(Also Martin, Bethune, Meigs & Finley of NC, TN & AL) I am seeking info. on the DORTCH family who came to Feliciana in the 1790's from SC. I believe they may connect with my Robert Dortch who settled in Ouachita Parish in West Monroe, La. near Bayou De Siard. Robert Dortch was a member of the Western Star Masonic Lodge 24 in the 1860's. He died near Oxford, Mississippi, on December 4,1869, at age 40. He was born about 1829. He married Mary Bethune Martin, the daughter of John Bethune Martin and Nancy Hill Harris of Montgomery County, NC. Robert Dortch and Mary Bethune Martin were married before 1861 in Holly Springs, Marshall County, Mississippi as per LDS Patron Sheets. While in Raleigh at the State Archives, I found a book by Daniel Allan McDonald that said that John Bethune Martin was living with his second daughter, Mary Bethune Martin, in Monroe, LA, when he died. She had married a wealthy planter named Robert Dortch, who also came from NC. Her sister was Margaret Harris Martin who was the 3rd wife of Jesse Johnson Finley (Gen). He was born in 1812 near Lebanon, Wilson County, Tenn., practiced law for a while in Arkansas, moved back to TN and was the Mayor of Memphis, settled in Florida where he was a U.S. Representative. He died died in Lake City, Florida, November 6, 1904. According to James T. Harris, the children of Robert Dortch and Mary Bethune Dortch were: Dortch, Alexander Martin Birth : 25 May 1852 Death : 21 Jul 1873 Gender: Male Dortch, William Eaton Birth : 24 Jan 1854 Death : 11 Jul 1901 Gender: Male Dortch, John Bethune Birth : 25 Aug 1862 Gender: Male Dortch, Robert Birth : 8 Dec 1864 Death : 1866 Gender: Male As per The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution Volume 97, page 47; Mrs. Mildred Bethune Dortch Harris. DAR ID Number: 96149 Wife of Theron D. Harris. Descendant of Claudius Pegues, and of Capt. Claudius Pegues, Jr., as follows: 1. John B. Dortch m. Mary Pegues. (I believe this may be John Bethune Dortch) Mary Bethune Martin who married James Lamme Meigs 23 Dec 1879 in Columbia County, Florida, after the death of Robert Dortch. James L. Meigs was born 25 Feb 1821 or 1827 in Athens, TN. His first wife was Katherine or Catherine Kirkpatrick. I wonder if she married in between these two husbands since Robert Dortch died 10 years before her marriage to James Meigs. I believe she must have moved to Florida to be near her sister, Margaret Harris Martin Finley. According to Hillsborough County, FL 1880 census records for District 61, Precinct 3, pg 12: Meigs, James L. w/m 53 TN TN TN engineer; Mary w/f 47 TN VA TN wife; Dortch, William D. w/m 27 TN VA TN stepson; Meigs, Alexander K. w/m 23 TN TN TN son; (Alexander Kilpatrick Meigs) Meigs, Mildred w/f 15 TN TN TN daughter. (It lists William as not being at home and Alexander as a Machinist.) Note: Two other Meigs sons, Return Jonathan Meigs and James Lamme Meigs were deceased by the 1881 census) I'm not so sure about some of the information on this census. I believe Mary Bethune Martin Dorch Meigs was born in NC. As were her parents, who weren't married until September 06, 1825, so I believe her age is off. John Bethune Martin was married before Nancy Harris and had as son named Atlas Jones Martin, but Mary Bethune Martin was always thought to be the daughter of Nancy. I also believe William Dortch was born in LA or, possibly MS, but not TN. I also believe that William's father, Robert Dortch was born in LA or NC. My Great-Grandfather, Victor Boardman Atkins, who was born in 1856 in Greensboro (Hale or Greene County), Alabama, had Atkins Wholesale Grocery in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama. Victor Atkins wife (my Great-Grandmother) was also named Mary Bethune Martin. She was the niece of Mary Bethune Martin who married Robert Dortch. Victor Atkins partner at Atkins Wholesale Grocery was a Mr. Dortch who was kin to Robert Dortch. It may have been known as Atkins/Dortch Wholesale Grocery at one time. I can't help but wonder if my Dortch family of Ouachita, LA ties in with the families of William Dortch who died 1801 in Feliciana and Nathan Dortch who died in 1809. As per an internet posting, Nathan Dortch came to Spanish Feliciana in the 1790's along with brothers William and John Dortch, all from South Carolina. (Note: I have found a Nathan Dortch family from VA and NC) Nathan DORTCH, b, 1760, d. 1809 in Feliciana, m. Elizabeth Carroll, and had children: Ann Bass DORTCH, Rachel CARTER DORTCH DAY, William E. DORTCH, Elizabeth C. DORTCH FOSTER, Nathaniel C. DORTCH. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Fredreica Speyer [email protected] PS.
