I have a problem I am in hopes someone can help me with. When I first started the quest for my heritage, I found a tombstone for my ancestor, Elvira Caroline Moore Byrd, wife of John Kirk Byrd, in the Thompson-Stanford Cemetery, which was on the property where she and husband lived. Dr. Evans has the tombstone as John Kirk Byrd's marker in his book but it says on the marker, "Elvira C. Byrd, Wife of John Kirk Byrd", but is barely legible. A few months ago, Terry Thornton so graciously sent me pictures of tombstones for Elvira C. Moore Byrd and John Kirk Byrd and they are in the Shiloah Cemetery in Monroe Co., MS. John Kirk Byrd died in 1891 and Elvira died 1905, but I'm not sure if she is buried in the Thompson-Stanford Cemetery or in the Shiloah Cemetery. Does ANYONE know which grave is really hers or why she had two different tombstones??? The marker at Shiloah looks newer than the other one so I'm wondering if John Kirk Byrd was actually buried in Shiloah and the descendant who erected them assumed Elvira was buried there also, not knowing about the other marker, so they erected both of them. I'm hoping there is a descendant on this list who might know the answer to this haunting question. Glenda McWhirter Todd
Glenda, There is a problem with the Evans' 1938 transcription of Thompson/George Stanford Cemetery, pages 109 - 110 of MONORE COUNTY MISSISSIPPI CEMETERY RECORDS. In May 1938, Dr. Evans, assisted by Horace Baker and Frank Crawford inventoried the George Stanford Cemetery. They must have also inventoried the Shiloh Cemetery which is located nearby beccause their list of Stanford Cemetery contains 9 names from Shiloh Cemetery and only 14 names from Stanford Cemetery. It is my opinion that the lists of two cemeteries which Dr. Evans and his crew inventoried in 1938 got mixed up and combined when the manuscript was being typed --- and that the mistake haunts us decades later. I cannot find Shiloh Cemetery in their index of cemeteries. If you have access to the Evans inventory as reprinted in 1980, the last two names listed as Stanford Cemetery at the bottom of page 109 is the beginning of the Shiloh Cemetery burials which continues on the top of page 110. The only reference on either page to BIRD is "Bird, John K. Born -- 26 Sept. 1831, Died -- 21 Sept. 1905" on page 110. No other notation or reference to Bird burials is made by Evans on either page. You may also wish to consult the inventory of Shiloh Cemetery done by Patricia Horne. She found both of your Byrds when she was there in 2006. Her inventory is at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~msmonro2/cems/shiloh.html I did an inventory based upon photographs of the grave markers at both Shiloh and Thompson/Stanford in 2009. No Bird/Byrd burials were found at Thompson/Stanford; two Byrd burials were noted at Shiloh. That inventory with links to the photographs is from March 20, 2009 and was published in article # 80 of Cemeteries of the Hill Country http://cemeterieshillcountry.blogspot.com/2009/08/cemeteries-of-hill-country-cd-ordering.html). It is my opinon that both Mr and Mrs Byrd are buried at Shiloh Cemetery --- both their large markers are located there. But can't these old records confuse us completely? Hope this helps. And my offer still stands --- next time you are in Monroe County let me know in advance and I'll make arrangement to take you to Shiloh Cemetery where John K Byrd and his wife's grave markers are located. I am trying to find out more about this family. One of his daughters, Carrie B. Moore, married Silas Barksdale Gillespie. He was from Chickasaw County near Egypt, I believe. He worked for the railroad and the family had moved to Tuscaloosa. Carrie died on October 11, 1911, possibly in Tuscaloosa, and is buried in Aberdeen at Odd Fellows Rest. I know nothing more about where her family than what I found on the 1880 census. I believe James Moore was a son of Lucien Blevins Moore and Rebecca J. Buckingham. Descendants of James Moore Generation No. 1 1. JAMES3 MOORE (LUCIEN BLEVINS2, JAMES1) was born Bet. 1833 - 1835 in Cotton Gin Port, Monroe County, Mississippi, and died Aft. 1880 in Beat 3, Monroe County, Mississippi. He married ELIZABETH _________. She was born 1845 in Mississippi, and died Aft. 1880 in Beat 3, Monroe County, Mississippi. Deaths and places of burial are unknown to me. Children of JAMES MOORE and ELIZABETH ______ are: i. MARY B.4 MOORE, b. Abt. 1866; d. Aft. 1880, Cotton Gin, Monroe County, Mississippi. Marriage, death and place of burial are unknown to me. ii. CARRIE B. MOORE, b. December 14, 1868, Monroe, Mississippi; d. October 11, 1911, Aberdeen, Monroe, Mississippi; m. SILAS BARKSDALE GILLESPIE, November 18, 1887, Monroe, Mississippi; b. August 29, 1866, Chickasaw County, MS; d. October 13, 1935, Artesia, Lowndes, Mississippi, USA. iii. WALTER MOORE, b. April 1870, Monroe County, Mississippi; d. Bet. 1870 - 1880, Monroe County, Mississippi. Marriage, death and place of burial are unknown to me. iv. MAGGIE B. MOORE, b. 1877. d. after 1880 . Marriage, death and place of burial are unknown to me. Clare Herrick
I don't know if this is the right James Moore, but the timing seems right: James Moore married Elizabeth Troup on 17 Jan 1865 in Monroe County. This is from Hunting for Bears, MS Marriages.
