If anyone would like to read the entire interview with John Wise Riley you can do so on my site at http://www.easterfamily.net/Site%20Documents/John%20Riley%20Interview.htm You might also want to look over the other documents on the site including one that names about 1200-1500 deceased Monroe County citizens and the cemetery in which they are buried. Hi All, I don't have much to add - as I have only visited Monroe County twice - but I wanted to mention that John Wise Riley spoke of Mormon Springs twice in the interview about early settlers of Monroe County that he did for Dr. Evans. I don't have a date for the interview, but it was early in the last century - I am guessing it was in the twenties? In the interview he is talking about very early Monroe settlers - 1817 up. Mr. Riley places some families as living in the vicinity of Mormon Springs. " ... The old man, Andrew Crosby, married a Porter. Her mother was a Harmon; her son was Stephen Harmon Crosby. Dillingham lived below Mormon Springs. He had a grey horse named Dan who was an excellent horse. He killed Dillingham's son; he ran over a cow and broke the boy's neck. Neely was a horseman and he had a mare named Moll. His Moll beat Dillingham's Dan. Dan could run 1/2 mile and Moll, 1/4. Neely started a fight because he beat Dan." "... The Marchbanks were rich. They lived by the Sullivans. They owned all the land from the Sullivans to Mormon Springs. The Wests came from South Carolina. One lives near Mormon Springs now. He came from Beeks place, and is still living. He was raised below me." ABOUT THE RITTERS: I am researching brothers Minor, Jonathan and Nathan Edge who came to Monroe about the time Hiram and Thomas Edge arrived. They lived in the Quincy and Smithville area. In the 1860 census, there was a William Ritter, age 19, living in the household of Nathan Edge. There were Ritters in Chatham County, where Minor's wife was from (and possibly Nathan's wife too) and I was curious about who this boy might be. He may have been kin or just helping with the farming as Nathan's brother Jonathan had recently died. Did your Ritter family start from Chatham, Co. NC? I don't have Nathan's wife's last name and wondered if she might be a Ritter. Delila __ Edge was born about 1815 in NC. In this article Morman Springs is mentioned. This book is under copy right, so just for your own information. Mrs. Ross lives near the Morman Springs site. Also at the bottom of the page, I typed a few lines from Mother Monroe By Dr. W. A. Evans that mentions Morman Springs. I thought I had an article here on "Morman Springs" but can not lay my hands on it right now. I hope this helps. This is an interesting subject to me. 3. I have Ritter's from Monroe County who are not in my direct line. My second great Grand Aunt, Sally Annice Kirkpatrick married Stephen David Ritter in Monroe Co., 21 Jan 1894. When we went through my grandmother's things after she died, I found 2 newspapers, one from Amory and one from Aberdeen dated Oct 22, 1952. The papers were obviously saved because of Sallie's obituary. I states that Dave Ritter was a popular public official in Monroe County offices. The only Ritter I knew was Houston whom I met at a Kirkpatrick reunion in probably 1966. He was a very impressive character along with his wife, Helen. I am watching the Ritter discussion with interest. 3. All, The Mormon Springs is on the east side of Wolf road, mabey15 feet of the road. I think I remember seeing this monument on the 278 side of the Blair Cemetery. Someone explained to me that Morman Springs was simply a stopover or resting place on their trek to Utah. There were other such stop overs. People would start gardens and move to the next stop on the way to Utah and hope to reap benifits from gardens planted by previous groups. Some continued the trip out while others settled. 3. Hmmm Mormon Springs is just 11 miles from Hamilton...it appears to be on Wolfe Road... I must admit...growing up just 11 miles down the road...NEVER heard of Mormom Springs... Taking Wolfe Road..never noticed a "mormon springs"... This is odd...to me considering how long I lived there and I'd be interested in any information anyone has..... By the way....I will be going back home after Christmas a few days I might take a drive down that road...although I will only be there about three days over the weekend I tend to not do anything but visit my dad and brother when I'm there....I only see them about once a year But I will..at the very least...ask about this place. 1. [MSMONROE] Sanford, Monroe Co., MS - perhaps a now-extinct Mormon community, 1830-1846 ???
    2. I'll get my Monroe Co. Book out and Mother Monroe as soon as I can and see what I find for you, if you like. I believe Morman Springs is/was just a community. It is possible for it to have a rural post office. Some of the post offices that show up in Carroll Co. will shock you ... just on the side of the road! As for Wolfe Rd., I was reading something on it last night, in Dr. W. Lowndes Lipscomb's History of Columbus, and how it came by the name ... apparently an infestation of wolves in the area in early days ... along with bear and other such "critters". 3. Anne, Take Wolfe Road South from Hwy 278. After a few miles you will see the Blair Cemetery Road branching off the left-it's well marked. Take the Blair Cemetery Road and watch for the cemetery on your left. (You can see a map on my website at http://www.easterfamily.net/Cemetery%20Map%20Page.htm ) I have been in that area many times and I have never seen or heard of the monument spoken of in this thread. If you find it, I'd appreciate it if you'd drop me an e-mail letting me know where to look. This thread also alters an assumption I have always made concerning the name of a creek further South from the Blair Cemetery - "Mormon Spring Branch". I have always assumed that "Mormon" was a family name. Wayne E. 3. Hey All I grew up just down the road from Barttahatchee (between Barttahatchee and Lackey) Wolfe road runs through that area all the way into Caledonia and then into Columbus. I lived in this area until about six years ago and traveled Wolfe Road fairly frequently. I don't recall seeing a monument like this at all anywhere in this area. I also use to work in Gattman for many years and drove up and down 278 into Amory a great deal and don't recall and monument there either. As for a town of Sanford, there isn't one in Monroe County in the last 38 years. Now you know sometimes towns change names...so....I suppose there could have been one way back in the day (1830's as you say)...but don't recall anyone of the elderly people speaking of it either. There is a Smithville, however. If the monument is not very old, as in the last six years, that would explain why I don't remember it. Greg do you live in Monroe county now?
