    1. Re: [MSMONROE] Where was Cotton Gin Port ?
    2. Gerry Parchman
    3. As I recall from articles on the Chickasaw lands on the western side of Monroe County (surrounding the early county except for the Alabama border), Cotton Gin Port was on the border of the Chickasaw territory at the western edge of Monroe County and processed the cotton grown by many of the Chickasaws. The Chickasaw chief kept a trading post on the Indian side of the border. The Chickasaws were more westernized than most Indian tribes, having log and wooden homes and slaves, as well as growing cotton. They also intermarried with white people and were allowed to remain in Mississippi when other Indian tribes were forced to go to Indian Territory (Oklahoma). But their leaders were so disappointed in the deterioration of their culture exposed to white infiltration (especially due to alcohol and exploitation) that they decided to make the trek to Oklahoma voluntarily. They were promised supplies and support for their trek through Arkansas by the government, but it failed to materialize (again due to exploitation and graft) and many of them died there on their trail of tears. Some of my Parchman distant cousins lived near Cotton Gin Port in the 1820s. Here are some links I found: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ms/monroe/history/cottongp.txt http://www.swroadsigns.com/mscrossings/cgp2.htm http://books.google.com/books?id=IvzXNLjyzJkC&pg=PA147&lpg=PA147&dq=Cotton+Gin+Port+Mississippi+Chickasaws&source=bl&ots=-814WbMA5N&sig=IkxqF81fKjH3G2KiVD2zh4dDUEA&hl=en&ei=C5_ISpKrHdCSlAf0zJmSAw&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3#v=onepage&q=Cotton%20Gin%20Port%20Mississippi%20Chickasaws&f=false This latter link must be pasted in its entirety into the web URL space. 3. I would like to make a suggestion, and hope I'm not out of order, here, but it is my opinion that it would be much better for the archives, and much easier to read, if, when replying to a message on the list, we would delete all other previous messages than the one to which we are replying. This is especially true when there is as much wonderful information as has been on the list lately. Thanks, and I apologize if this is out of order, Glenda

    1. Re: [MSMONROE] Danner Cemetery
    2. Mary Anna Riggan
    3. I found my directions..........for anyone who's interested. Anne, we need you to document the burial of the babies. Both should have death certificates. These two cemeteries are so close and seem to have "over-lapping" family connections. Dr. Hamilton has them listed as this: S T R Lockhart 5-14-17 Danner 5-14-16 For Lockhart......From Aberdeen/Amory, intersect US Hwy 278 E. going toward Gattman, MS. As you are nearing Gattman, watch for a white (off white) sign on the right side of the road which says, "Gattman Holiness Church." The paved road you need to take goes between that sign and a brown/tan metal building. It is a short, winding, up hill road. As you come to the top of the hill, the church will be in front of you. To the right will be the Northington Cemetery. To the left will be the new part of Lockhart cemetery. Look over your right shoulder and there is the old part of the cemetery. For Danner.....Back track out of Lockhart Cemetery down to US HWY 278 E. Turn right. Go ~.8 mile (At the time we went, they had bright blue garbage cans on the roadside, but now probably have the new county ones.) Turn right by the garbage cans. The road immediately splits into two driveways. The left one goes up the hill. The cemetery can be accessed from this point. Park your car at the top of the hill (private residence to your left), look for a "path" into the woods on the right. Go down the path, bear to the left until you find another "path"......the cemetery should be on your left. The right driveway skirts around a few trees and appears to be going right up to a provate residence......and it does. As you drive up to the side of the house, look up and left. You should see a "path" go into the woods. Take that path, bearing to the right as you intersect another trail, and the cemetery should be on the left. If someone is home at either residence, in my opinion, it would be good to state your business and ask their permission. "Terry" Thornton <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [MSMONROE] Thompson-Stanford Cemetery To: [email protected] Date: Saturday, October 3, 2009, 6:35 PM Jim, This is one of the older cemeteries I would