    3. Thank you Lori for these super suggestions. Several years ago I checked with the Eudora Welty Library in Jackson and the Archives and History Dept. but no luck there. Judge Roberds' wife was still active in research in 1955 when she contributed some papers to Evans Memorial Library. I should have clarified that date since the Judge had already passed away. Thanks for you help. Jim. 3. It would appear that Judge Roberds died in July 1963 (source: Social Security Death Index): WILLIAM ROBERDS 08 Mar 1884 Jul 1963 (Mississippi) The first place I would check is that Mississippi Department of Archives and History. If it isn't there, see if you can locate an obituary or an entry in a Who's Who type publication that tells which university he attended. Since he was a prominent person, his papers may have been donated to either the MDAH or to a university archives. It's possible the Bible was among the records. If not, you'll probably need to locate his children or grandchildren who may have kept it. By the way, there are several digitized Boyd family Bibles or Bibles which contain Boyds at the Library of Virginia's website if you are looking for older information. 3. Jim, If you have been to EML in Aberdeen, I'm sure you saw all the information in the Monroe County History about the Boyd and Roberds families. My suggestions about finding the Bible would be: (1) Post to the Hines County site (2) Go on line to get phone numbers of Hines County libraries, Genealogical/Historical Society, local newspapers, Chancery office, and anything else you think you might need. (3) Contact the above--talk with a local knowledgeable person to see if the Judge has descendants living in the area and what happened to his genealogical papers, etc. He could have donated them to a local library or to the Society. (3) If all else fails, submit a letter to the editor of every paper in Hines County.......searching for descendants of Judge...., who lived in this area ~1955. You don't have to say why you're searching. 2. Linda Haas Davenport
    3. The Itawamba Co list is posting questions about Itawamba ancestors. My Itawamba question also concerns Monore Co and I thought I'd also ask here. My question - Who was the 1st wife of John Haas? Background: One of the great mysteries in my MS line is who was the mother of my great-grandfather, John Franklin Haas? My gggrandfather, John Haas, was born in TN in 1810 and first appears in MS in Monroe Co in 1839 (aged 29) when he witnessed a will for John Tubb. The Tubb & Haas surnames are found in the same area of TN. Some of the Tubb names in TN disappear about the same time they show up in Monroe -assumption: These men moved together from TN to Monroe Co. Although there were several Tubbs, the only Haas in Monroe is my John. John lived in the area of Tubb's corner (now Hatley) until he purchased land in Itawamba Co in 1849 (area that later became Lee Co). Was John's wife a Tubb female? Not according to the published Tubb Histories and researchers. Since John was 29 when he appears in MS did he marry in TN? Not that I can find and I've read every line of every marriage microfilm I can find for the TN areas where I've found the Haas/Hass name. Did he marry in MS? Once again not that I can find in the Marriage records. The 1840 Monroe census shows a housefull of people, several more than found on the 1850 census. On the 1850 Itawamba census the adult female in John's household was listed as Mary Ann, but according to one of the son's (John O Haas, born 25 Sep 1845) family Bible his mother's name was Lucy and she died 27 Aug 1851. My great grandfather (the last child born) was born 23 Mar 1849 - assumption: Both James and John had the same mother. I've never found Lucy as a nick name for Mary Ann. Did the census taker make a mistake? Were Lucy & Mary Ann really the same person? The 1850 census required that everyone in the household on Jun 1st be counted - even if they were only visiting and not family members. Was Mary Ann a relative? Was Lucy elsewhere? The surnames involved with John Haas' family are: Children of John & Lucy/Mary Ann Martha Ann married John F Thompson and then a man named Johnson James married Mary Looney John Franklin married Cecilia Amanda Gibson. No information on Elizabeth F (b 1839) or William S/L (b 1843) John married Talitha Robinson in 1852 Talitha & John's children: Elen Rachel married J F Baker who worked for the railroad Matilda Caroline married W T Lawrence No information on Mary L (b 1853) or Rebecca M (b 1860) Any information or help will be greatly appreciated. 3. Thanks for those of you that helped me look for info on the Athens area cemeteries. Using the coordinates I got off the topo map of the area I arrived nearby and met a couple walking along the road. They directed me to the landowner. She only knew of one cemetery and the GPS coordinates took me straight to the Lann Cemetery. It is marked by a small marker and is apparently being kept up by someone. Alas no relatives were found in it. Coordinates: N 33 52.548 W 88 26.713 I went to the other set of coordinates and did not find anything I could confirm as a cemetery. There were some depressions that may have been graves, but sometime at least 15 - 20 years ago the area has been bulldozed as there were piles of dirt pushed up around the area. The growth of trees would make it have been done a long time ago. If, and I emphasize IF it is the graveyard, there are no markers. The gentleman I had met walking down the road indicated he had visited a graveyard that should have been this one about 25 years ago and didn't remember any markers. He indicated it would be about 300 feet off the road. My GPS put the spot about 450, but I did look in between. Coordinates: N 33 52.575 W 88 26.506 Richard

