    1. Little Monroe history
    2. For those who are no fully aware of the History of Monroe and might have a hard time locating ancestors, etc., it might help you know Monroe Countians though they were living in Alabama until an act of the AL Legislature defined the boundary lines in early 1821 and it was determined they were in MS. In addition, Lowndes County (Columbus) was formed from the southern part of Monroe in 1830. In fact, the term "Mother Monroe" comes form the fact that she was parent county to several new counties as they formed over the years from the early 1800's through the 1850's. This area of the state is noted as the longest running Western Frontier in history. Pioneers come to the area to wait out the Indians for land opportunities. Some arrived as early as the end of the Indian wars (c. 1814). Many families settled to wait and were in the area as many as 20 years ... waiting for the chance to cross the Tombigbee and claim their share of the American dream. The Indian lands west of the Tombigbee River were not opened until the mid 1830's. My point? You might also want to check Lowndes and other surrounding counties for ancestors.