like to photograph --- I do hope you are willing to show it to me one of these days. The names you mention are included in the inventory of DANNER CEMETERY on the Monroe County Mississippi Genealogy and History page --- inventory by Nita Lindsey whose email address is given. She may have knowledge of this family. Evans in May 1938 inventoried DANNER CEMETERY (page 137, Monroe County Mississippi Cemetery Records) as having three marked graves: McKOWN, W.M June 25, 1830 - January 28, 1862 McDOWN (sic), Lavina November 27, 1836 - March 31, 1870 MORROW, Francis Company A, 1st Mississippi Infantry, C.S.A. No dates I know nothing about the McKowns or of Morrow except what I've learned from the census today. I find neither name in the Chancery Court Records Index; in Mother Monroe a W.M. McKEOWN is mentioned as being a member of Company A, Beckett's Battalion of the 1st Battalion Mississippi Infantry, C.S.A. This is the same unit that Francis Morrow was in. But on the Pikeville PO, Western Division, Marion County AL 1860 Census I find WILLIAM McKEOWN, 30 born SC LEVINA McKEOWN, 19 born SC GEORGE McKEOWN, 2, born AL and living next door: FRANCIS MORROW, 26 born SC LUCINA MORROW, 23 born MS Martha MORROW, 7/12 born AL More research is needed to determine the relationship, if any, between Morrow and McKeown --- they could be married to sisters but that is just speculation. I wish someone else would transcribe the 1860 census image page --- the spelling of LUCINA Morrow is tentative. The SC census reports may also tell something of the Morrow/McKeown family relationships. Some good materials to consider: 1. McKeown and Morrow are buried in the same cemetery 2. McKeown and Morrow probably served in the same C.S.A. military unit. 3. McKeown and Morrow were both born in SC When I have time I will try to track Martha Morrow and George McKeown in the census/internet to determine if there is a record there to explain who these folks are. I have not attempted to track Francis Morrow on the census records yet --- but he may be listed on the Monroe County MS census after 1860. Thanks, Jim, for pointing out this cemetery. 3. Greg, 'Long time, no contact.....how are you??? I worked up directions and map to both Danner and Lockhart Cemeteries. Terry may have his copy handy. (Terry, if you recall our lunch at Pickle's on the hill with Lori and others. I gave out directions and map.) If not, I'll send later. I don't know how Jim went in, but either way off US Hwy 278 E, you have to go onto private property. Although, he could have gone in from the back where his son hunts. If anyone is interested, this Morrow line is proven for DAR membership. I have been shown a small cemetery at Gatman with at most five burials, three marked by proper tombstones and the others by sandstone. A man, W Mitchell Mckown dated June 25 1830/Jan 28 1862 with wife Lavina dated Nov 27 1839?/Nov 31 1870. Also a confederate marker for Francis Morrow with no dates. I cannot find anything on the McKown, (Cowan)? but find in 1860 census of Marion Co A Francis Morrow of 26 yr from S C. With wife Lucina of 23 yr from Mississippi. "Terry" Thornton Sent: Saturday, October 03, 2009 9:19 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MSMONROE] Thompson-Stanford Cemetery Glenda, There is a problem with the Evans' 1938 transcription of Thompson/George Stanford Cemetery, pages 109 - 110 of MONORE COUNTY MISSISSIPPI CEMETERY RECORDS. In May 1938, Dr. Evans, assisted by Horace Baker and Frank Crawford inventoried the George Stanford Cemetery. They must have also inventoried the Shiloh Cemetery which is located nearby beccause their list of Stanford Cemetery contains 9 names from Shiloh Cemetery and only 14 names from Stanford Cemetery. It is my opinion that the lists of two cemeteries which Dr. Evans and his crew inventoried in 1938 got mixed up and combined when the manuscript was being typed --- and that the mistake haunts us decades later. I cannot find Shiloh Cemetery in their index of cemeteries. If you have access to the Evans inventory as reprinted in 1980, the last two names listed as Stanford Cemetery at the bottom of page 109 is the beginning of the Shiloh Cemetery burials which continues on the top of page 110. The only reference on either page to BIRD is "Bird, John K. Born -- 26 Sept. 1831, Died -- 21 Sept. 1905" on page 110. No other notation or reference to Bird burials is made by Evans on either page. You may also wish to consult the inventory of Shiloh Cemetery done by Patricia Horne. She found both of your Byrds when she was there in 2006. Her inventory is at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~msmonro2/cems/shiloh.html I did an inventory based upon photographs of the grave markers at both Shiloh and Thompson/Stanford in 2009. No Bird/Byrd burials were found at Thompson/Stanford; two Byrd burials were noted at Shiloh. That inventory with links to the photographs is from March 20, 2009 and was published in article # 80 of Cemeteries of the Hill Country http://cemeterieshillcountry.blogspot.com/2009/08/cemeteries-of-hill-country -cd-ordering.html). 