    3. Richard, from the land description you gave, and according to the matching description given by Dr. C.G. Hamilton, I think the cemeteries are Lann Burial Ground and Wilson Burial Ground. Dr. W.A. Evans and volunteers enumerated the county's cemeteries in 1938-39. Dr. Evans does not include a Spencer in either burial place. For your question of who owns the land......no one I've talked with today seems to know. As far as finding these burial grounds........A local historian was taken into the Lann Burial Ground ~20 years ago by a member of the Lann family (who has long since died). She states it was remote and well hidden in a tree line. As for the Wilson...she was never able to find it. 3. Richard, A dear friend passed away a couple of years ago. His name was Donald B. Spencer of Memphis, TN. He told me that he had Spencer relatives come thru Monroe Co., MS. But I do know that he did research in Tate & Lafayete counties. His research spanned about 55 years or more. He spent 1 year as a volunteer in the library at Salt Lake. I know he had Mahaffey relatives. If any of this rings a bell and you want to pursue it, answer me off the board. Doug Kendrick [email protected]

    3. Richard, William A. Evans Jr wrote a series of articles for the Aberdeen Examiner [newspaper], A Series of Historical Sketches of Monroe County and another set called Who's Who in Monroe County Cemeteries over the years 1936-1937-1938. W.B.Wilkes did a series of letters that were published in the Aberdeen Weekly in 1877 and 1878 called Pioneer Times in Monroe County. Those three sets of newspaper columns have been combined into one book called MOTHER MONROE. It was republished in 1979 by the Mother Monroe Publishing Company. It has since been reprinted and at last report a few copies remain for sale at the Chamber of Commerce Office in Aberdeen MS. The list of Spence and Spencer surnames are from an everyname index I prepared for the reference book which is wonderful if you are researching early Monroe County folks. Good luck with your search. 3. I do not have info on the wife. There seems to have been three children, but one must have died young. A son Marion Francis and a daughter were placed under the custody of Judge Samuel Gholson. He is believed to be the brother of William Spencer. They came to Mississippi sometime between 1800 and 1820. DNA has proved the two lines run together and we are trying to determine if Charles and William had the same father who should be Samuel Spencer.

    3. Richard, There are two cemeteries indicated on the current MDOT Monroe County map lying between Athens and Tadpole Creek in Section 5. Link to map: http://www.mdot.state.ms.us/maps/County_maps/Monroe.pdf One of those may be called Athens Cemetery but I'm not sure; another in the general area is Lann Cemetery [not to be confused with the Lann Cemetery at Splunge]. As far as I know neither of these have been inventoried online but the 1938/39 work by Dr. W.A.Evans Jr probably has then both. Perhaps someone will do a lookup for you. Elsewhere I find the following SPENCER burials [040 is Camp; 061 is Crenshaw; 208 is Riggan Chapel]: 208, SPENCER, Josie C., 1888, 1971 040, SPENCER, Mary R.J., 1875, 1953 208, SPENCER, Ruben L., 1871, 1922 061, SPENCER, Rubie Lee, 1905, 1906 Most of the online transcriptions have been indexed at Monroe County GenForum beginning at message # 2170 through # 2172, link: http://genforum.genealogy.com/ms/monroe/page5.html#2150 I am also listing below the SPENCE and the SPENCER names indexed in Evans' Mother Monroe on the off chance that you might find them helpful: SPENCE, J.A., minister, 97, SPENCE, J.D., Co H 1st MS Inf CSA, 113, SPENCE, J.F., Co I (Lula White Rebels) 2nd Reg MS Cav CSA, 107, SPENCER, F.S., Co B 24th MS Inf CSA, 108, SPENCER, G.W., Co H 28th Reg MS Cav CSA, 114, SPENCER, J.M., 52, SPENCER, Samuel, 37, 61, 94, SPENCER, W.B., Co B (Hamilton Guards) 20th Reg, MS INF CSA, 82, Good luck finding your Spencers. 3. Just a little added humor on children not knowing who they're kin to... We had a Massengill Reunion last July. I tried very hard to make contact with all descendants from my great grandfather to the present. Some I had never seen. Two groups came from NW AL and were surprised to see each other.....lived in same neighborhood, children in school together, etc. Other than getting to meet so many cousin, I think that was the highlight of the whole day.
