Pictures taken inside the house at any time--as late as the 20th century--and written descriptions of the house's rooms are needed, to help with the owners' ongoing restoration of this important Holly Springs landmark. Please reply to Jean Dunbar, the project's researcher.

J Bowen age 10 is listed in the 1850 Marshall Co, Ms census, Southern Division, pg 212, family # 52. He is listed in the household of what must be his parents, Randal A. Bowen, age 37, born in Tn a tailor, and wife Sarah A. Bowen, age 30 born in NC. Also in the household are siblings, Mary A., John W., Frances L., and Caledonia. Randal and his family are also listed in the 1860, 70, and 80 Marshall Co censi. He apparently became a farmer and did fairly well. I believe this is the same Wm J as in the Miller household, and as married Lydia Elizabeth Harris daughter of Charles B Harris, pioneer Methodist Episcopalian Circuit riding preacher in Marshall County. Wm J. became a Private in Co of the 34th Ms Infantry and was killed I believe at Perryville, will have to check my notes to be sure where he died. In the 1870 census Lydia is back living with her father.

    2. Bill Allen and I share ggg grandparents, Richard Winborn and Rebecca Floyd. Sheriff Joe Winborn was a brother to my gg grandfather, Pugh Houston Winborn. Thanks for the messages, Bobby and Bill. Pugh Winborn, in family lore, was killed in Obediah Langston's woodlot, and I assume he was buried there. I haven't been able to locate him in any cemetery, or heard anything about him from the day of the skirmish in which he was shot fatally. If anyone knows anything about him or his widow, Mary Jane Langston Meadows Winborn, I would love to hear from you. Loretta LaBuz

    2. I checked the index for the surnames Winborn and Langston in A Southern Tapestry, Marshall County, Mississippi - 1839-2000 by Hubert McAlexander and did not find the names you mentioned. I also checked Bobby Mitchell's cemetery listing for Spring Hill cemetery and they were not there either. There is a Winborn community in Benton County, about 2 miles SE of Potts Camp, Mississippi. Benton was formed from part of Marshall and Tippah County in 1870.

    3. From the book _Holly Springs Mississippi to the year 1878_, by William Baskerville Hamilton, published by The Marshall County [Mississippi] Historical Society, copyright 1984. page 148 Wm J. Bowen is shown as a Private in the Quitman Rifle Guards, Co. F, Ninth Mississippi Volunteers. There is also a Private John W. Bowen in the same company. page 144 There is an H. J. Bowen mentioned in this paragraph: "Holly Springs literally poured men into the Army of Confederacy. Company after company of Marshall County men enrolled in Holly Springs and marched off to America's bloodiest war. Nothing approaching a complete check on the men she sent to battle and those men who did not come back has been made. Judge Clayton mentions a few, however. In the higher rank [8 names, then]...H. J. Bowen, died on the field of battle." This site will take you to more about H. J. Bowen. (In case you don't want to read the entire site and if you are using Internet Explorer, don't forget you can go to VIEW and use the "Find" feature. I suggest you search on the surname Bowen since there is another mention of the name besides those using H. J.'s initials.) ----------------------------- OTHER STUFF There are some "older" Bowen men who might be of interest as prospective fathers: From book _Marshall County Mississippi Cemeteries_, 1983 edition: Chulahoma Cemetery Bowen, Dr. Christopher Strong, born 1 May 1806, died 17 March 1891 - born in Charlotte, Dickson Co., Tenn. Bowen, Dr. B., 1 May 1808 - 1 Nov, 1858 Harmony Cemetery Bowen, Timothy, Nov. 1814 - 25 Jan 1889, born in County Cork, Ireland Bowen, Martha, wife of Timothy, died 3 Sep 1901, age 80 years Bowen, John, 1 Mar 1859 - 20 May 1931 Bowen, Dollie Cox, wife of John, 15 May 1872 - 11 Nov 1948 There might be a possible obituary (I don't have access to the newspapers) since they lived long lives and were buried in Marshall County (I'm referring to Dr. Christopher, Dr. B., or Timothy). There are also some Bowen wills in Marshall County, but none appear to be for these three men, but anyone could be mentioned in the probate papers. Hope some of this helps. There is an article about an abandon cemetery called Mt. Zion cemetery. In this article it list the inscriptions from the monuments. It lists Eli Jones - December 17, 1788 - October 15, 1872. Wife of Dica M. Jones, September 5, 1791 - November 5, 1855. "Old land records show that the Mt. Zion Church was established March 6, 1846, on a plot of ground of two acres deeded to 'The Trestees of the Mt. Zion Methodist Church', by Eli Jones. What I have on this family mainly comes in the way of decendents of Amariah (Jones) Freeman (daughter of Eli and Dica M. (Holt) Jones). I would be interested in sharing Info if you are interested.
