There are photos of the Mayfield family taken by McKnight that I am sure had to be taken at the home ... meaning he did travel some. I couldn't say where or how far, my family was in Amory and Cotton Gin Port before that. Evans Memorial Library in Aberdeen has a nice collection of his glass negatives and will make you copies of the photos for $10 ea., I think. The Library may have additional info on McKnight Studios Gracie Mayfield Morlino *********************************************************************************** Incoming and outgoing mail scanned with Norton Corp. Edition anti-virus.
Hello Jean, You may get an answer from someone in Aberdeen, but if not, here is my two cents worth. I looked through some of the McKnight photographs a few years ago. What I remember is that they seemed to be studio portraits. However, I only looked at a few dozen of them. Robin
Does anyone know if McKnight photographers traveled to surrounding areas and into Lamr and Fayette Counties in Alabama and took photos? Or did the patrons go to the studio at Aberdeen? Thank you, Jean Carr
I would love to hear from anyone who can help with information about the Williams family buried at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church? There is a section of Williams tombstones -- Thomas H. Williams b. 2-13-1847/3-10-1904; John H. Williams 6-15-1850/11-12-1926; W.H. Williams 1879/1930; Isabella M. Williams 9-20-1870/5-3-1946; Hamp Williams 2-11-1902/1-27-1925; Lena Whitaker 7-22-1898/9-17-1932 (family member?); next is infant of Ray Williams Are Thomas and John brothers? Is this Thomas possibly the father of Albert David Williams (m. Bessie Tate) and Archie who lived on Wolfe Road and whose parents were Thomas Williams/Nancy Stephens. Nancy Stephens Williams is buried at Pickle Cemetery.
Hello! I'm new to the list as I've been working on the Stockton/Franklin connection. On the 1850 census, in addition to finding the families of James P Stockton & wife Rebecca, Robert N Stockden & wife Mary J, I find not one, but TWO Isaah Stocktons. One of these is found in household 658/687 listed as Isaah Stockton aged 16 (b 1834 MS) and living with Franklin Stockton age 20 & his wife Amanda C age 19. Franklin being the brother of Robert & James P, so I'm guessing this makes Isaah a brother also. Was confused when I found in 819/850, in the household of Frederick Weaver 77 & wife Sarah 50 & children, Isaah L Stockton aged 18 (b 1832 MS). Now I've looked at the household of the widowed Sarah Stockton in 1840 and, in addition to her other sons, she has 2 males under the age of 5. What I'm thinking is that Isaah aged 16 (in the house w/Franklin Stockton) and Isaah L aged 18 (in the house of Frederick Weaver) are those 2 sons. Have gone back to the census images & the one living with Franklin is clearly written Isaah. The one w/Franklin Weaver could be Isaah L Stockton or Israh L Stockton depending on how you looked at it. I'm open for opinions here as it seems unlikely that a family would have 2 sons born 2 years apart both named the same. All help appreciated. A nice lady located the house on Google Search. It is in Paris,Lamar Co,Texas. Not Lamar Co,Al.The lady appreciates the help Ann. Thanks,Jean

WATKINS' LIST OF SOLDIERS BURIED IN THE CONFEDERATE CEMETERY IN CHATTANOOGA In 1867 the bodies of 887 soldiers who had died in Chattanooga Jan. 1 to May 31, 1863 (the weeks immediately following the battle of Murfreesboro), were moved from a cemetery close to the Tennessee River, where they had been temporarily interred, to the Confederate Cemetery. A board at the head of each grave was marked with the name of the soldier, his state and his command, and a number. Col. R. L. Watkins copied the names and prepared the following list. It is probable that when the headstones were hastily made-six or seven each day for four month the names were frequently misspelled, in the case of difficult ones at least. This explanation accounts for the many peculiar and infrequent names on the list. Searchers for names should allow for variation in sound and spelling. Many of the wounded in the battle of Murfreesboro were sent to Chattanooga by train. Some of them died en route and others in the station immediately upon arrival. Homes and hospitals were filled with other soldiers who lingered, some a few days and some for months. Col. Watkins began his list with the number 142 and the date Feb. I, 