > > To: MSNESHOB-L@rootsweb.com > > Subject: RE: [MSNESHOB] Cemetery Directions > > > > My thanks to Carol for all the help she has provided to the list. 3. I'm sure your father had a wealth of information to share with you. I know you had to really enjoy the drive with your father. -----Original Message----- From: wi4k@cox.net [mailto:wi4k@cox.net] Sent: Tuesday, March 09, 2004 10:26 AM To: MSNESHOB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: RE: [MSNESHOB] Cemetery Directions My father was the rural mail carrier for the entire area from Union to Neshoba to Dixon and then almost to Sebastopol and back to Union from about 1959 until his retirement. 2. Hello, Just read your e-mail regarding the unique situation with High Hill Church and High Hill Cemetery--that clears questions I've had regarding "Which County?". Thanks so much. But, of even more interest is the fact that you took pictures of all the Green family buried there. By any miraculous chance, did you find a tombstone for Louisa Jane Green? 2nd wife of James Green. I would really appreciate hearing about which Greens are buried at High Hill. My grandparents [Hudson's are there] and Louisa Jane Jones was first married to William David Hudson [he is buried at Camp Chase, Ohio where he died during The War]. I have checked my copy of "Our Links to the Past" but have had no luck at locating the burial site of either James Green or either of his two wives--Elizabeth and my gg-grandmother, Louisa Janes Jones Hudson Green, b. April 18, 1826, GA. Many thanks, Gerry Geraldine Rogers Lee

    3. Sorry to tell you that the James you are interested in is not there unless he is like my gg grandparents Robert & Winnie Dillard Green without a marker. There is a large spot in about the center of the cemetery on a slight rise which some cousins told me several years ago was were they are buried. It would be possible that the James you are looking for might be there also. James is Robert's older brother. I don't know where James's first wife Elizabeth is buried but it's a good thought that she might be there also. She died between July 1870 (on census in Leake Co. close to Robert & Winnie) and 27 Nov 1870 (when James md Louisa Jane) The Green's I have photos of their markers are: Oscar & Nettie Comans Green and 5 unnamed children Gertie Gardner Green James Harold Green Bobby Joe & Cecile Green Noah Oscar & Mary Green Gilmore I also have photos of some Gardner's & Pinter's Thanks for the DOB of Louisa Jane I only had the year, do you know her DOD. -----Original Message----- From: EvHLee@aol.com [mailto:EvHLee@aol.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 09, 2004 9:19 AM To: MSNESHOB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MSNESHOB] Cemetery Directions Hello, Just read your e-mail regarding the unique situation with High Hill Church and High Hill Cemetery--that clears questions I've had regarding "Which County?". 3. My thanks to Carol for all the help she has provided to the list. I sure could have used some help with directions last summer. I was searching for the High Hill Cemetery. I had even been there before. I flagged down a local farmer at the intersection of 2 roads which were unmarked and low and behold he was going right past the High Hill Cemetery. After making pictures of the Green's who have markers there my parents and I went across the road to the church and parsonage to talk with the pastor. This is where we found out that the church is in one county and the cemetery across the road is in another. The pastor showed us a marker in the county line is. This is the USGS site http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form where you can lookup locations. This site shows what the pastor told us about them being in different counties. Below is the information about the church & cemetery. ======================================= Feature Type: church State: Mississippi County: Neshoba Variant Name(s) High Hill Baptist Church USGS 7.5' x 7.5' Map: Sebastopol 323729N 0891902W ========================================== Feature Name: High Hill Cemetery Feature Type: cemetery State: Mississippi County: Leake USGS 7.5' x 7.5' Map: Sebastopol 323726N 0891905W ========================================== -----Original Message----- From: Carol Shrader [mailto:wi4k@cox.net] Sent: Monday, March 08, 2004 9:38 PM To: MSNESHOB-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [MSNESHOB] Cemetery Directions For those of you who have had trouble finding some of the Neshoba County cemeteries, my father and I drove a number of them last week. 3. That was a lot of work! Thanks for sharing. I am so glad to get something from the list. If it seemed I just disappeared for awhile you are correct. Had a big problem with computer. Lost most of the mail. Fortunately I had backed up a lot of things. Now am back and trying to catch up on all the queries going around that I was involved in.... So, I still have the books and am willing to look things up. Hope things have been going well with sharing information. Julie Russell (Cannon, Tullos, Fox, Boone....)
