I noticed today that William Tabour, on the 1841 Marshall County State Census, is only seperated from my folks, the Lesueur's, by 11 families. The Lesueur's lived on the land still owned by my cousins and my brothers and I, and near where my mother lived when you visited her. Some of those families listed between the two, actually lived farther east in what is Benton County now, but if the Tabors were there in 1841, and the second of the girls died in 1855, it looks like they stayed about the same place for 14 years. I looked at the names on page 44 of the Southern District of the 1840 census while I was at the library today, also. Some of those names, not the names you said were omitted, but the others, the Alstons, Gillises, Wyches, etc. lived way down around Old Wyatt, on the Tallahatchie River, on the Marshall/Lafayette County line. 3. This Outgoing message has been scanned by Norton's Anti Virus 2003 and is virus free. Thanks Ron...........apparently my family really wanted to be farmers but had to work the mines in Paulding Co. GA to eat so guess that is what drew them...........but they sure didn't have the money to own slaves or else didn't believe in it, so had to do all the work themselves. Sure wish I'd inherited their 'green thumb' so guess they'd disown this descendant of theirs. ----- Original Message ----- From: <MSMARSHA-D-request@rootsweb.com> To: <MSMARSHA-D@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, March 10, 2005 12:00 PM Subject: MSMARSHA-D Digest V05 #44

Central Standard Time, MSMARSHA-D-request@rootsweb.com writes: I'd like to know..............if possible............. what drew people to the area before 1857 Farming land!! Pure and simple. The land had been stolen/purchased from the natives and a lot of it bought by land speculators. To those families back east, read E. and Middle Tenn, GA, SC, etc., the land was plentiful and rich. This becomes obvious when you look at the number of slave holding that existed in this county in 1850- 1860! Ron

    3. Is there anyone in Marshall Co. MS that could do some On-Site Research for me (for a fee of course)...........Years between 1840-1857-60............I don't know what records are available, but things like tax list............whatever is available during those early years that might help to give me understanding about my ancesters there and perhaps WHY the chose the area..............possibly because other SMITH families where in the area. I have proof that my G Grandfather Andrew Jackson Adair married Frances Gantt in Marshall Co. MS on 01 Oct 1857. Married by James J. Power in home of her brother Wm. Henry. Gantt in Marshall Co. MS. I'd like to know..............if possible............. what drew people to the area before 1857...........see if I can find some record when A.J. and his brother John Smith Adair arrived . Also would like to find where (if possible) their mother Ann Smith Adair died 16 Oct 1852..........possibly in Marshall Co. MS. All these dates came from our Adair Family Bible. I don't know if this would need to come from MS State Archives or from Marshall Co. MS records itself. I'd appreciate any guidance anyone could give me. Nell

    3. There are no Dentons in the Marshall County MS cemetery book. In the Betty Couch Wiltshire book, _Mississippi Index of Wills, 1800-1900_, there is a will listed for Marshall County for a Benjamin Denton in 1846 (will book & page: P.4-489). I don't have access to the Marshall County wills here in Iowa, so maybe someone else can help you with that. The only other Denton in this book is W. A. Denton, Holmes County in 1898 (will book & page: 3-66). In Wiltshire's book, Marriages and Deaths from Mississippi Newspapers, Volume 1: 1837-1863, I found the following with Marshall County connections: Holly Springs Gazette (Holly Springs, Mississippi) Thos. A. Falconer, Publisher August 23, 1845 Married on the 30th July by Horatio Tyson, Esq., Miss Angeline Baker to Mr. Ozious Denton, all of this county. Could this be a brother of your Rebecca? Also, I've found the spelling Ozias for this first name, in case you decide to search this line for his parents. Ancestry.com has the following for Benjamin Denton: Name: BENJAMIN DENTON State: MS County: Marshall County Township: No Township Listed Year: 1841 Database: MS 1841 State Census Index Name: BENJAMIN F. DENTON State: MS County: Tippah County Township: No Township Listed Year: 1841 Page: 005 Database: MS 1841 State Census Index I found both Ozias and Benjamin Dentons in Marshall County at www.familysearch.org, the LDS library site. Also, using Google and the query, Rebecca Denton Mississippi, I found the site below which also included a Benjamin Denton as well as a female Rebecca Denton who was too old to be your Rebecca Denton, but may be a sister of the Benjamin Denton. I didn't study it, but the fellow who did this website might be worth contacting. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rayherndon/p908.htm#i13321 Hope some of this helps. Good luck. I have very limited information about her grandfather. I posted this a few years back on ancestry.com If by chance you have information on Laster's in Florida, please let me know. My mother believes it's possible that her grandfather could have migrated from the VA/GA area. Here's what I have: I am trying to build the family tree of Bethel Laster(DOB unknown ?1880's). The informing that I know concerning my Great Grandfather is that he raised his family in Jefferson County (Ashville), Florida. He was married to Cora LeNora Hall and had 5 children, whose names were Julius (my grandfather 11/1901), Alpha, Cora Lee, Marinna, and Theodosia (? sp). My grandfather had a country store and also did shoe repairs. The only other information that I have is he had at least 3 other sibblings: Emma, Millie and Van. Please let me know if you may have any information that could help us trace our heritage. My email address: POJackson@comcast.net
