    3. From the book _Holly Springs Mississippi to the year 1878_, by William Baskerville Hamilton, published by The Marshall County [Mississippi] Historical Society, copyright 1984. page 148 Wm J. Bowen is shown as a Private in the Quitman Rifle Guards, Co. F, Ninth Mississippi Volunteers. There is also a Private John W. Bowen in the same company. page 144 There is an H. J. Bowen mentioned in this paragraph: "Holly Springs literally poured men into the Army of Confederacy. Company after company of Marshall County men enrolled in Holly Springs and marched off to America's bloodiest war. Nothing approaching a complete check on the men she sent to battle and those men who did not come back has been made. Judge Clayton mentions a few, however. In the higher rank [8 names, then]...H. J. Bowen, died on the field of battle." This site will take you to more about H. J. Bowen. (In case you don't want to read the entire site and if you are using Internet Explorer, don't forget you can go to VIEW and use the "Find" feature. I suggest you search on the surname Bowen since there is another mention of the name besides those using H. J.'s initials.) ----------------------------- OTHER STUFF There are some "older" Bowen men who might be of interest as prospective fathers: From book _Marshall County Mississippi Cemeteries_, 1983 edition: Chulahoma Cemetery Bowen, Dr. Christopher Strong, born 1 May 1806, died 17 March 1891 - born in Charlotte, Dickson Co., Tenn. Bowen, Dr. B., 1 May 1808 - 1 Nov, 1858 Harmony Cemetery Bowen, Timothy, Nov. 1814 - 25 Jan 1889, born in County Cork, Ireland Bowen, Martha, wife of Timothy, died 3 Sep 1901, age 80 years Bowen, John, 1 Mar 1859 - 20 May 1931 Bowen, Dollie Cox, wife of John, 15 May 1872 - 11 Nov 1948 There might be a possible obituary (I don't have access to the newspapers) since they lived long lives and were buried in Marshall County (I'm referring to Dr. Christopher, Dr. B., or Timothy). There are also some Bowen wills in Marshall County, but none appear to be for these three men, but anyone could be mentioned in the probate papers. Hope some of this helps.