1863. It is presumed that 141 men died in January and were buried in the very low ground where the water washed the graves and the wooden boards, and that the names were not decipherable when he made his list in 1867. The last number "887" is dated May 31, 1863. The list bears this inscription: "Presented to the Confederate Memorial Association March i8, 1876, by R. L. Watkins, who assisted in obtaining this record in 1867 and participated in removing the dead to the graves where they now lie. This was when the Confederate Association was first organized. Each grave was numbered and named on headboard as this list shows and was easily identified. "R. L. Watkins." MISSISSIPPI Alexander, W. M., Company E, 34th Regiment. Allen, W. Hello all, Below are some Monroe Co record holdings held at the MS Dept of Archives & History in Jackson, MS as well as their hours and address. This index information is available on their website, but the actual records are not. It requires a visit to their research room to view the records or microfilm. The first information is a listing of cemeteries in Monroe County. The second index is for newspapers that served the Monroe area. My interest is in the 1840 to 1870 time period so that is the time period this list covers. If you are interested in a different time period, you can go to their website, click on electronic records, click on the records you want to access and fill in the appropriate dates in the search form. just got started at this but my uncle told me that I have relative in Monroe county. can anyone help
I've uploaded some Civilian Conservation Corps records that were gathered by Dr. Charles Granville Hamilton, and were made available to me by The Estate of Mary Elizabeth Casey Hamilton. Unfortunately this is not a complete listing of all individuals but is all that was found. These people came from the surrounding area, not just Monroe County. I've sorted it two ways, first by Name, and then by City where the individual was from. Feel free to link to the data or point it out to your researchers if you notice that anyone signed up from your county! http://www.rootsweb.com/~msmonroe/ccc.htm Thanks! Chris
I recently came across an old genealogy article of about 1960s from the Aberdeen Examiner in Aberdeen, MS Listed are some grandchildren of John W. Whitworth and his wife Mary R. Hutchinson and one of his sons. His son William Andrew Jackson Whitworth m. Oct. 24, 1844 to Sarah Ann Eikner in Monroe Co., MS and moved to Bastrop Co., TX (abt. 30 miles south of Austin) in the year 1772. In the year of 1890 the surviving children of Wm. Andrew Jackson Whitworth (d. abt 1885) and Sarah Eikner Whitworth included: 1) Mrs. Nancy A. Alsup, the wife of W.R. Alsup of Ellis Co., TX 2) Mrs. Sarah (Sally) A. Hays, the wife of D.A. Hays of Ellis Co., TX3) Mrs. Eliza D. Reed, the wife of J.M. Reed of Johnson Co.,AK 4) Mrs. Newell Small wife of Wiley Small of Grayson Co., TX 5) Mrs. Mary E. Alsup, wife of Lycurgus Alsup of Walker Co, AL 6) Jurian D. Whitworth of Bastrop Co, TX 7) Charles J. Whitworth of Bastrop Co., TX This article goes on to say that records indicate that other children of this couple are Amorilla Whitworth, Thomas Whitworth, William Whitworth, Albert Whitworth, Lucinda Whitworth and Jane Whitworth. I BELIEVE THESE CHILDREN ARE THE ORPHANED CHILDREN OF WM. WHITWORTH/ISOBELLA PEARCE --both parents died during the Civil War and they were primarily raised by maternal grandmother Ruth Pearce who worked as a housekeeper for a Sartor family. I am excited to see a possible connection of these children to the larger Whitworth family of that area. I believe them to be the half brothers/sisters of my greatgrandfather Cason Hill who also died very young. Cason Hill and Sarah Jane Guin married 1879 and lived at Smithville, MS. Her parents lived at Greenwood Springs, MS. My grandmother grew up an orphane and was raised by her maternal Guin grandparents. She knew almost nothing about her father's siblings so this has been a real brick wall for me. I have been told that the above child Wm. Whitworth walked to TX when he was abt. 13 and lived there the rest of his life. Thomas Whitworth's son married Hattie Cantrell and they lived in Amory, MS. Amorilla may have married a Bailey. That's as far as I have gotten. I would appreciate any help from anyone researching the Whitworth family or having any information to share. .
