Below is some research I picked up while searching for Hiram C. Edge. The following is a list of military commissions awarded to Monroe County men in the Mississippi Militia during the 1840's. I've done some research on the MS Militia but haven't found much. Apparently MS had an active militia from the time of the War of 1812 until at least the Civil War. It appears the officers served for one year. The call for volunteers to the Militia for the Mexican War did not occur until late 1846 and the 17th Regiment is not one of the three regiments that went to that war from MS. However, that doesn't mean that some of these men did not serve as the men may have been put in other regiments. Robin Note to Lori Thornton: You are welcome to post these names on the Monroe Military pages if you want. These records are held at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in Jackson, MS. Film: rg33mf3, pg 117-118. MDAH. Archive staff will photocopy the pages from the film for you. If you are out-of-state the cost is $15.00 plus 50 cents a page and requests must be in writing by snail mail, paid in advance. In-state requests can be made by email and I understand that the cost is for copies only. None of their films are available for Inter-Library loan.
