I'm sorry, Wayne; I wish I could help. I looked, though, and I don't have Zora Ritter. Any other Ritters I could perhaps help with? Linda
Can you tell me which Ritter families are in the Monroe County book? Thanks, Linda

Greg, I was born in Gattman, a long time ago... I never heard my grandparents mention this monument. Of course, I didn't always pay attention. Which direction is the Blair Cemetery from Hwy 278? Contact Jack Elliot, MS Dept. of Archives and History, MSU [email protected] Jack has made it a point to research all known extinct towns in MS. He is a native of the Monroe/ Clay County area, so those towns are naturally a little closer to his heart. If Jack doesn't know, I'd say no one know does! I have a copy of the Monroe Co. History Book if you'd like help with a look up. There is a monument to Mississippi Mormon down the road from the Blair cemetery just outside of Gattman. I think the name of the road is Wolfe Road -- not sure. It is more likely that they may have been of Chickasaw heritage. Monroe County was carved from and surrounded by Chickasaw Territory. The Chickasaw were the most "civilized" and Western-oriented of all the Indian tribes. They intermarried frequently with the white people and adopted their ways, including raising cotton and having slaves. They lived in log cabins even before white men moved there. When they decided to move to Oklahoma (in 1837-38 -- later than the Cherokee and Choctaw, who were forced earlier to move -- and by their own free choice due to the bad influences of the whites who were devastating their culture), many of the white spouses moved with them, although many died along the way when government-promised supplies were not provided along the "Trail of Tears".) My Elizabeth Harris was born about 1831. I am descended from her brother Timothy Harris, born about 1834. Their father was James Harris. He moved his family in about 1850 across the border from AL to Monroe County, MS. In the 1850 U.S. Census, James and his family were living in Fayette County (now Lamar Co.). Elizabeth Harris was living with him at that time. In that year he acquired an homestead in Monroe County. In the 1860 U.S. Census of Monroe Co., Elizabeth Harris was not living with him. So she probably married someone between 1850 and 1860. If this is your Elizabeth and you find anything on her, I would appreciate any information with which you can provide me. Jim Hall
