Mary, I have some Funderburks in my line. See my website at the URL below. Select the surname index in the left column. Selecting the Document Index in the left column will take you to a list of site documents. The last entry is a list of deceased Monroe County citizens and the cemetery in which they are buried. There are several Funderburks and at least one Funderburg listed. Wayne E. I'm afraid the others are right; your best bet is an interlibrary loan. There was copy for sale a couple of years ago and I think it went for good sum of money. They very hard to come by. I fortunate my Dad got me one for Christmas the year they printed. It gets lots of use and is looking a little tattered in spots. If you will list you info, name, date, etc. I'll do a look up for you when I can. I still have a couple I have promised do, so those come first. I try do them in the order received. A look up is my best offer, since I doubt you locate a book. If I find something that gets your attention, then maybe a library loan would the way to go to dig a little deeper. I've explained, i think, to the board before, I work, I'm a Mom, and an active cancer patient ... so if it isn't time, or my children's needs, it's how I'm feeling that slows me down some. Bare with me. :o) Gracie Mayfield Morlino ----- Original Message ----- From: Carolyn Davis To: [email protected] ; Carolyn Davis Sent: Thursday, February 08, 2007 2:16 AM Subject: [MSMONROE] Monroe County History Book Hello, I am looking fora book called Monroe County History published in 1988 by Curtis Media Corp. I think I called every orphanage in the south. I found him at the Protestant Orphans Asylum in Natchez. I thought since there were only a couple of pieces of information at the orphanage that just maybe there might be some info in the county they lived in before being sent to the orphanage. Thanks for your help. Linda
Did you try looking at the Palmer Home in Columbus, MS? It is a very old orphanage and they have quite a good set of records. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Wed, 31 Jan 2007 10:40 PM Subject: [MSMONROE] Orphan Court Inventory Could someone tell me where the records are located for the Orphans Court Inventory? I am searching for orphan records for my great grandfather, John Thomas Stafford b. 1879 and his brother Charles Stafford b. 1885. They were placed in an orphanage around 1887. The orphanage does not have any records. So I am hoping this new lead will help me to find the records. I believe they were in the area of Monroe, Lee or Itawamba County around this time. Family stories indicate they were on a wagon train that stopped in or around Fulton or Amory. Their mother and 2 sisters died of malaria and then a few months later their father died from a fall from a wagon. Their uncle had a large family and could not take them in so he took them to an orphanage. Hope someone can help me. Sharon, do you have any first names for your Harrisons? I find an Isham Harrison, (b. 1788,SC - d. 9/30/1863, Monroe Co., MS) on Cripple Creek Plantation in SC, son of James Harrison of Greenville Co., SC and Elizabeth Hampton (1758-1799). Isham married Harriet Kelly in 1810, (b. 1789, SC, - d. 7/1/1856, Aberdeen, MS) dau of Gershon Kelly and a relative of General Moses Kelly. Migrated from SC through AL and owned plantations there, next to Noxubee Co., MS (south of Monroe and Lowndes). Moved to Monroe Co. in 1840's. Isham and Harriet are buried in the Old Historic Cemetery in Aberdeen in the Harrison family plot. They had 13 children, 7 sons and 6 daughters. 5 sons served the CSA. children and spouses listed. If you need more, let me know. Other names mentioned through marriage to 13 children and some grands are: Dr. Baylis W. Earle, Evans (x 2), Whitfield, Fort, Sykes, Ragsdale, Greer, Jack (moved to Texas, m. Laura Harrison), McFarland Bradford, Saunders, Mc Donald (married Thomas Harrison, Brig. Gen. CSA war), Dr. Thomas Barron Dr. Matthew Clay, III (kin to Saunders) Dr. Wells A. Thompson The Harrison family was staunch Baptist and there was a church built on Isham's plantation, Greenwood. In 1988, the church was still in use by a black congregation with a black cemetery.Hope this is the correct family. There is a good migration path to follow back for others with the name. Info submitted by Jerry Anderson Harlow. Jerry is an active member of the Monroe Co. Historical Committee and I can put you in touch with her, if you like. First request first for lookups. Sorry it's taking me so long! For Steven Mitchell First Matthews known to Monroe Co. were: *Thomas Walker, b. 8/24/1820, Williamson Co., TN, died 10/13/1875, Monroe Co., MS. He was killed when a lever from a cotton gin hit him. He was at home, 6 miles east of Okolona, MS. Wife: Mary Elizabeth Hughes, b. 9/26/1827, VA, d. 1/30/1896, Monroe Co., MS. Parents: Madison Redd Hughes (11th of 11 children, b. 3/9/1789, VA - Marshall Co., TN 10/27/1877) and 2nd wife, Mary Matthews. Mary died Eagleville, TN, no dates. Grandparents: Col. Archelaus and Mary Dalton Hughes. Madison and Thomas Jefferson were friends, he served 3 terms in the VA Legislature and a founder of the University of VA. He moved to TN (near Eagleville) with brothers John and William in the fall of 1828. Madison married 3 times 1. Margaret Moore (1 child) 2. Mary Matthews (2 children) 3. Sally Dillard (18 children) [the man stayed busy, I'd say!!!] Parents: John (b. 3/9/1777 - d.?) and Martha Jordan Matthews (no dates) Grandparents: Luke Matthews, b. 3/15/1739, Brunswick Co., VA (d. 4/12/1788, VA), married Lucy Fox 1/16/1777, Lucy b. 11/28/1747 - d. 2/12/1831 in TN. Luke and Lucy had 9 children, John being the 5th. He settled in Triune, Williamson Co., TN, w/ his mother, Lucy. Luke's Great Grandfather was James, b. 1670 and married an Ann ?. James received a land settlement in Prince George co., VA in 1704. 1860 Monroe census: Thomas Walker Matthews (spelled 1 't'), 40 y/o, worked as an overseer Mary Elizabeth, 33 y/o children: John Madison age 15, b. TN Martha "Mattie" age 12, b. TN Susan Emma age 10, b. TN Mary Ellie age 7, b. TN William age 3, b. MS Information submitted by Mary Elizabeth Dollar Wamble. Mrs. Wamble submitted additional information that includes that several descendents are buried at Old Union Cemetery in the Wren Community. John Madison served the CSA w/ 1st MS Partision Rangers under Col. W. C. Falkner. Cited for extraordinary bravery. John took his Father's, Thomas, place in service. Hope this helps! There are photos in the bio, but will not copy well (experience from trying). No other Matthews families recorded in the family section.
