Wolfe road was his old stomping grounds.... He mentioned Kolola Springs (which I was aware of cause I have a late uncle that lived there) and another Springs...but not Mormon springs and he doesn't know anything..or has never seen a monument there either.... Greg, I haven't visited this site yet, but is it the one that gives a history of the Mormons as they crossed/passed through on their way to Utah? Seems I remember reading about their path of travel out of Monroe Co. and up the MS to cross (maybe) near where St. Louis is now and on into Colorado? I remember the route sounding strange until I considered a person's ability and opportunities to cross the MS in the day. Gracie P.S. It is great to see this list so active right now!!! I've been a member for several years and have never seen this much activity so quickly!!! I love it! It is rivaling my Mayfield list for attention at the moment! ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, December 17, 2006 8:58 PM Subject: [MSMONROE] Mississippi Saints For those interested he is a place to start looking at the Mormons of Monroe County: http://www.utahcrossroads.org/newsv8n2.htm Scroll down page until you see this article: The Forgotten Pioneers, Part I by Norma B. In this case, it wasnt a stopover. Our Mormon ancestors, the Mathews, lived there from 1930-1946 before being called to Nauvoo, then SLC....they, and other families there, became known as the "Mississippi Saints" within the Church... -------------- Original message ---------------------- From: "jimmy d boozer" <[email protected]> > All, > > The Mormon Springs is on the east side of Wolf road, mabey15 feet of the > road. Hi Wayne, It is nice to meet you. I actually visit your site often. Yes, my Edges are in Monroe. I have also been working with your cousin, Ann Gordon, over the last few years. I am glad to be in touch with you as I do have more information. Additionally, I recently made contact with a descendent of Thomas D Edge, Hiram's brother. The good news is that there are living Edge males who MAY participate in the Edge DNA project. I also have some new Baker and Grubbs research, if there are others on the list interested in those families. In short: Elmira Baker married Thomas Edge, Hiram's brother. Her sister was Charlotte Baker Lambeth. I believe Elizabeth Baker Grubbs Easter was also their sister. Elizabeth married Enoch Grubbs in SC and they had two girls, Regina and Nancy. Enoch died in SC and Elizabeth went to Monroe and married Alson Easter. Her daughter, Regina married Louis Easter. I've found land records for the Baker girl's father, Leonard Baker, and for his father, in SC as well as for Enoch Grubbs. (I've ordered Enoch's probate papers as well as Leonard Baker's.) The best news is that these land records reference some of the same people who are referenced in land records for the Edge men in SC inferring that they may be connected to Hiram and Thomas of Monroe - more research needs to be done, but at least we are probably looking in the right place at the right people. For anyone on the list who has SC roots, be sure to visit the on-line index to early records at the SC State Archives. There are many records for men who ended up in Monroe County - Enoch Grubbs, the Sartors, Mabry Posey, just to name a few. The index will give a small abstract of the information in the document you find - the actual document will have to be ordered from the Archives. http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/search/default.asp Wayne - please email me off-line and I can send the details of the above. Robin, You mentioned an EDGE connection. Is that in Monroe County? My Great-grandmother married an EDGE: (Frances Elizabeth "Frank" Easter married James Madison Edge, son of Hiram C. Edge and Sarah Morrow, on 23 December 1874 at Monroe County, Mississippi.) The child from that marriage was Leitha May Edge, my grandmother. That and the little information that I have about Hiram C. Edge (http://www.easterfamily.net/p9.htm#i1014 )is the extent of my EDGE data. I'd appreciate any information you can share Wayne E. That could well be the source of any differences :-) Let me know if you want what I have. I am always keeping my eye out for any Ritter connection. My Minor's wife's mother was a Lawhon from Chatham, NC. In Chatham there are Ritter's who married into the Lawhon family, so it may be that the boy in the Edge household was a cousin. Or related to Delila Edge. If I find anything I will be sure to post it. Gracie, For a copy of the interview on file at the W.A. Evans Library in Aberdeen, see http://www.easterfamily.net/Site%20Documents/John%20Riley%20Interview.htm Wayne E. I was reading it the other day. I'll have to get it out again and we can compare notes. As for Ritter family in the Monroe Co. History Book, 1988, there a number of mentions, but so far I have not found a connection back to Everitt. That's not to say it isn't in there, just that I have not found him yet. Hi All, I don't have much to add - as I have only visited Monroe County twice - but I wanted to mention that John Wise Riley spoke of Mormon Springs twice in the interview about early settlers of Monroe County that he did for Dr. Evans. I don't have a date for the interview, but it was early in the last century - I am guessing it was in the twenties? In the interview he is talking about very early Monroe settlers - 1817 up. Mr. Riley places some families as living in the vicinity of Mormon Springs. " ... The old man, Andrew Crosby, married a Porter. Her mother was a Harmon; her son was Stephen Harmon Crosby. Dillingham lived below Mormon Springs. He had a grey horse named Dan who was an excellent horse. He killed Dillingham's son; he ran over a cow and broke the boy's neck. Neely was a horseman and he had a mare named Moll. His Moll beat Dillingham's Dan. Dan could run 1/2 mile and Moll, 1/4. Neely started a fight because he beat Dan." "... The Marchbanks were rich. They lived by the Sullivans. They owned all the land from the Sullivans to Mormon Springs. The Wests came from South Carolina. One lives near Mormon Springs now. He came from Beeks place, and is still living. He was raised below me." ABOUT THE RITTERS: I am researching brothers Minor, Jonathan and Nathan Edge who came to Monroe about the time Hiram and Thomas Edge arrived. They lived in the Quincy and Smithville area. In the 1860 census, there was a William Ritter, age 19, living in the household of Nathan Edge. There were Ritters in Chatham County, where Minor's wife was from (and possibly Nathan's wife too) and I was curious about who this boy might be. He may have been kin or just helping with the farming as Nathan's brother Jonathan had recently died. Did your Ritter family start from Chatham, Co. NC? I don't have Nathan's wife's last name and wondered if she might be a Ritter. Delila __ Edge was born about 1815 in NC.
