Below is some research I picked up while searching for Hiram C. Edge. The following is a list of military commissions awarded to Monroe County men in the Mississippi Militia during the 1840's. I've done some research on the MS Militia but haven't found much. Apparently MS had an active militia from the time of the War of 1812 until at least the Civil War. It appears the officers served for one year. The call for volunteers to the Militia for the Mexican War did not occur until late 1846 and the 17th Regiment is not one of the three regiments that went to that war from MS. However, that doesn't mean that some of these men did not serve as the men may have been put in other regiments. Robin Note to Lori Thornton: You are welcome to post these names on the Monroe Military pages if you want. These records are held at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in Jackson, MS. Film: rg33mf3, pg 117-118. MDAH. Archive staff will photocopy the pages from the film for you. If you are out-of-state the cost is $15.00 plus 50 cents a page and requests must be in writing by snail mail, paid in advance. In-state requests can be made by email and I understand that the cost is for copies only. None of their films are available for Inter-Library loan. Seeking information on James W. McCullough and/or his ancestors. He married Samantha P. Christian in Itawamba County MS in 1861 and disappeared. Can find no record of his death, divorce, or remarriage. Samantha was about 22 when they married. Thank for any help, Frank P.S. He may have been from Monroe County, can't find him in Itawamba
I suspect that the James McCullough that married Samantha P. Christian in Itawamba Co., MS, was actually James M. McCullock or McCully, son of Ephraim and Eliza McCully. In the 1860 census for Itawamba Co., MS, James McCully age 25, is the only James in the county with a name even close to McCullough. And an "M" was often mistaken for a "W" in the census transcriptions. I see Samantha P. Christian with her parents, Lemuel & Charlotte Christian, in the 1860 Itawambe Co., MS, census as well. James M. McCully (McCullough) died in Sharpsburg, Maryland, in 1862 as a result of the Civil War, I believe. I'm not related at all but find this info in records. Samantha P. (Christian) McCullock married John Stephens in May 1866 in Franklin Co., IL, probably having moved there with her family after the death of her first husband, James McCully, in the Civil War. I also see a Samantha P. McCullack marriage to William H. Martin, March 26, 1869 in Franklin Co., IL. Looks like her 2nd husband, John Stephens, might have died too. I can't tell you if this is completely accurate, but it seems to make sense from the census records. You might try to find him under the McCully spelling. Again, you'll need to validate this info through records. It's only speculation at this point. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, September 21, 2007 6:07 PM Subject: Re: [MSMONROE] James McCullough > Check the MILITARY RECORDS > Edd > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Frank Martin" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Tuesday, September 18, 2007 9:07 PM > Subject: [MSMONROE] James McCullough > > > > > > Seeking information on James W. This is for anyone researching the Lann/Land family in early Monroe. It is from the MS State census for Monroe County in 1841. These entries below were all in a row on the page but since the page is not in alpha order it is possible the families were near each other. On one side was Rosanna McKinney (3,2,5) and on the other side was Wm. Coker (5,5,10) The first page is the only one with column headings M F T - which I assume means males, females, total. John Land, 2-3-5 Henry Land, 2-1-3 Issac Land, Senior, 2-2-4 Issac Land, Junior, 1-1-2 Thomas Land, 1-1-2 James Land, 1-1-2 Joseph Land, 2-3-5 Benjamin Land, 1-3-4 Ancestry has the page images of this state census posted. The database is entitled "Mississippi State and Territorial Census Collection, 1792-1866." The only records for Monroe County are for 1841 - 14 pages in all. Many of the entries are very hard to read so I doubt that the search function for individual names brings up every name on the census. By reading each page you may recognize one of your names which the indexer could not read.

Thank you! It was a lot of work. I sent it to Lori Thornton and she posted it on the Monroe County site so it may be easier to read there. Good Morning: Below is the URL for the Hill County blog of Terry Thornton of Monroe County, MS. He has very kindly posted an excerpt from my notes on Hiram C. Edge about his Civil War service. Please take a look if you have time. As DNA has shown that although my group of Monroe County Edges (Minor, Nathan and Jonathan) shared an ancestor with the Hiram and Thomas Edge group - it was too far in the past to be of any genealogical help. So, I am wrapping up my research on Hiram and Thomas' line - well, okay, I'll never be able to quit completely. I am sending all my notes and copies of documents, deeds, plat maps, and photographs concerning the Hiram C. Edge, Thomas D. Edge and Elmira Baker Edge families to the Evan's Memorial Library in Aberdeen MS. They will be available to researchers on-site as well as by mail as I am sending a CD with the documents and images. The library should be able to print out documents and possibly attach photo files to emails. Further below is the contents page. You are welcome to use my photographs and notes with citation. There are some items in the binder and on the CD that are under copyright to other people so they only for personal use. It will be mailed today - so give them about a week. Jim, Jimmy probably needs to go into his spam filter and have it "whitelist" or "allow" messages from your email address. Jim, I'm sure it would be fine for you all to attend the meeting. I've gone to a couple of Itawamba Historical Society meetings recently without being a member --- and most societies have open meetings. And they are all looking for new members! Here are the directions I was given to find my way to the meeting room (I've never been to this society's meetings either): Meeting is at Vernon on Monday, Sept 10th, at 6 P.M. in the conference room of the Lamar County Extension Service (Old Health Dept Building) on Columbus Ave about two blocks west of the courthouse. My talk at the Lamar County Genealogy and Historical Society is on some of the old-time burial customs in the Hill Country. I hope to see you there. Please identify yourself --- I'll try to print you off a copy of Dr. Boozer's bill. Terry, Any chance my brother and I could attend the meeting Monday evening or is it invatation only? We have never set in on a meeting of this sort. "Terry" Thornton Sent: Friday, September 07, 2007 8:15 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [MSMONROE] (no subject) Jim, Dr. E.D. Boozer of Splunge attended my greatgrandmother, Nancy Jane Lay Thornton, in her final illness in 1918 in Weaver's Creek Bottom [between Parham and Splunge]. He made several house calls ($2 per visit) and sent medicine several times ($1 each). His bill/receipt signed by him was in her pension file --- I'm using that receipt Monday night at a talk in Vernon that I'm doing for the historical society. One day next week I hope to publish that bill/receipt from Dr. Boozer on the blog, Hill Country of Monroe County, Mississippi. Thanks for the information about the medical group of Boozers. Terry, I just discovered the Hill Country blog through this series of messages. Only a 'young' mind could write so well with the feeling and insight that you do about an area that I love.
