    3. The Itawamba Co list is posting questions about Itawamba ancestors. My Itawamba question also concerns Monore Co and I thought I'd also ask here. My question - Who was the 1st wife of John Haas? Background: One of the great mysteries in my MS line is who was the mother of my great-grandfather, John Franklin Haas? My gggrandfather, John Haas, was born in TN in 1810 and first appears in MS in Monroe Co in 1839 (aged 29) when he witnessed a will for John Tubb. The Tubb & Haas surnames are found in the same area of TN. Some of the Tubb names in TN disappear about the same time they show up in Monroe -assumption: These men moved together from TN to Monroe Co. Although there were several Tubbs, the only Haas in Monroe is my John. John lived in the area of Tubb's corner (now Hatley) until he purchased land in Itawamba Co in 1849 (area that later became Lee Co). Was John's wife a Tubb female? Not according to the published Tubb Histories and researchers. Since John was 29 when he appears in MS did he marry in TN? Not that I can find and I've read every line of every marriage microfilm I can find for the TN areas where I've found the Haas/Hass name. Did he marry in MS? Once again not that I can find in the Marriage records. The 1840 Monroe census shows a housefull of people, several more than found on the 1850 census. On the 1850 Itawamba census the adult female in John's household was listed as Mary Ann, but according to one of the son's (John O Haas, born 25 Sep 1845) family Bible his mother's name was Lucy and she died 27 Aug 1851. My great grandfather (the last child born) was born 23 Mar 1849 - assumption: Both James and John had the same mother. I've never found Lucy as a nick name for Mary Ann. Did the census taker make a mistake? Were Lucy & Mary Ann really the same person? The 1850 census required that everyone in the household on Jun 1st be counted - even if they were only visiting and not family members. Was Mary Ann a relative? Was Lucy elsewhere? The surnames involved with John Haas' family are: Children of John & Lucy/Mary Ann Martha Ann married John F Thompson and then a man named Johnson James married Mary Looney John Franklin married Cecilia Amanda Gibson. No information on Elizabeth F (b 1839) or William S/L (b 1843) John married Talitha Robinson in 1852 Talitha & John's children: Elen Rachel married J F Baker who worked for the railroad Matilda Caroline married W T Lawrence No information on Mary L (b 1853) or Rebecca M (b 1860) Any information or help will be greatly appreciated.
