Dear List Members, I am new to Monroe County research and am not familiar with resources available for this county. I have been told, and confirmed through regimental histories, that one of my ancestors, James N. Phillips, a confederate soldier in Co. D, 26th/50th Alabama Infantry Regiment, was wounded and sick at a hospital in Columbus or Enterprise, MS, in June, 1862 and is said to have died at Aberdeen, MS of these wounds and sickness on May 18, 1862 and is buried there in Aberdeen in a marked grave. Is there a cemetery survey published of the older cemeteries in and around Aberdeen to see if his grave and tombstone can be found? I would like to know where he is buried and what, if any, dates and information can be found on his marker. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Robert C. Johnston, Jr. Wetumpka, AL
Thanks for letting me know Mildred
According to the last enumeration of Boggan Cemetery, John N. Ritter had no dates on his stone. Lucinda Isabelle Byrd, born 17 April 1855, daughter of Elvira Carolyn Moore and John Kirk Byrd, married an unknown Smith. Does anyone know who this Smith was? Thanks. Glenda McWhirter Todd
Glenda, I have Jeptha Fletcher Evans (b. Jan 8, 1852 in Millville) married to Alice Byrd on that same date. He was the son of Charles Collier Evans and Margaret McDonald from what I've been able to see. They are on the census two years later: 1880 Lamar County, Alabama Census Page 541A Evans, Jeptha E. Head 28 LA SC AL Evans, Alice Wife 21 AL MS MS Evans, Camilla Dau. 1 AL LA AL [On same page as Martha J. Evans family.] That "LA" thing has to be a mistake - I've got Jeptha son of CC as born in 1852 in Marion Co., AL, so I think this has to be the same one. I can't find him in 1870 though, but his parents are deceased and he should be easy to find. I don't have anything else on this family after 1880 though, but I do have more on his parents. Charles Collier Evans I believe was the oldest child of Noe Avi Evans and Lucinda Loggins, and I have Margaret McDonald (born in Kentucky about 1823) as the daughter of Allen McDonald and Ester Black Young. Jeptha's siblings include Esther Lucinda Evans (md. Felix Franklin Sizemore, moved to OK), Jasper Newton Evans (died in Civil War), Mary Mahala Evans (md. Henry Webb, I dunno what happened to them or who he was the son of but I'm interested if anyone does), Rachel Elizabeth Evans (md. Thomas Bighma, moved to TX), Percy Perkins Evans (md. Mattie Metcalfe, moved to OK), Sarah Jane Evans (md. George W. Hankins, then I lose them), James Monroe Evans (md. Mary Virginia Love in Lee Co., MS, then I lose them), Henry Marshall Evans (moved to MS), and Alabama Evans (eventually moved to Arizona). I've lost all my census entries for Charles Collier Evans though, so if anyone else has any, I'd love to get them back down. I don't know a tremendous amount about this family, but I think Noe Avi Evans was possibly a younger brother to my Evans ancestor (Thomas Evans in the Evans Cemetery in Lamar Co.) and therefore I try to keep up with them.
For Edd: Thanks for the information. Maybe someday I will find out when/where he died and who are his parents.