3. 'Just a comment......the Alsup, Danner, and Morrow families are related. Others connected are Ray, Irvin, and Smithson, to name a few. These families were mostly in SE Monroe, with others up toward Splunge and Sipsey Fork. 3. I looked up the Military unit and the two service records to see if there were some useful clues, but there is very little about the unit. It may be that after 60 days it dissolved and the men went into other units. William died in January and there were no battles in MS that I am aware of, so I would guess that he may have contracted a contagious diseases from another soldier. Neither one of the men appear in any other unit. Francis Morrow, Pvt. The record shows a “period of service from Nov 1861 to June 1862”, but that probably doesn’t refer to their actual service. 3. I do have some Morrows in my file - one Jennet "Jane" married to a William McCain (McCains are my line). Jennet daughter of John Morrow and Margaret Boyd.   Also I see on the 'net that William Mitchell McKown in the Danner Cemetery was the son of George and Jane Lockhart McKown of Union Co., SC.  W.M. married Lavina Tate.   Sandra --- On Sat, 10/3/09, Mary Anna Riggan <[email protected]> wrote: From: Mary Anna Riggan <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [MSMONROE] Thompson-Stanford Cemetery To: [email protected] Date: Saturday, October 3, 2009, 8:59 PM 'Just a comment......the Alsup, Danner, and Morrow families are related. The names you mention are included in the inventory of DANNER CEMETERY on the Monroe County Mississippi Genealogy and History page --- inventory by Nita Lindsey whose email address is given. Evans in May 1938 inventoried DANNER CEMETERY (page 137, Monroe County Mississippi Cemetery Records) as having three marked graves: McKOWN, W.M June 25, 1830 - January 28, 1862 McDOWN (sic), Lavina November 27, 1836 - March 31, 1870 MORROW, Francis Company A, 1st Mississippi Infantry, C.S.A. 3. This is what I have in my Pickle data base: A man named James Morrow had two sons - John and Francis. John married a Sarah and had two daughters that I know of: Nancy Jane and Mary E. Nancy Jane married John H. Pickle. Francis had one daughter that I know of: Martha Jane Morrow. Martha marred a Rufus Irvin. Where is this cemetery located? It is my opinion that the lists of two cemeteries which Dr. Evans and his crew inventoried in 1938 got mixed up and combined when the manuscript was being typed --- and that the mistake haunts us decades later. 3. Jim, You were in the Danner Cemetery. It bothers me greatly that the cemetery has been more or less "forgotten." It's hard to get to now, so in a few more years, it'll probably be one of the "lost" ones. I'm really curious to know who knew where Danner was located. I did some work on the McKown/McGown family several years ago. If you're interested, I can look up those notes. 3. I believe the name in the census should have been "Lucinda".  I found an entry on WorldConnect for this Francis Morrow - he married Lucinda Alsop, father Elisha Benton Alsop, mother Martha Rees.  I couldn't see a connection to the McKowns in this entry.   Sandra --- On Sat, 10/3/09, William T. 3. Terry, Mary Anna, While everyone is on cemeteries I would like some info. Also a child Martha of 7 months old. Just curious as to who they were and what or where their families may be. It is my opinon that both Mr and Mrs Byrd are buried at Shiloh Cemetery --- both their large markers are located there. But can't these old records confuse us completely? Hope this helps. 3. Molly, We still call it Cotton Gin Port. Traveling west out of Amory on US Hwy 278, you'll find a Historical Marker denoting the area. My understanding is that the actual port/town was south of the marker along the Tombigbee River. Maybe other listmembers, more knowledgeable than I, will answer your question.
